[UE 2] The Gnome Council is formed by Ser Nomilis Hizzenboots. Ser Hizzenboots was a mage of some renown and was known to be a pioneer in the fields of rejuvenation and transmutation magic. Holy water that was blessed by Ser Hizzenboots is said to be able to bring those lost in combat back from death. His quarters still stand at the center of Spritzlewerks and is now a candle shop, in honor of his vocation as a prolific candlemaker. Clerics and priests from all over Espen come to purchase his wares which are not only candles but chalk and incense of the highest quality. The Gnome Council, after its establishment and having encountered no other empires quickly declares all of Espen to be under Gnomish rule. An act that would set the precedent for Gnomish diplomatic actions for centuries to come. There is little information surrounding the actual construction of the city, this has led to many fantastic and nearly unbelievable claims of its origins. Some say the city was built in a week by thousands of gnomes working night and day in concert. Others say Mazzu, Goddess of the Sea shaped the buildings from water, made solid by the beliefs of her followers. However the most fantastic of these claims is that the magic the Gnome Council wields simply pulled the sunken city of Spritzleweks up from the seafloor up onto dry land.
[UE 3] The Capitol of Nin was founded by Usor Copperbeard. The Great Forge of Alder The Wise was the first thing that he built and from that he forged weapons that led the dwarven king to many victories. In fact his legend grew so large that every other race in Espen flocked to Nin and Dwarven cities to gain access to his weapons. To chronicle the greatness of the dwarven people he commissioned the first book.
[UE 6] After an initially tumultuous interaction with the dwarves, the Gnomes sign the Baublelite Accords, forging a partnership with the Dwarves of the north. The Baublelite Accords gave the gnomes exclusive rights and access at all dwarven ports making them a nautical power in the north as well as specific weapon provision requirements to be delivered by the Dwarves. The Dwarves were provided with both access to the Gnomes stores of Everore they had stockpiled as well as a steady supply of potions of warming that served the northern dwarvish populations well. Lastly, there was the Gnomish Iron Tax. The Tax is placed on weapons that were imbued with magical power at dwarvish forges, using Gnomish Everore. 2 of every 5 weapons cast using Everore is sent back to Twiddlewyren
[UE 68] The City of Beryl shines bright as the Genasi open their sacred land to humans and elves for the first time. Embassies for the humans and elves formed quickly and the Genasi enjoyed a rich exchange of culture. The city of Beryl quickly grew into the most densely populated city in Espen. Flintknap Chandler a Fire Genasi who'd grown quite famous invited a small human tribe, elven elders and a dwarf said to represent the Vulcanites (a fledgling religion at the time) to a summit to discuss further cultural exchange and treaties between their peoples. The summits were to be held every 5 years on the summer solstace.
[UE 88] The sky rebelled, winds threatened to uproot Spritzlewekrs from the ground. Lightning struck at the foundations of Spritzlewerks as a hurricane battered the coasts. In desperation Hizzenboots implores Mazzu to save their city from destruction, sacrificing his hand on the DarkTide altar inside the Temple by the Sea he proved his dedication to Mazzu. Valkur and Mazzu waged battle for a week the sea itself rising to shield the city from Valkur's wrath. Ultimately, the sky was calmed and a maddened wizard found wandering on the beach was said to be possessed by Mazzu himself to deliver a message known today as The Warning of Mazzu: Should Spritzlewekrs ever fall to man, the God of the Sky shall come to reclaim what is his. Hizzenboots took this warning and from it, he birthed the Shimmering Hand a devout order intent on protecting the Gnomish Council at all costs. Those who find themselves in the graces of Mazzu are blessed how Ser Hizzenboots was blessed, and can themselves harness his power, and a given the shimmering hand.
