Highborn & Lowborn
There is no acknowledged middle class; anyone who isn't born into nobility is classed as Lowborn. It is possible for a Lowborn to attain enough wealth and status to reach nobility, but they are still called Lowborn. Their offspring however will be considered Highborn. Marrying a Highborn does not change a Lowborn to a Highborn; they are still classed as Lowborn and will be such until the day they die. It is called Highborn and Lowborn because that is what one is -born- into. This is one of the means used in tracing lineage, because maveshad value their ancestors.
A Highborn who suffers misfortune and loses their wealth and assets can fall from nobility. Until the ill-fortuned regains his or her wealth, any following offspring are classed as Lowborn. A fallen noble can marry a Highborn to regain their status, and their following children will be considered Highborn.
Lowborn have, at maximum, three-syllable first names.
Highborn have a minimum of four-syllable first names, and can reach to 7-9 syllables.
-This is the quickest way to determine social status of new acquaintances.
First middle names are decided by the parents and may be as long as desired. Second middle names are earned by the individual when they do something in their life that defines who they are; this name is often used as a nickname, and can be a word as well as a legitimate name. IE, moon, sunshine, starfire, venomblade, darksight, etc, of course translated into their native tongue as opposed to using the English word or name. Last names are passed down from the parents; and when a couple marries, the woman's family name is usually taken. If agreed upon, the men's last name, or both spouses last names, can be used. In the case of same-sex marriages, the name is often joint, but one of the two names is usually agreed upon. For polygamous marriages, it can be a joining of all the last names of each spouse, or if they choose, they may create a single, new, family name, or simply select one name of any spouse to use for all.
There is clear segregation among the two within society.
Highborn, and Lowborn nobles, are allowed into what is generally considered 'more refined' establishments and are granted access to exclusive events and auctions. They are also permitted to own slaves and servants. Some will be given rights to own farmland, and act as the equivalent of a fief lord, overseeing Lowborn employees who tend the fields and/or livestock.
Highborn can also hire a small entourage of guards for personal use, but are never allowed more than a maximum of fifteen. Size of entourage is dependant on size of property. In the case of a family feud, the guards are forbidden to directly participate in any open combat. This is to limit the damage that can result from escalated tensions, and to deter combat within city limits.
Highborn also get the opportunity to increase property holdings, and are often allowed larger houses and families than Lowborn. This is mainly due to the fact that nobility has the funds to afford and maintain such things.
Lowborn, of course, have their own exclusive organized events, which nobility tends to ignore and refrain from participating in.
-smaller houses, limit of two children, not allowed personal guards.
-if suffered a severe misfortune, can offer services as a live-in servant, or, if at rock-bottom, can commit to slavery
-there are homeless shelters run by religious & government organizations, and the equivalent of soup kitchens for these unfortunates
-if reduced to poverty due to debt, a Highborn can take the Lowborn in as a slave, and slowly pay off the debts of said Lowborn. The enslaved Lowborn is forbidden from marriage or reproducing until this debt is repaid to his or her owner. If already married and/or with children, all spouses are taken into slavery, and depending on child age, they are either sent to a temple of their choosing, or live with the family as slaves as well. [Children of puberty age and younger are always sent to a temple. Children who have yet to be potty trained and taught to walk stay with the parents.]
Highborn generally live near the central area of any given city, and its multiple circles if has any. Lowborn tend to live in the farther reaches.
Funerary and Memorial customs
Handling of the Deceased
Due to limited land, the bodies of the deceased are broken down into their base components and harvested for reagents and ingredients to use in magic, alchemy, and sciences. What can't be used in this way is used to fertilize farmland.
A funeral service is held for the friends and family of the deceased, but there is no headstone or burial. Many families have an ancestral altar they visit if they wish to mourn or pray, and dedicated non-religious temples keep records of the deceased; these are called Halls of the Dead.
