"We're getting close to the station." The driver hollered back to his passengers, even with his loud voice, it barely reached the ears of Caffann and Kitersha. At their high velocity, the wind roared over them like an endless rolling wave. At least it kept them cool for the ride. An hour aboard their rented ride had taken a toll on their lower backs. The ride itself, an all-terrain buggy made by the driver for the local cross-city races. Since it was offseason, ferrying people across the plains served as good income, always important in the Federation.

Caffann and Kitersha, long time friends and fellow migrants from the Haimarchy, had never taken this trip before. While they had lived in Kkrinth for a year, this was their first trip to the Karstway Basin. The eatery that Caffann had found herself in, requested an expedition to harvest some of the mycological superbloom that could really spice of the menu for the upcoming tourist season.

The trip was dangerous enough to allow Caffann to bring along one friend, and Kitersha was the natural choice. Kitersha did not work for the eatery, but instead utilized their knowledge to work the Meta tech that helped hold Kkrinth together.

The Kytherian moons kept them company during the ride, shifting the colors of the landscape constantly in their passing. The sun, Apollo, had been just a little towards the morning end of it's highest point over K'krinth when they left, and now sat comfortably in the sky. The moon Algia, with a nearly 24-hour phase, was the celestial body by which the planet set its clocks--it hung directly overhead them, reflecting a topaz glow over the landscape as Thalia rose from the eastern horizon, jasper tone red-shifted into a brilliant, bloody crescent. Ruby Euphrosyne was nowhere to be seen -- she lurked somewhere in the shadow of Kytheria, hiding from sibling Apollo.

"Hope you guys brought lots of pills, the Mushroom's sporing real bad this year!"

Their vehicle cut through the long grass and the thumped over the occasional rock. In front of them rising over the distant morning haze was the Lotos Karstway Basin. Both Caffann and Kitersha recognized the Mushroom-shaped protusions towering over the jagged hills. That was their destination.

"That's such an impressive sight! But I'd love to get out of this buggy, my butt is killing me." Kitersha groaned and moved as much as she could inside this buggy. She's been pouting about it for the past 10 minutes, only allowing Caffann to hear it though.

"Sir! If happen to need to buy some pills in Lotos, where should we head to?" Kitersha screamed to make sure the driver hears her question.

Sat, Oct 28th 2023 03:01

The wind tugged at their horns and Caffann had to keep turning into it to alleviate the worst of the gusts. Still, a smile was plastered across their face.   New mushrooms! New spices! Tasty treats! ran like on repeat through their head, the excitement undimmed by the work ahead.   "Hell of a thing," Caffann said with a grin. "Moon's a scythe and bloody as Vanthra even with the sun heated to blazing." They shifted to stretch their aching back and then playfully bumped their shoulder against Kitersha's. Over the wind, they loudly said into her ear, "I know it's a ride out, but I'm glad you came with. There's plenty to haul so we should make short work of the order, just like old times."   Caffann hadn't had a good run at a harvest in a while, and this would be just like an Anchaemo field, nothing to dim their optimism nor to slow their harvesting pace.   If one ignored the "dangerous enough you need backup" proclaimation when they'd taken the gig in the first place.   Which Caffann did.   "He means sporing great," Caffann said. They rubbed their hands together. "Superfresh picks!" Okay, so the air would be a bit foggy with allergins but probably they could manage with their equipment and rebreather...Caffan shook their head, worries over the driver's words cast aside in favor of the more promising vision for the imagined afternoon: the gills would be open and mushrooms perfectly ready for eating, or drying and crushing up for spice, spice, spice!   "We're almost there~ We're almost there~" they half-sang under their breath as the buggy bounced onward.
Sat, Oct 28th 2023 03:31

Their ride tore over the plains, cutting through the tall grasses towards the towering clouds of spores and fog lit by the cresting of the sun and moons. The border hills rose taller as the miles dwindled.

"Buy?" Their driver cackled over the roar of the engines. "Not unless you plan on trading with pirates! Not exactly a lot of friendly faces in the Basin lately!"