[UE 103] The twin cities of Holdrick and Altannes are founded. Altannes named for its sloping hill and countrysides decorated with Alta Flowers. Holdrick names so for the famed engineer and forign diplomat Rousimar Holdrick. Rousimar mastered both of his crafts, designing the plans for both cities himself and securing the materials to build such masterpieces through crafty negotiaons with the dwarves and gnomes. Granted they may never trade with humans again...but after they are done honoring their contracts they may not need to.
[UE 143] Kalan Tanalier, a Drow Elf druid of some renown has fashioned a city to rival all others. It exists as a part of the Dragla Forest. Kalan broke with the teaching of the Elven king in Ossirion. Despite the splintering from the Elven capital Kalan still wished to keep lines of communication with the High Elf royalty. His Pagoda was built to serve as both a trading post as well as a location for further diplomatic debate. The pagoda, surrounded by waterfalls and rivers giving life to vibrant and lush flora also acts as we welcoming gateway to some who were birthed of this land and a poignant warning to those whose loyalty is based in the sky or of fire. The humans have been exceedingly supportive of the Drow, providing resources for the expansion of Tanalier. This created further divisions within the Elvish people who have thus far remained secluded and unified. The king, quoted as lamenting "Humans; they call themselves diplomats, but are nothing more than spies, swindlers, and thieves. The Gnomes of the east and the Dwarves of the north have warned the Elven people of the humans treachery but this lesson, first hand, shall never be forgotten."
[UE 150] The founding of the second dwarven city Viggrom was formed at the base of a permafrost glacier. The Dwarves continued to profit from weapons and despite many skirmishes with the Elves and Gnomes, they remained mostly peaceful arms dealers for the entire region. Their architecture was rough and rugged resembling the mountains, and cold desolate lands that they clung to for safety. This city became a religious mecca for the followers of the God of Fire while Ignis was said to have revealed himself in the very flame in the temple of the last hearth to a monk who sacrifices himself to the flame. The monk, Fe'Are Copperbeard, a descendant of Usor is said to have ascended to the ethereal plane as a servant of Ignis. His soul is rumored to still reside in the flame and only present itself to the truly worthy.
[UE 199] Today Valkur was said to have been present, and in his presence, Alttanes was birthed into this world.
"[UE 271] The Kherek-Nor archipelago west of Espen's continent has been the rumored homeland of the Kherek-Nor people or as the citizens of Espen know them; Goblinoids. Both hobgoblins and goblins have made the island chain their homes and have kept their existence a relative secret for some time. On the rare encounters with "mainlanders" as the Goblins call them, Goblins had a propensity to attack first and ask questions later, their larger counterparts, hobgoblins, were simply seen as cunning brutes who would just as soon ambush a caravan than look at it. As a tribal people, the inhabitants of the island chain spent most of their time raiding other villages and settling into tribal chiefdoms. It was not until a charismatic leader, a goblin by the name of Larsone E. Hatchetwink managed to unite the goblin people across the archipelago that their uprising truly began. L.E. Hatchetwink had seen the downfall of the Genasi people and he knew that without a stronghold for his people, they could never thrive in Espen. Thus began the Goblin migration to the mainland began. L.E. Hatchetwink marched thousands of Goblins from the archipelago to the western coast of Espen. Establishing a town that was fast-growing and innovative. Christening the town in his own name and banner as the Free Goblin Territory of Hatchetwink. To ensure the full history of Hatchetwink was never lost in the same fashion as that of Beryl and Flux, Larcone commissioned the Old World Archive, a chronicler of Goblin, Hobgoblin, Tabaxi, and Genasi history. Their focus on chronicled history made Hatchetwink the premiere producer of scrolls in Espen."
