Abyssal Airship

Abyssal airships are designed for long hauls through the abyssal layer of Jhoutai's continental coral plates — a cavernous maze of branching darkness and the occasional oasis of light. The winds in the abyss can come from any direction and with unexpected force, capsizing standard airships by slamming them into walls. Abyssal airships have to be built with a kinetic barrier cage to soften any impact with the walls.

These ships are most often used for transporting cargo from abyssal mines to the surface, or as transit between abyssal or undercity colonies.

Appearance and Features

A long, beveled brick of an airship platform with an elevated captain's deck that can be withdrawn back into the ship to slim its profile. Meissner plating all along the outside and inside allow it to roll up to 270 degrees before the crew or cargo is affected by gravity, which facilitates turns through the more narrow caverns of the abyss.

Cargo is onloaded and locked in place via rail connections on the top and bottom of the containers. Below deck is the crew quarters, which is just enough space for a small kitchenette and resting and self-care facilities which can support a handful of people at a time.

The Volan's antigrav engine hummed like a priest as the captain threaded its bow through the gnarled roots of the Thruidinai Cluster. Spotlights installed into the walls here cast an eerie glow across the scraped and scarred stonecoral bark protecting the massive roots, and the sloshing waves below licked at the remains of the ships which had left them.

Safer routes existed, but when crews are paid by the job, safety gets lax. The only reason captains hadn't blown down the roots was because their connected Nege Trees a kilometer above supported several towns across their branches. Of course, such risk didn't stop them from at least trying to squeeze through.

Over the course of an hour, the captain performed a 69-point turn to twist and squeeze the ship through the maze of roots, at times even canting the ship so far to its side that the tipping alarm was tripped. We all clung to our seats, muttering prayers that our godless captain would never.

Still, it saved us a 5 hour detour, which meant we could squeeze out an extra trip each week, and a 25% profit margin lead over any other ships.
