Guess what! There's a book now! — (MxM, Thriller, Erotic)

Mastercraft Respirator

While the citadel-cities of Jhoutai may be designed to protect its inhabitants against seasonal cycles of spore winds and glow rain, there is no shortage of other aerosol threats such as haze, ash, and plague. As such, it's common for Jhoutaioans to not just keep a mask handy, but to have fashionable options.

Design Your Own

Base Form and Fit

Materials

Popular materials for the outer face include lightweight ceramics, rutas chitin, bioplastic, cap leather, or lacquered wood laminates. Popular materials for reinforcement include: fibrous resin, bone, chitin, copper, and steel.

Fit and Seal

The ideal fit complements the face to prevent inflow while allowing a quick outflow with minimal blowback and no humidity accrual. Tailoring is common, especially for long-term wearers.

Straps

Wide, adjustable bands of leather-corded chain wrap around the wearer's head, horns, or ears. They are secured with toggle clasps, ceramic buttons, or braided loops. Elastics are considered cheap. Tying is considered either archaic or infantile.

Filtration System

Removable Filter Modules

Encased in brass or etched alloy cylinders, filters use layers of charcoal, pressed mycelium mesh, and fine mineral sand. These cartridges are swappable and inserted via discreet side or under-chin ports.

Valve Assemblies

Breathing valves—often butterfly-style or iris-mechanism—control airflow and are decorated with etched sigils or house crests. Some open with a soft, musical click.

Internal Baffles

Thin reeds or spiral chutes inside the mask regulate temperature and moisture, preventing condensation and voice distortion.

Decorations

Relief Carving: Common among artisans. Masks are carved with scenes of myth, ancestor faces, geometric fractals, or flowing fauna patterns.   Inlays: Fine mother-of-pearl, obsidian glass, or pressed seed crystal decorate the cheeks and valve guards.   Paints and Patinas: Mineral-based paints, some photosensitive, shift hue subtly under daylight. Copper green, hematite red, and lapis blue are popular.

Browse the Selection

1 — Sheer Bandana

Essentially a cloth. Thwarted by a strong wind, but it will protect you from a mouthful of dust.

Brightly colored and playfully patterned.

It's of good make. You could pawn it off for an upgrade.

It's well stitched around the edge to prevent fraying.

A bit of woven-in fog net helps your mouth humid.

2 — Stage Mask

A simple muzzle of thin leather stretched over a copper cage. Better used as a prop.

Hand-dyed with a clan color and worn by a local performer.

Polished copper passes for gold at a glance.

The stitching should hold up through a few scuffles.

The built-in whistle is great for distractions and annoying friends.

3 — Hand Me Down

A hand-me-down from someone who clearly didn’t love it. It functions—barely.

It bears a scratched inscription of a short poem about resilience.

Patchwork from multiple fabrics with interesting textures.

Reinforced with wire ribs to hold its shape.

Contains a drinking hose behind a flap.

4 — Cornerstore Special

A craftsmarket standard. Functional, unspectacular.

Decorated with soft embroidery with lucky bug patterns.

Uses real plant-dyed fabric that’s soft against the skin.

A wax-sealed liner that improves wind resistance.

Includes a perfumed ampoule with a pleasant aroma.

5 — Budget Fashion

Looks better than it performs, but decent enough for casual use.

Styled with fashionable rivets and matching accessories.

Shell is made from imitation nacre that glints in the sun.

Filter latches shut tightly. No rattling even when you shake your head.

Conceals a compact flint striker in the filter cap.

6 — Journeyman's Choice

Work-grade mask designed for tradesfolk. Reliable and practical.

Embossed with the mark of a respected guild.

The wood inlay comes from a rare fragrant tree.

Outer cage has survived a drop from a second floor.

Has an inset cameo of the wearer's family seal.

Lined with aromatic silk that self-neutralizes odors.

8

A well-tuned tool for explorers and tacticians. Fine craftsmanship.

It accentuates your features in an attractive way.

Radiates status—recognized and respected by all castes.

Gold-threaded seals, flawless finish, zero imperfections.

Impact-tested against armor-piercing rounds.

Comes with a speaker for thunderous projection.

Red Joker — The Laughing Paragon

A mask of mythic prestige. Its individual reputation eclipses the memory of prior bearers. Whether induvidual or in a crowd, people instinctively defer to the wearers clarion voice. The wearer may enter any hall, on bearing alone, and may claim sanctuary from those who recognize its sigil.

It demands offerings of blood and wine.

Black Joker — The Scowling Realist

A feared and vaunted survivalist mask tested by time, vacuum, digestion, and war. It will outlive you but, if you use it right, it won't outlive you by as long. There are several tools built into it — lockpicks, wiring tools, an intake for an air or water line, and a water purifier — but the centerpiece is an enchanted automatic respirator that seals the moment it detects poisons or disease.

It demands to be well used, or it will grow bored.