[UE 222] Twiddlewyren, a fortress of a city, established on the Salt Cliffs of Po drew a clear line of delineation between dwarvish and gnomish territories. In response to the Gnomes expanding their empire further north, the dwarves, set up a series of smaller villages to the north to act as an early warning system against any other possible gnomish aggression or further expansion. Gnomes in this city tended to be a bit more wary of dwarven presences as they sat on the very frontier to the north. However, the location of their stronghold, the presence of the Alibaster sea to northwest and gnomish nautical might made Twiddlewyren a relatively unreachable location. The fortress itself sat at the edge of a cliff raised high above the surrounding land, having been forced to look up at other species for their entire existence, many suspect the Brocc Garnetfoot aimed to make an explicit expression of Gnomish superiority as the seat of power within Twiddlewyren, sat at the highest point in the city forcing all who came to bargain onto literal low ground.
The Blackguard Orc Security Company has secured a contract to act as the primary security of Mithrigal [UE 239], Evolir [UE 248], and Nattan Mal [UE 688]. The Blackguards were a roaming band of mercenaries from the Orc Vein Trench at the center of the Broken Lands. Their leader Gridis Sanlow sought to secure their people a place in the world aside from a gang of brutes hired to kill. Though this was admittedly not much of a promotion, they were guaranteed barracks within the cities, consistent meals, and their children were allowed to hold positions of influence within those respective cultures. Though the Genasi never blamed the Orcs specifically for their homeland's capture, the Orcs did play a pivotal role in preventing successful uprisings during the first and second Genasi Rebellions. Due to the Gnomes strong anti-Orc position, the Orcs eventually had to work with both Tabaxi and Genasi to secure more Everore for weapons, and though it is tenuous, the relationship between Orc and Genasi has consistently improved through the years.
[UE 239] At dawn 200 trebuchets brought the message of Ignis to the homeland of the Genasi. Launching a constant barrage of molten rock and fire onto the unsuspecting city, many of its inhabitants fled for Vitalinas. Those that remained took up arms however few were skilled with weapons of combat. The dwarves sacked the city, nearly reducing it to ash in the process. Flux was ripped from the Genasi, the heart of their cultural power vanished nearly overnight as the Dwarves claimed it for themselves. The First Genasi Rebellions rage on for years. Insurrectionist warfare by Fire Genasi who were brought from the City of Beryl to assist in recapturing Flux for their people. The fire Genasi tormented the city for years until from the very fire they brought, the Immolates were born. A group of warriors and bards whose very words could ignite and destroy any who challenged them. After nearly 88 years of rebellion, the First Genasi Rebellions were finally crushed, splintering their people between Beryl and Vitalinas. See Also: Word of the Enkendled
[UE 248] The City of Beryl continued to host the Solstice Summits at the behest of other leaders. The elves especially had taken to making great strides in diplomacy during these summits. There had been talks of the establishment of an Elven kingdom in Espen but despite their strides, the elves have neither raw materials nor the manpower to construct a city of sufficient size to merit their people the title of kingdom. No one knows whether it was the animosity growing between the Genasi and Elves or the disappearance of an Elven official in the City of Beryl, but following the summits, the entirety of the Elven army descended on Beryl and days later christened their ransacked city after their newly appointed queen Iona Evolir; daughter of Ashenvale.
[UE 264] The presence of Twiddlewyren to the south spurred the dwarves to begin setting up encampments on the northern coast of Alibaster Bay. The north coast, which was once a quaint collection of Tabaxi fishing villages was transformed into a series of fortified Dwarven encampments meant as a clear signal to the gnomish people that further advancement into the north would no longer be acceptable. In response, the gnomish fleet setup a blockade around the entire northern coast of the bay. The blockade prevented dwarven travelers from trade in the south effectively cutting off the Dwarves access to textiles, parchment and most importantly Everore. Tensions remained high for years until the Steamturn Armistice was signed [in UE 293] halting dwarven expansion into the south and gnomish expansion further north. However the group most highly impacted by the Steamturn Armistice were the Tabaxi, the armistice required the dwarves abandoned each encampment across the bay leaving behind heavily fortified positions with sustainable infrastructure. Combined with an already robust fishing community the area became known as Clawful Lagoon, a region rife for expansion and capable of doing so by taxing gnomish Everore from the south and dwarven leatherworks from the north.
