Base Form and Fit
Popular materials for the outer face include lightweight ceramics, rutas chitin, bioplastic, cap leather, or lacquered wood laminates. Popular materials for reinforcement include: fibrous resin, bone, chitin, copper, and steel.
The ideal fit complements the face to prevent inflow while allowing a quick outflow with minimal blowback and no humidity accrual. Tailoring is common, especially for long-term wearers.
Wide, adjustable bands of leather-corded chain wrap around the wearer's head, horns, or ears. They are secured with toggle clasps, ceramic buttons, or braided loops. Elastics are considered cheap. Tying is considered either archaic or infantile.
Filtration System
Encased in brass or etched alloy cylinders, filters use layers of charcoal, pressed mycelium mesh, and fine mineral sand. These cartridges are swappable and inserted via discreet side or under-chin ports.
Breathing valves—often butterfly-style or iris-mechanism—control airflow and are decorated with etched sigils or house crests. Some open with a soft, musical click.
Thin reeds or spiral chutes inside the mask regulate temperature and moisture, preventing condensation and voice distortion.