"Hol' up. I got something." He reached down to his driver door, and pulled up a small inhaler. The action pulled his eyes off the road long enough to hit a nasty crevice in the dirt. The shock of the impact jolted through the buggy, even if the buggy plowed through it without injury, the same could not be said for it's passengers.

[Vit Check Challenge, Toughness of 4]

Apologies and curses of equal measures poured from the Driver. At least he maintained the vehicle, though it felt like controlling this buggy was more akin to making suggestions than actually driving. "Always keep a couple doses handy!" He explained, and offered it back to Kitersha.

"I've seen a couple of Mycologists go in there recently. Had to drive a Ral-mi and Gearheart not too long ago. Ankh was his name, nice guys even if they kept getting handsy in the back." The small talk continued if unopposed, until they began to approach the bottom of the hills. They spotted several other vehicles parked nearby, in varying conditions from old wrecks to new meissner vessels.

Sat, Oct 28th 2023 05:48

At the mention of pirates Caffann's nose scrunched up. They were just reminding themself that optimism was the word of the day before they had that expression practically bounced off their face by the wrenching jolt of the buggy.   "Shiiit, that smarts!" Caffann groaned, rubbing their butt and sending a sympathetic look at their best friend. Good that extra pills were on hand for Kitersha for the spores at least, though the buggy ride...not so much.   "I bet they get quite a bit of data with a bloom like this. How long do the sciency folks usually stay out for?" they asked by way of helping along a distraction from the sting and so they could regain their focus.   Almost there. We've got this.
Sat, Oct 28th 2023 06:18

"It is indeed smart to have some spare inhalers, what would it cost?" Kit asked the driver before hitting her head with the buggy's ceiling and cursing under her breath, holding her head and staying as low as she could.

After finishing cursing under her breath, she realized that the driver mentioned pirates and some weird scientists? They better not bother them, bad enough was the travel there (and more than possible the travel back).

Kitersha slammed up against the ceiling and even with her going with the hit, it still left a nice bump just behind her ears. "Oh gotcha with that one? Nothing compared to the races I tell you." His musing petered out, and the importance of repeat business settled in. "Inhalers yours. Just uh, don't leave a poor review, huh? Roads out here aren't exactly maintained as you can see."

They pulled up to the hills bordering the Basin, and as the Driver said, not a road in sight even with vehicles strewn about. Most looked pretty old, but a couple looked like they must have been brand new. Recent vistors.

"Yeah, Kytheria's really got something special with the forests out here sciency folks are in and out all year round. Wildlife and flora, rare and fantastic!" He quoted a tourism poster that both Kitersha and Caffann had seen in the city of Kkrinth. The engine puttered out on their approach to the narrow pathways that led deeper into the hills and the Basin beyond.

The driver locked his parking brakes, and looked back to the Sauthei and Hiserabi. "So, you've got my number. Signal gets kinda crap back there, so give me a shout when you are heading back so I can meet you."

The passenger doors unlocked with metallic *clunks* and they were free to step onto the dirt and grass below.

Wed, Nov 1st 2023 04:43

Kitersha almost jumped out the car, eager to not be sitting anymore nor to be travelling on a shit road. She stretched her arms and then dropped to her fours and stretched her legs like cats do while a long yawn covered her face.

"Thanks for the drive. I think by tomorrow we should be done, when could you come get to us tomorrow?" she said to the driver while taking a look at her surroundings. She wrinkled her nose when seeing so many cars, it might not be a peaceful trip after all if there are so many cars.

