The Kawhai

Citizens of Teht Krekahw

The Kawhai, who occasionally refer to themselves as the Truefolk, are shapeshifters native to and residing in the city of Teht Krekahw. Teht Krekahw is located in the Great Northern Spine, the mountain range that sprawls across the continent of Aenica. The Kawhai consists of predominately avian shapeshifters, as the city is built to be virtually inaccessible for those without wings. A small population of non-avian shifters, accounting for about five percent of the city, exists, descendents from the time when the city was being built and the tunnels leading to the foot of the mountains were still open for traversal.   There is a pervasive sentiment amongst the Kawhai that they are superior to others, hence the name 'Truefolk'. This is slowly falling out of favour amongst the younger generations, who are becoming more in favour of reopening the old tunnels to allow for more trade and exposure to the outside world.   They speak an old dialect of Ibrish, which would be mostly unintelligable to the modern day citizens of Ibatrene.

How are the non-flyers surviving with the tunnels closed? Are they essentially at the mercy of the Kawhai's charity?

Basically, yeah, though they can make themselves useful in other ways so it's not like they are entirely dependent. I think at least some would have left before the tunnels closed.
