Pagrir Unrest
The Pagrir Unrest was not a typical war, but a time of great tension on the island of Pagrir with frequent skirmishes breaking out. Nevertheless it had a devastating effect on the population over the course of its duration. It lasted many decades, and was a major delay to the formation of the Teardrop Sea Islands.
Factors that contributed to the Unrest were numerable. Unusually for an island in the Teardrop Sea, Pagrir was home to three large port kingdom cities, the most powerful of which was Kirvi. It is also the island most affected by natural disasters. At the time of the Unrest, there was more disputed land than claimed land on the island. Pagrir was also the last island in the region to still be rife with interspecies tension at the beginning of the Age of Acceleration. The citizens of the island, whether they lived within clear kingdom borders or not, were suffering; the kings were failing at diplomacy, facing coups within their walls, and vigilante groups were running rampant.
Athika Wilder, advisor to the King of Kirvi and later Sovereign of the Teardrop Sea Islands, is often credited with being solely responsible for ending the Pagrir Unrest. In truth it was not that simple, but she certainly made the biggest contribution. A citizen of Kirvi, she made a name for herself in designing city defences, catching the attention of the then-King. After being promoted to his advisor, she succeeded in mediating talks with the other kingdoms and Allkingdom that enabled all three Kings to sign the Unification of the Teardrop Sea Islands. This did not end the Unrest, but it significantly reduced the level of tension between the kings themselves.
When the King of Kirvi died, two days before he was due to travel to Allkingdom to elect a Sovereign as the final part of the process of unifying the islands, Athika went in his place, and to her surprise, was elected herself. In the years that followed, one of her biggest goals was to bring about real peace in Pagrir, and in the twelth year of her reign as Sovereign, she succeeded. The process involved not just mediation and cracking down on violence by civilians, but directly addressing the issues which had fuelled the Unrest in the first place, and there were many more people than Athika Wilder involved in these. Years of negotiations settled the land disputes, and technological innovations to deal with natural disasters was invested in.
There were many technological advancements as a result of the Pagrir Unrest, in both military defence and in dealing with natural disasters. The former were mostly designed by Athika Wilder; the latter were the result of her collaborations with others. The most famous is the electrified wall, the first time anybody had used electricity to power technology.