Fri, Nov 3rd 2023 10:54

An afternoon, a night, a morning...maybe another afternoon. Caffann stared at the scattered vehicles, narrowing their eyes at the ones that looked capable of movement. There really weren't all THAT many, but even one meant the best mushrooms might well be gone.   "Not just sciencey folk, but all the pickers too." Still, that did mean that all of the vehicles might not belong to mushroom collectors like them and Kitersha. "Thanks for the information and the ride out, man, and don't worry, you get us out when we call and we don't fall out on the way back, your review'll be golden for sure."   They stifled a sigh though, hopping out of the buggy with their gear and heading for the paths into the Basin. Brushing against one of the operable-looking vehicles, they surreptitiously checked for any warmth that came from inside the metal, rather than the ambient heat. Truthfully, it didn't matter how early these others had arrived. If these were mushroom-taking folk...Caffann stared at the nearest path, considering the stirred up ground far more closely.   If folk knew what they were doing, the best ones would be gone.   If they didn't, or if they weren't here for mushrooms and weren't steering clear of the precious yums, the others might've damaged the best ones.   So either way, Caffann wanted the path less traveled, the one with as few fresh tracks as possible. They grinned suddenly. "Hey Kit!" they called over their shoulder. "Let's get some mushrooms!"
Fri, Nov 3rd 2023 11:15

Their driver shrugged to the Hiserabi, flashing his chipped fang behind a confident smile, "I'll head out as soon as I hear word from you."   "Don't be dying out there!" He hollered out over the revamping roar of his engines. Tires crunched against the dirt, and the hum of a Meissner engine lifted the suspension. Soon after, he was but a dot in the distance.   The radiant heat off the vehicles were uniform throughout, having baked in the sun and moons for hours. But, something else caught their attentive ear. Caffann dragged against the remains of a food truck turned caravan. The sturdy metal shone beneath the wind and sand blasted paint. Her presence caused a loud clatter in the back of the van.   Metallic, hollow, something else.
Sat, Nov 4th 2023 04:21

"You are too interested in that sound." Kit sighed, "Come on, open the door, surely it has heard us or the buggy." She knows how Caffann is usually guided by their curiosity and how impulsive is, so she doesn't even try to change Caffann's idea.

She started walking behind Caffann, to position herself in a place where she'll see whatever might be inside the truck. Always with her hand close to her wand, ready for any aggression sign.

Sun, Nov 5th 2023 06:14   Edited on Sun, Nov 5th 2023 08:14

"Too right," Caffann replied with a lopsided grin. "I shouldn't have been so loud though, sorry."   Hopefully they'd simply disturbed someone's nap. The alternatives were quite jumbled in Caffann's head, and only discovering the truth would soothe the malestrom. They scooted back to the rear door of the vehicle, able to make out only a few of the letters etched there. As they traced one of what had once been a vibrant business name and probably called tons of folks to line up for good eats, Caffann wondered to themself whether the caravan had been truly retrofitted or if it'd been abandoned, the food inside left to grow mold that was now sentient and bumping about.   Curiosity wasn't going to satisfy itself.   They shifted their wandering fingers to wrap around the door handle and attempted a hefty tug.
Sun, Nov 5th 2023 09:43

Caffann's approach to the door of the truck was met with even more scuffling and disturbance. Whatever laid in wait, it did not seem content with just hiding.   Caffann yanked the door open. Their fingers met resistance, the door gunked by sand and rust. Prevailing over the first clunk, the door swung open. The Sauthei is blasted by a smell all too familiar in their line of work. Rotten food.   [UBS success! 7 total over 3 difficulty]   The scent lingered through Kitersha's nostrils soon after, carried downwind right for the Hiserabi.   A shrill tirade of squawks and throaty barks stunned Caffann's ears. Before they could even remove their hand from the door, three small Synthisaurs burst from the door into the open air of the plains. Standing knee high, they vanished quick into the grasses surrounding them.   When Caffann recovers, they can tell this food truck has been out here for a while. Cans and cabinetry lay ripped by tiny teeth, what food was left had rotted to nothing but mold.   Something in the back of the truck caught Caffann's alert eyes, a small medical kit sat unopened on the counter. They'd have to tip-toe across stomach-churning rot to get to it.
Sun, Nov 5th 2023 11:11

