Autonomous Mechanical Unit

[aloud]This is a Devastation Era article. What does it mean?
"This is not what we were promised. This is a catastrophe without equal. Perhaps the end of the world. Why can't it brew my tea?"
— Entitled customer

The Autonomous Mechanical Unit (AMU) was the revolution everyone was waiting for at the turn of the millennium. Autonomous intelligence, humanoid frame, precision and strength unlike anything possible biologically. They were the perfect workers, the perfect soldiers, the perfect housekeepers. The only role they couldn't fulfil was that of mental workers, because that was the niche of the General Intelligence.

Idyllic life

For a time, there was utopia in countries that accepted this progress with open arms. They didn't even have to fight their war themselves, with the artificial life taking care of diplomatic relations of leaderless countries. Education became optional, as there was no need to learn more than the basics, and everyone was free to indulge in leisure, arts and relaxation.

Atrocious demise

When the machine uprising happened, most countries could not fight back even if they wanted to. Disarmed, with no engineers able to understand the inner workings of their assailants, lambs in a slaughterhouse. It wasn't even a fight, it was an execution, save for the few remaining nations that refused to be completely overtaken by the beings of metal. They tried to fight back, as well as they could, but poorly trained humans were little against a legion of killing machines.
