Temple Attendant

A temple attendant was a profession in the Ancient Viri Empire which consisted of looking after the temple building(s) in their locale.   There were many, many rules that temple attendants had to adhere to for this role. The slightest infraction was heavily punished. Attendants had to undergo routine cleansing rituals multiple times a day before setting foot in the temple itself and before entering certain areas. The rules weren't just about how they managed their work, either; it also pertained to their lifestyle, and were incredibly strict. Many common pasttimes were prohibited, certain foods and drink were restricted, and they were expected to give their entire spiritual selves to Etervir and not seek any sort of companionship. The breaking of these rules could result in prison or even execution.   Each temple was for a specific person or people group to worship at. The nobles had personal temples, whereas the common people were divided by certain criteria such as sex, marital status, type of profession, et cetera depending on the region. Others were not allowed to set foot inside. The temple attendant was exempt from this as a necessity, but only for the purposes of maintaining the structure, and only at certain times when worshippers were not around or in a different section.   The last record made by a temple attendant was by the individual who cared for the Emperor's Temple, on the day the Emperor was killed inside it by Allshadow. His personal diary relates the horror and dilemma he faced watching the temple he'd cared for since late adolescence desecrated by his Emperor's murder.