"Ohhhh uuughhhh," Caffann moaned as they got pounded by sound and scent all at once. At least, they supposed as they gagged from the stench, their face was still in one piece, given the teeny-saurs hadn't gone for the eyes but merely escaped.   A moment later, standing in front of the open door, they weren't altogether sure they should be grateful their nose was still intact. Any romanticized notions about the dishes once prepared in this truck vanished as puddles of slime and fuzzy mold filled their vision. "Fuckin' nightmare."   And a tragedy, besides. For more than one reason, not the least of which was the loss of a potential trove of--their stomach gurgled unpleasantly at the thought of the word "tasties" being ever associated with this mess.   "This is why people shouldn't leave their pets locked up in overcooked vehicles." Unease twisted their stomach--nope, that was still just the rotting smell. Evidence of this foul concoction had been hidden from the outside, and they hadn't thought the damn tin can had been sitting out here THAT long. They weren't even sure that it had ever really been repurposed as anything else. Just left here. Caffann grimaced. "If those guys were left behind while their owner took a quick stroll in the Basin..."   Then they'd been here a long damn time, waiting for someone who's never coming back. Warily, they eyeballed the container across the way. The rest of their words came out muffled as they burrowed their face deep into their collar. "...then their owner probably shouldn't have left the medkit behind, you figure Kitersha?"
Mon, Nov 6th 2023 05:16   Edited on Mon, Nov 6th 2023 08:25

"Eh... I'm not sure they are pets? Although at the same time, I guess they could have tried attacking us if they weren't pets." it's a bit hard to understand Kitersha since she's covering her mouth and nose with her hands. "This is such a bad smell. But, as we say, what we find today might be useful tomorrow. Or later. I don't think anyone is coming back to this truck anyway. Lemme try grab it quickly so we can leave this stench, last thing I want is to smell it on my fur all this travel."

Tue, Nov 7th 2023 12:52

Caffann looked over the moldy ruins of a days worth of ingredients wasted. At the back of the van, a removed panel near the meissner mounting point had been ripped off. Those little raptors were no pets, more like racoons drawn in to an easy meal. Kitersha hopped up into the back.

The 'easy meal' squelched beneath Kitersha's boots, even in the spots that looked clean, a thin layer of grease and grime made movement through the rot a harrowing proposition. They walked through the small corridor between grill and prep station.

Kitersha made the trek without slip nor fall, though their boots would most certainly need a good mile to get rid of the stench. They hefted the first-aid kit, saved from the layer of grime by the plate it had been set on.
Wed, Nov 8th 2023 07:52

"I'm gonna have to clean my boots... Well, at least I hope I can clean them. Let's just get away from this stench." Kitersha said after getting out the truck, while trying to "clean" her boots with the dirt. At least, Kitersha thinks, dirt doesn't smells bad.

She packed away the medical kit in her backpack and looked at Caffann. "Any plans? Or we are just going to go in a line to try find some mushrooms? Or you plan on checking more people's cars?"

Tue, Nov 14th 2023 03:02

"Ah, that's how they got in. Rowdy pests, then." Caffann had been about to put a very, very reluctant hand on the side of the truck to heft themself inside the mire of stench when Kitersha did the honors. "You're a hell of a pal."   Not having to enter the food tomb lifted their spirits enormously, though their nose still crinkled. Caffann stepped back in a hurry as their friend returned with the boon and they considered the kit, absently scratching at the base of one of their horns.   "You can clean them all you like; I don't think this toxic waste will leave my nostrils any time soon." Caffann frowned.   That could be a problem, not being able to smell anything but nasty goop...but it was a problem they could deal with if it occurred, and they shook off the worry for now. "Oh no, I'm done," Caffann agreed. "One vile vehicle is enough for a lifetime." Or at least the next hour...however long their curiosity remembered the lesson. They gave Kitersha a huge grin. "Shroom time! Let's go get what we came for!"
Wed, Nov 15th 2023 01:09   Edited on Wed, Nov 15th 2023 01:16