As the Goblins from the Westerly Isles began to flourish in their fledgling city of Hatchetwink, word was received from Elven and Gnomish scouts that their numbers were fast multiplying and would soon be on par with their respective capital cities. In a rare moment of military partnership, Elven and Gnomish forces were sent to lay siege to Hatchetwink and push the Goblins back to their Isles. However, Elven and Gnomish leadership grossly underestimated the Goblin's military prowess, suffering a massive defeat and loss of most of their forces. Referred to by Gnomish and Elvish people as a "Goblin Uprising" in which an intrusive force carved land from the heart of Espen and claimed it for themselves, the Goblin refer to this as the Battle of Fundament. Fundament, the small mining village just outside of Hatchetwink from which the Goblin ambush was planned now stands as both a monument and warning to any who would encroach upon Goblin territory again.
[UE 303] The elvish people pushed further north from Ossirion. Bringing their teachings of the God of the Land as well as their high elf traditions of oppulence and naturalism. King Vizax, becoming more obsessed with a unified cultural front within all Elven lands declared Kalan and all residents of Tanalier under the rule of the High Elves. The news was delivered to Kalan via the king's personal guard of Ashen Savages. Having struck a deal with the Goblins of Hatchetwink offering them both gold and Everore in exchange for weapons and an army of hobgoblins to the north, King Vizax imposed martial law on Tanalier, forcing its namesake and his followers from their homeland. Seeing opportunity, the humans sent the entire 12 batallion of Golden Vipers to stand as a blockade between Kalan's retreating forces and those of King Vizax. The goblins, whose true loyalty lie with the gold and the status that came with human trade abandoned the rear flank leaving the Elven army exposed. Seeing no victory in an all out war with humans King Vizax ordered his army in Ossirion to march north while the Ashen Savages held their position. The result was a standoff, human and Drow sandwiched between two hostile forces, with neither side willing to risk open war. The humans, being the diplomats that they were, created the drow elf compact. An agreed upon stretch of land and resources that would comprise the Drow Elf territory. Kalan's forces were required to pay tribute to pass through, which rarely occured as the tribute was 1000 GP per soldier and 250 GP per civilian. Effectively the humans had succeeded in cutting the Elvish kingdom in two, weakening the Elven position across all of Espen. The most unforutnate outcome of this compact was the small Genasi town of Tempest. The town was comprised mostly of earth Genasi who, themselves found a kinship with the high elves and the leadership of King Vizax. As a part of the Compact, the drow forced the genasi to relocate to Ossirion, where they were welcomed by the King, but had lost their village in the process. King Vizax after signing the Drow Elf Compact: "To elven lands, the humans have brought dissension and from elven lands they have taken land of their own with the assistance of the Drow. Now it is the human seal required for passage through lands elves once freely called our own. The elven people must suffer this insult today, but one day we shall reclaim them both, the land and the drow."
[UE 303] Twinnam is founded. A glimmering city by the sea at the Cliffs of Stran'gar, magnificent towers jutting into the sky. The city is built around the Coat & Arms Library. A cultural marvel for the humans who have this far in their species history been overly concerned with diplomacy and espionage. The Coat & Arms houses the genological knowledge of all of Espen's greatest families. Also an ever growing travel destination, their hospitality sector now boasts not only the largest but the most impressive lodging options for adventurers. Infrastructure and navigation are also made easy as canals cut through the city providing easy access to new trade routes via ports.
[UE 337] Vallia Siora Valzeiros, a daughter of Ashenvale has gone missing. The Daughters of Ashenvale is said to be the direct descendants of Ashenvale, the Goddess of the Land. Known to possess a keen connection to both the Elvish land and Elvish people, the daughters of Ashenvale are revered and often fulfill their calling as high priestesses at some time throughout their nearly 1000 year lifespan. The forests are barren and the field yields no fruit. Our people search for her but there has been a growing division the Drow Elves rumble with dissent for our failings to protect Vallia. They curse the land refusing what little bounty it provides. Opting to seclude themselves from Ashenvale in the forest of adumbration. Vowing to hunt down Vallia's captors and not resting until they have."
