Verith, Grand Warden of Darkness
The Verith is the dark counterpart to the Fasar.
The Verith's job is not only to help maintain the The Aetheric Veil, but also to watch over the world and make sure no major harm befalls it. Granted a fractional piece of the divine, this is well within the power of any Verith.
Transmission & Vectors
The power is technically airborne, but can and will travel through any medium to reach its next vessel.
Causes
Created by the God of Darkness and Destruction. A gift of the divine, it is a ball of power roughly double the size of an adult human heart, which enters the vessel's body and suffuses their entire being. It then proceeds to alter them on the fundamental level.
Symptoms
Upon receiving the power, the new Verith is altered on the genetic level. Their skin desaturates while their blood darkens, and their eyes glow bright white, regardless of the color they started as. Their canines turn to fangs, and their nails harden into short, sharp claws. They grow hardier, no longer requiring food or sleep, able to subsist solely off the core of power within their being, and heal rapidly if injured.
If slain by anything other than a weapon crafted by the divine meant to end their life, their body simply disperses into energy and reforms somewhere else, and will recover in a matter of days to weeks.
Treatment
There are three ways to be rid of the power: Be slain by the Fasar's weapon, be slain by the divine weapon granted to humanity, or willingly perform a complex and painful ritual to pass the power on to a chosen successor.
The latter leaves residual power behind, as well as all the genetic alterations made. However, biomancy could clear up any unwanted leftover genetic changes.
Affected Groups
The Verith is typically selected from individuals with strong affinity for dark arcana, often with secondary affinities for earth or water. The power tends to seek out those with analytical, disciplined personalities comfortable with solitude and capable of making difficult decisions. Candidates must possess exceptional mental fortitude to handle entropic energies without risk of corruption. The power often gravitates toward individuals who have experienced significant loss or overcome great hardship, suggesting that certain types of life experience prepare one for the burden of the Verith's duties.
Prevention
Only those who are born blunt are immune to becoming a Verith. Likewise, a blunt device can keep the power from entering a would-be host.
History
The first Verith and Fasar were created in 3030 RN - Erathmus and Yrdien. Brothers, they did their best to uphold the balance, and for their long lives, the world knew peace and prosperity.
Eventually, feeling like they had lived long enough, they slew each other, divine weapons piercing the other's heart simultaneously, and their powers fled their bodies to seek new vessels.