The stench of rotten organic matter trailed them from the vehicles to the entrance of the Basin. Kitersha's boots squelched for the first few steps on solid ground, though with help of the long grasses and gravel pathing, soon it was just the stench. And even that faded to no more than a mere unpleasant whiff in the air. A touch of rot that pinched at their nostrils with every other step.   Ahead of them, the entrance to the Basin sat framed between two hills. The two approached the gravel-pathed entrance, welcomed by a litany of signs warning of the dangers. Holograms plastered onto metal backdrops came to life at their presence.   "Poaching: Removing wildlife from this area is a crime! Report pirates to a local Ranger at—" The number had been corrupted by a ne'er-do-well.   "WARNING: This is a wild ecology, and you are not the Apex!" A series of characterized Synthisaurs stood above a broken-in-half stick figure."   "Certain fungal blooms present in the Karstway Basin may cause asphyxiation or severe discomfort! Do not enter without proper equipment!"   With the mandated warnings out of the way, the next sign upped the mood. "Welcome to the Lotos Karstway Basin! Respect Nature, and it will respect you!" An anthropomorphized raptor Ranger, wearing the traditional green, yellow, and brown outfit saluted them as they transitioned from the flat plains behind them, and into the narrowing valley that no doubt led to their ultimate fungal bounty.   Already, the air chilled underneath the shade of the hills and the peaks of the tallest Lotos Karstway fungal trees crested over the curving pathway downwards. The trail descended into a steep descent, with deep-rooted moss covered the gravel as moisture bubbled upwards from the Basin below.
Wed, Nov 22nd 2023 11:27

Caffann stared longer than necessary at the "WARNING" sign and chewed on their lower lip. Sign like that'd be good out in the junked-up lot they'd just left; unless it wasn't warning about those little pests and instead about bigger versions of those little guys hanging out in the Basin itself. The little costume on the next sign made them laugh, cheer smoothing over the edge of worry that had tried to worm in.   "Gonna respect some mushrooms right into this stomach," Caffann whispered over their shoulder at their friend. Taking their rebreather out of their pack, they stepped onto the path with the least disturbed bunches of dust, rocks, and moss. Once they grabbed some more of this earthy air to clear out the nasty food stench that still clung to them, they'd slip on the mask. For now though, they simply started walking. "Heave to and down we go!"   The sheer PINK dominating everything below them put them in mind of a much more relaxing experience than a place deemed dangerous enough to bring a friend on a harvesting gig, and Caffann kept alert as they made their way below the rim of the Basin, curving a path that would lead under the canopy.
Thu, Nov 23rd 2023 09:05

Let's be honest here, all the warning signs? They made Kitersha worry a bit. Pirates, dinosaurs, fungal asphyxiation... Kit didn't mind the pirates too much, but she can only guess that other Synthisaurs not necessarily would run when bothered and the fungal asphyxiation? She kept a hand on her pocket, where she had stored the inhaler. But she trusts Caffann, and in theory, they knows what they are doing, so Kit tried to ignore all the warnings.

"Make sure to not eat all the mushrooms we'll get or your group will get angry." said Kit with a laugh. "Come on, let's make this quick so you can taste them." she gave a friendly pat to Caffann's head, between their horns, before start walking towards the path her friend pointed to.

Fri, Nov 24th 2023 07:50   Edited on Fri, Nov 24th 2023 07:52

The mountain path winded between peaks, and they continued downwards. Their footing never faltered, thanks to the deep-rooted fungus that clung to the rock pathway. Their path took them down six meters to a broad ledge. The ledge wrapped around the mountain border of the Basin, and it gave way to another length of downwards steps. They continued down until they were at least 20 meters below the basin's lip.
Lotos Forest by MidJourney
The temperature descended with them, never quite cold but certainly a 7°C cooler than the sweat-inducing 30°C at the top. Out of the desert and into the fungaloid jungle. Near the end of their descent Caffan and Kitersha found themselves surrounded a fog of gentle pink that tingled their collective noses.   Fighting the urge to sneeze, they made the final descent towards the floor of the Lotos Karstway Basin, now under the cover of brilliant light filtered through the yellow of the Lotos trees broad yellow flowers.   As Caffann hoped, it was indeed sporing season, now they just had to find the quarry amidst the dense natural reserve that was the Basin itself.
Tue, Jan 23rd 2024 09:01

The spores were watering Kit's eyes and made her sneeze almost constantly. It was hard to walk around and see where one was stepping! She kept trying to not sneeze, which ended up making her whole face hurt. At one point, she grabbed some loose cloth pieces from her backpack to cover her face, to try to sneeze a bit less, but there were a lot of spores around them...