[UE 343] The Genasi Conclave, known as the Elementarians order a full-scale retreat from all mainland territories. This took place through the 5 remaining monastic orders including: The Rainbow Monastery (All Genasi) The Red Lotus (Fire) Deep Blue (Water and Air) Terra Firma (Earth and Fire) Meditative Stone (Earth and Air) Message Reads - Seek refuge on Vitanya. Authorization of minimal monastery presence granted. All non-essential personnel are authorized for immediate world well travel to the island. Vitanya, the name is said to be from before history meaning 'an ascended people' The tribe of Genasi settled there renounced all religions, save for the ones that granted them a land of their own, renaming the land Vialinas 'a free people'. The monasteries would remain secure but dormant for over 1000 years as the Genasi withdrew to their homeland.
[UE 416] A splinter group of Forest Gnomes has headed west, led by Tawny Fizzlebreach. Once thought to be next in line for the Gnome Council, Tawny had no intentions of serving in a Gnomish administration her father served in. As an outspoken critic of the Steamturn Armistice, Tawny had long held that gnomish people should move north. While many younger Gnomes echoed this sentiment, her candid objections were seen as disruptive to the goals of the Gnome Council An explorer by nature, Tawny was given a scientific team and tasked with discovering what lies beyond the Oruo Mountains to the west. The journey lasted two months as her team mapped out a route through Tabaxi and dwarvish lands. While very few explorers cross the Oruo Mountains, the Gnomes' size and nimbleness was perfect for navigating the narrow cliffs and passages. The west side of the Oruo Mountains was breathtaking. Lush swamps and wetlands produced more diverse flora than the gnomish people had ever seen. Tawny set to work drafting plans for a sprawling metropolis. A devout Irradeascent, Tawny spoke of a voice guiding her along the journey. Her stamina was buoyed by the guidance the voice provided. The few who witnessed the entire journey recounted the experience as she appeared to be shrouded in mist through most of it. The mist guiding her steps through treacherous lands. As her feet touch the western coast the mist dispelled into the ocean and became the very site of the Mistbound Temple.
[UE 418] TREACHERY! A team of Dwarven miners and researchers discovered the bile left by the Genasi. The Flux Falls, the source of freshwater for Mithrigal has been poisoned at its source deep in the mountains. The researchers are unsure how long this has been occurring as the Hogweed and Wolfsbane, wrapped in hundred-pound bushels were found soaking in the source weighed down by Dwarven weapons. Clearly left as a message sent to the Dwarven people. The estimates are that the source had been poisoned for at least a year and will take another 5 to purify. Gerras Hardforge the dwarven viceroy of security estimated that 85% of the population has been affected. Clerics and scholars from Vil'Kries state that symptoms include temporary blindness, light sensitivity, and the development of callouses around the body that harden over time. Gerras Hardforge: "This was the last desperate attempt of a treacherous people, in an attempt to harm the dwarven people. The best researchers are now focused on providing a cure." *An unexpected outcome from this was of course the presence of nearly 300 gnomish emissaries who had been brought in as part of a cultural exchange initiative over the last month. While many researchers believe the Dwarves more stout physiology may make some of the effects of the poisoned water reversible, there is no such hope for the gnomes who were exposed who already show far more severe symptoms.
[UE 457] The city of Thog was founded on an island chain to the northeast of Espen proper. Meant to provide an absolute stronghold that would specialize in naval crafts, and act as a naval college for the Dwarven people. The goal was naval superiority in the north a forward position on the eastern isles that would dissuade settlement by any other races. However, the founding of the city ended in tragedy as the City of Thog and all its inhabitants were slaughtered by the then-unknown but massively overpowering Yeti presence on the Isles. Since the massacre, few have ventured back to what is now called Yeti Pointe.
