The Emehr
In the shadow of the volcano

The Emehr are the inhabitants of Emera, a medium-sized island in the archipelago of the Jasperic Isles. Emera consists mainly of dense rainforest and black sand beaches. In the centre of the island lies a dormant volcano.
Emehr settlements are generally located under the cover of the trees so that they are not visible from the sea. While invasion is unlikely due to the sharp reef of volcanic rock that surrounds most of the island, the Emehr believe the lack of visible civilisation will discourage outsiders. Seasonal high tides allow brief windows of trade outside of the island.
When adolescent boys come of age, they are sent out into the rainforest to locate wild copper bee hives and collect honeycomb. The copper bee, endemic to the island, has a particularly painful sting.
Is there an incident in their history where outsiders attacked that led to their current anxieties about invasion?
I wouldn't be surprised if there is. I'll have to think about it. :) Thanks!
