The Scillari

Merfolk of the shifting fate

This article is a stub. Please comment if you would like it to become a priority for expansion.
The Scillari are a group of merfolk who inhabit the southern part of Whispering Sea, the stretch of ocean between the continents of Caia and Oyekos. Unlike many merfolk in the Caerlean Ocean, they have evolved long and elaborate tail fins, likely because the area where they live is unusually calm. They generally do not venture into the northern half of the Whispering Sea and beyond, where the currents are stronger.   The Scillari see themselves as the keepers of fate, and have a long history of divination practices and rites. This, they believe, is passed down from their god, Iryex, who it is said has the power to predict the end of the world. They have a sacred cave, known as the Seer's Grotto, where Iryex is meant to retreat in times of apocalypse; as long as the cave remains empty, any current horrors will pass. As a people, they feature heavily in the myths of the Hutsai, and are said to be able to change one's fortunes for a suitable gift. This is not true, but the Scillari do nothing to discourage the rumours.

I wonder if they’ll regret not discouraging those rumors; I could see someone hatching a kidnapping scheme to try and get a wish

That sounds like a lot of interesting things to expand on in this article. I hope to learn more about their rituals and practices and it would be nice to see them swimming in the sea with their long tails. I'm thinking of the tail fins of betta fish.

Thank you! <3 I've kept bettas over the years and they are so beautiful, definitely taking inspiration from them.

I love the notion that their tail fins have developed because of the waters they live in, and I just generally love the idea that not all merfolk would present exactly the same tail-wise. Story ideas percolating off of that. Also love that last line!

Thank you! :) I need to rework my merfolk article at some point to talk about the differences.

I hope we get to learn more about their rituals. The idea of being able to change your fortune sounds like some poor Scillari is going to fishcaked at some point. (I tried to write fishnapped, but I prefer autocorrect's suggestion.)