Tue, Feb 13th 2024 02:56   Edited on Sat, Feb 24th 2024 11:53

Nearing the end of the walk, Caffann admired the change from dust and dry to damp and dewy. They swiped at their nose and then shot a look over their shoulder at their sneezing Hiserabi friend. "Aw now, we best mask up before the spores get stuck in our noses and we sprout our own personal mushrooms." Still walking, Caffann jammed their fists against their nostrils, mimicking stalks of fungus in the unfortunate location and wiggling them about. Laughing, they added, "Then again, with them plugged up we'd be safe from sporing season, right? OOH! Maybe we can start a fashion trend!"   On the heels of their jovial words, Caffann reckoned they'd had long enough to clear out the earlier stench, and finally lifted their rebreather to do its thing.
Sat, Feb 17th 2024 08:18

The final portion of the hike down into the base of the valley lead Caffann and Kitersha down a steep incline with carved stone steps, no doubt done by a metacaster. Without railings and suffering from constant allergic sneezes the climb proved itself to be treacherous.   Caffann took a wrong step and noticed the slippery patch of moss too late. Their foot slid off the hold and she began to fall. It was a twenty foot slope to the bottom, not a good tumble to start their adventure with.   Kitersha noticed the fall through their sneezes, the Hiserabi was just within tail length, though helping would risk two people tumbling down instead of just the one.
Sat, Feb 17th 2024 09:04

Seeing Caffann about to fall off, a panicked squeal left Kitersha as she quickly tried to grab her friend with her tail, by surrounding Caffann's torso, and searched for something she could grab to help her not fall while trying to help her friend.

Mon, Feb 19th 2024 11:23

Kitersha's tail finds Caffann's midsection, saving them from the nasty tumble.
Sat, Feb 24th 2024 11:41   Edited on Sat, Feb 24th 2024 11:53

Just as they had opted to try for a wobbly leap to one side, Kit had come up with a better plan. Caffann let out a loud "OOMPH" as their friend's tail thumped across their diaphragm. Wheezing and flailing their arms to regain balance, the verin leaned into her assist enroute to scramble for clear ground again on the next step down. Trying to suck in a deep breath meant they, for once, had no words with which to crack a joke. Instead, coughing and tilting an extremely sheepish look at Kitersha, Caffann popped out their middle fingers, aiming them at the offending swath of moss up the stone walkway.
Sun, Mar 3rd 2024 08:05   Edited on Sun, Mar 3rd 2024 08:05

With the threat of gravity fully defeated, the two continued their trek downwards into the bottom layer of the Basin. They stood underneath the massive caps of the Lotus flower shaped mushrooms. The light filtered yellow and pink through the caps, and what light came in unfiltered was devoured by wide-leafed ferns.       The Pollen thickened down here, clawing at their sinuses even through the envirosuit. Caffann's practiced eye recognized some of the dusty spores that collected in the creases of their jackets.   Most looked akin to white unmelting snowflakes, from the giant blooms above. The yellow dusting came from the symbiotic species living off the larger blooms.   A few paths have been forged in the mix of tourism and scavenging, one path led deeper into the jungle of flowers and mushrooms, while another forked off to circle around the natural barrier holding the Basin in.
Sun, Mar 10th 2024 04:46

"Well," Caffann said with a cough, "I'm awake now! Thanks for the brilliant assist--I mean it, that was good of ya."   They grimaced up at Kitersha and then scowled down at the moss, then picked at the spores settling onto their clothes. Internally, Caffann's irritation with the moss vanished as they excitedly identified the mushrooms in bloom around them. "Taaaasty treats!~~" they sang out after a moment, and as they peered at the two clearly defined tracks, seeking hints of the mushrooms they'd been sent to scrounge up, they decided the tastiest of them were definitely further in.   But the way directly ahead seemed too open. They'd taken one path less travelled, but that didn't mean 'no one' had been there, and so the easiest paths to access were likely the ones harvesters would take.   "Let's head around a bit, find another way in that isn't so obvious, eh? I want to find the best of the best, the patches of our shrooms that are the untouchediest--is that a word?" Caffann mused as they pointed to the outer path and walked ahead.
Mon, Apr 15th 2024 06:59

Something in Kitersha brain connected and she remembered the inhaler. After a quick use of it and readjusting the cloth to cover her mouth and nose, Kit started following Caffann towards the outer path. Only one thing crossed Kit's mind; "I wish the outer path as less spores than in here" she muttered to herself.