While the Tabaxi claim no hostilities were intended, intentions hardly mattered at this point. An old-world artifact was discovered off the coast of Twiddlewyren. While the discovery of an artifact in foreign lands is a matter that by law should have been handed over to the Tribal Chief to negotiate its recovery, a young Tabaxi sea captain Timmis Maquart made a judgment call. Located at the bottom of the bay just outside Twiddlewyren, the captain decided the area was too high traffic to wait for an official ruling to secure its recovery, as pirate ships sailed these waters regularly. This decision proved to be in error. During the recovery, the artifact was mistakenly activated, sending shockwaves of unknown old-world magic rippling through the sea. The unknown enchantment had a disastrous effect on all spells currently active in the area, the most powerful of which kept the Brassbell Chapel, a seat of ancient power along magical leylines perched just above the waves. The tower had been balanced securely for more than 200 years using the Gnomes' deft understanding of tides, engineering, and enchantments. As the magic wained, what many believed to be a three-story building was revealed to be an 844-foot tower and a famed archive that up until that time only the Gnome Council was aware of. What occurred next is a matter of some debate among historians. The Gnomes, claiming that the Tabaxi had intentionally sabotaged their lands say that a team of Tabaxi infiltrators stormed Brassbell Tower attempting to finish their mission of destroying this culturally, historically, and religiously significant site. The Tabaxi who to their credit, claimed their action was justified as the Gnomes were using old-world spells to obscure the tower, claim that upon its discovery, the Gnomes sunk the tower, sending it plummeting into the sea floor. Sealing their secrets in the saltwater. What ensued was a 10 year series of skirmishes in the waters between Evergreen Deep and Twiddlewyren that saw the sinking of 92 ships and multiple instances of sabatoge.
General Rapleth Nicklepenny became the stuff of Gnomish legend when the Deep Gnomes from the mountains to the east attempted to lay siege to Fizzlebreach as the first step to overthrowing the Gnomish Council. Seeing the import of holding the city, and preventing the Gnomish population from becoming rife with inter-conflict, General Nicklepenny sacrificed most of the city's territory choosing instead to garrison most of the city's population and remaining defenses into the armory. From that defensive position, he held off multiple waves of deep gnome attacks. For 4 weeks, he commanded the ragtag group of poorly trained civilians and retired military veterans, suffering only minor losses while inflicting several losses on their enemy. Using what became known as the Nicklepenny maneuver waves of shielded gnomes executed the simple strategy of withstanding brutal ranged and melee attacks through interlocking shields, counterattacking through well timed and narrowly opened windows, and retreating deep into the armory which itself was built to withstand the combined might of the gnomish council itself. As reinforcements arrived they were surprised to find a worn-down Deep Gnome encampment that was on the verge of surrender. Nicklepenny himself led most of the counteroffensive and suffered grievous injury. Buried deep within the armory his last words were quoted as "If our enemy should have this city, first they shall have my spear." Those same words are now etched above the famous archway that leads to the armory.
[UE 522] The rebellion has been reborn at the behest of the sacred order of Elementarians. To quell the uprising the Elven King enlists the assistance of a band of mercenary orcs and goblins to stand guard around the perimeter of Evolir as such races had not been deemed fit to enter the city. As the Genasi rebellion carried on into it 7th year, the goblins abandoned their posts, feeling the crush of a war of attrition, the Orcs used their position as leverage to not only be allowed into the city but become the city's sole protectors. Human drafted the contract that extended for 1500 years obligating the orcs to remain as protectors. Ultimately the orcs' numbers proved too lethal and the Genasi retreated to the safe harbor of Vitalinas.
