A great Cataclysm occurred that scarred the planet itself.
The presence of the Wanderer threatened the stability of the Empire and the Emperor personally confronted her in order to save the Empire. The battle caused such damage that an entire continent was scarred and both the Wanderer and Emperor suffered incredible injuries. Both retreated from active participation in the world as a result and in their absence instability would follow due to the damage done.