As she caught up to where Caffann was, she started paying attention where both Caff and her were stepping, last thing both need was a broken or injured leg if they had to climb back from where they came from.

Tue, Apr 16th 2024 12:10

The path outside of the basin widened out a short way in. Both the attentive Caffann and Kitersha stepped over the furrows of the packed dirt left by the passing of wheeled vehicles. The tracks looked old, at least a couple days.   How did vehicles get down here? Whose tracks are these? The questions raised as they circled around the Basin containing wall.   Around the next bend, an obstacle revealed itself. The Barrier wall had suffered from a landslide. The shaped dirt and the metal bar and netting placed down to help it stay stable, had given way.   A pile of grey and tan rubble sat eight feet tall in front of them. They could cut through the forest itself, and forge their own path, or it did look climbable with the right path.
Wed, Apr 17th 2024 05:40

Caffann's usual cheer dimmed slightly as the landslide entered their line of sight. "Foo," they said, and peered in every direction around the obstacle as they approached. Nothing seemed viable for a quick bypass, and they hadn't seen an entry to the forest yet. At the base of the dirt mountain, they kicked the landslide. "Figures."   "I'm not climbing that." Caffann turned to Kitersha, holding up their arms in a goofy pose that flexed what little muscle existed in their biceps. "We're saving these guns for the picking."
Wed, Apr 17th 2024 06:25

A snicker escaped Kit's mouth after seeing her friend goofy pose, "Maybe you should save those guns and use a knife." replied before following them towards the forest.
Wed, Apr 17th 2024 06:59

Caffann grinned, then stared at the looming basin foliage that was their next best option. "Guess we're going the path REALLY less traveled." A small price to pay for the best of the best harvest, at least, that's what they were hoping in order to keep their optimism high. Not having a path was not the smartest move, but Caffann had never made the brightest decisions--and a little hard work always reaped hefty rewards.   Carefully, they began to breach the outer edge of the mushroomy land, watching their feet to keep from sliding on more unexpected moss.
Sun, Apr 21st 2024 12:11

The pair of adventurers settled on forging their own path, trodding over the thick ankle-deep coverage of the forest floor. It proved a tiring trek with constant steps over thick fungal root networks. At least the trees above kept them shaded from the barrage of the suns.

Each step onto the mycellium-rich overgrowth sunk into the ground, like treading on wet sponges. The muddy soil threatened to suck on their boots, while the tangles of the overbrush and thick bundles of roots tried to knock them down.   Through careful planning of their steps, they made it through the thickest part of the overgrowth. Kitersha caught sight of a path first. In their push for the path, Caffann took a step and felt their heart drop, then their stomach.   The ground beneath Caffanns feet had given out and swallowed them whole. Caffann found themselves engulfed by the darkness, eyes yet to adjust to the sudden change. Kitersha is left alone on the surface, looking back at the spot where their friend had just been standing!

"Caffann? Caffann where are you? Is this one of your games? We are on a job, this is no time to play..." screams Kit to the nothingness around her.

After waiting for a bit (a short time, she doesn't have lot of patience) and getting no reply from Caffann, worry started to creep under her skin and decided to follow their steps backwards to try see what happened to Caffann. The spores have her nose rendered useless and it bothers her quite a lot, would be faster (she thinks at least) to find Caffann with her nose, but alas, beggars can't be begging.

Kitersha turned around and spotted the collapsed root system that Caffann had been swallowed up by. Kitershas eyes caught the glint of Caffann's horns several feet down.   Caffann, trapped in the darkness below begins to adjust the light and finds solid ground beneath them. It felt like a floor, rather than the dirt and stone of a cave. The Disturbance of the ground did not go unnoticed. Somewhere in the dark in front of Caffann came unsettling clicks of chitinous limbs against the floor.