[UE562] A joint exploration force (JEF)of elves and humans move to the unexplored southeast region of Espen. Such joint exploration was rare as both the humans and elves were still looking to expand their territories and spheres of influence. Lahad (Gnome) and Arlson (Human) were the leaders JEF and ventured deep into the Barren Lands in search of a fabled oasis. The arid desert greeted them for miles as they trek through dunes and hills of dust. On the 89th day of their journey they were ambushed. Their camp set upon at night. Their enemy was unknown, what was known for sure was that only one survivor of the original JEF made it out alive. In response, the Gnome and Humans sent the 3rd legion to investigate and handle whatever aggressive force was in the area. This aggressive position set off a series of skirmishes on the edge of human territory that not hidden city but their ferocity in battle. 500 Bugbears turned back a force of over 3000 in the 3rd legion. In response to this aggression, the Bugbears responded with an expansion of their own. Developing land throughout the entire peninsula and establishing fortifications to protect their lands. Known as the Bugbear Push, few other species venture within 10 miles of what is now known as the Bugbear Reach.
[UE 639] A missionary group Marked Zealots monks sat atop Mount Vermire, just outside of Everhold City. They are said to have sat atop the mount for more than a month entreating Valkur to bless them with divine sight. Their discussions are said to range from the history of Espen to the science of necromancy to the location of Yonder. Between their sparkling conversation, it is said that they only prayed and slept. Legend states that after 48 days, Valkur parted the heavens and walked among the monks. Their eyes averted in deference to him, the monks entreated Valkur to bless them. Impressed by the monks devotion to him, Valkur pulled the clouds from the sky and stars from the heavens and erected a temple in their honor. No one is sure if what happened next was caused by awe or curiosity but the monks looked up Valkur's splendor and in that instance were rendered blind. The knowledge they gains from their time with Valkur has made these monks sages among the human faithful. Most remain atop the mount at the Blind Temple; blessed with knowledge and cursed with blindness. However, some, who have risen beyond and are said to possess superhuman faith are said to have stepped into the clouds with Valkur himself and been taken into the city of the gods.
[UE 684] The most wanted man in Espen is Ablis Nattan. A goblin of some renown, and a notorious bad luck streak flees from Hatchetwink after defaulting on a debt. When asked about the amount owed Ablis described the total as: "Insubstantial." Though his lenders did not classify his 23,585 GP debt he'd racked up on a monumentally run of Crown and Anchor at Haven. At the time, the rule enforced in Goblin territories gave any individual 24 hours to settle their debts. Ablis, upon arriving home spent that 24 hours packing his things and gathering his 34 children and 9 wives. With what little gold he had remaining he hired a caravan to escort them from Hatchetwinks. They traveled for weeks, constantly being set upon by those tasked with returning him to Hatchetwinks to work off his debt. Their travel landed them in the marsh swamp known at the time as Boggsville, a rather undesirable land that was a balmy swamp in the winter and a frigid tundra in the winter. It was just barely hospitable but it did provide one thing. Flat, unobstructed views for miles just the kind of place a goblin could hide and always have advanced warning if someone was coming. Here Ablis and his family established the Free Goblin Territories of Nattan Mal. *Ablis and his family remain persona non grata in Hatchetwinks to this day. **The Nattan's still owe 10602 GP to the Haven Casino in Hatchetwinks.
[UE 701] As the human influence grows, so too does their wealth. However, an ever-pressing concern in human cities was the security of their newly acquired wealth. From UE 640-UE 694 over 40,000 GP were stolen from vaults across the human territory. When asked why he targeted human vaults, a gnome rogue responded "that's where the gold is." As a means of securing such wealth against outside influence or loss, the Goblins and Humans forge an economic alliance. The Goblins, having seen the power the humans wield through trade and commerce during the negotiations of the Drow Elf Compact (Circa UE 303) were eager to forge a partnership within human diplomacy. This opportunity presented itself during the Gilded Summit, a meeting in Pra'Shad of held once every 5 years by the richest individuals in Espen. The money profits made through this event serve to fund the town nearly entirely until the next summit, allowing the residents to live nearly carefree lives. The summit is presided over by the Human Intelligence Quarter and security is handled by Hobgoblin at Arms, a security company funded by the humans. In UE 701, Atticus Poundstone a human investor from the Gilded Reserve and Argent Snox, a co-owner of the Haven Casino in Hatchetwinks discovered a remedy for the humans' unsecured gold stores. Together they founded the Bank of Espen. The HQ of the Bank of Espen is built as a shining tower in Altannes its secrets only known to Argent and Atticus. The Bank's presence quickly spread across Espen due to the security it could offer. In no time, anywhere that was considered anywhere a Bank of Espen. No one knows how the Goblins gained such a position inside the bank but they have secured the untold fortunes of humans ever since.
The sacking of Flux and the subsequent Genasi Rebellions nearly destroyed the city. With barely time to recover from its fall the Genasi demanded repayment in blood in the first rebellions and struck at the heart of Dwarvish rule with the second. Following the decimation of the second rebellions, the new Dwarven King Haddock Bloodborn considered abandoning the city altogether in favor of founding a city that wasn't currently in ruins. However, the kings of Viggrom and Nin overruled the Haddock, the seniority of Kings is not to be questioned. So faced with the imperative to rebuild Haddock commissioned every trader, blacksmith, mason to bring in a constant stream of supplies for the rebuild. Of course, this commission wasn't exactly voluntary. Tradesmen who refused the commission were jailed, those who demanded better prices were stripped of their titles, and those who rebelled simply disappeared. The commissions themselves arrived as red scrolls, the seal of the Vulcanites stamped upon it. Seeing such a scroll at your door meant dire consequences for some and long caravans for others. But after a generation, no one dared refuse a commission. As kings changed, so did the policy of the commission, in more recent memory the commissions have been used less and less. Though they have fallen from favor, their presence still looms large over the city will all knowing the power of the red scrolls and the cost of refusing a commission.
[UE 706] The increased wealth in and around the human cities created a great deal of innovation. That innovation bore fruit in the form of new products, consumables, and crafts; ultimately leading to an increase in commerce and trade that threatened to quite literally break the vaults of the Banks of Espen. While the official stance of every Human High Table delegate was that "the undertaking of philanthropic works for the benefit of all Espen is second nature to humans, we need not be asked to serve those with whom our fates are tied." A rather loquacious restatement of the human motto: For the people, for the realm. The philanthropic work they spoke of was the construction of over 80,000 miles of road constructed that reached from the beaches of Twinnam to the frozen hills of Nin. Using only 8% of the Guilded Reserves funds was enough to accomplish this feat in under 50 years. Concluding with the construction of the Golden Road, so named for its gold bricks used as mile markers along the path. While there were initially concerns that the bricks would be stolen and end up costing the reserve substantial sums in upkeep, a decree was passed in each human city that any individual found with one of the golden bricks would be put to death. Historical roads of relevance:
History can be altered by the simplest of things. An unknown scribes apprentice, absentmindedly leaving the doors of the Tahoe Archive in Pra'Shad unlocked could very well be the inciting incident. Though no one knows, many suspect the Gnomes' unexpected access to information found in those scrolls revealed the humans' role in the Bugbear Push and all but revealed their covert operations that cost the Gnomes their plans for increased expansion in the south. A decade-long war of information evolved into increasingly less covert operations and a proxy war that brought in both the Bugbear Legion (Human Supported) and Orc Tribes (Gnome Supported). The proxy war came to a head in the village of Drywater in the flatlands between of Everhold City and Spritzlewerks. An ambush of Human sentries guarding the village ordered by First Lieutenant Tantix Dappletwist began what would become the Dappletwist Offensive; a 5 year long siege on the City of Holdrick. Starting the war as a Lieutenant, Tantix Dappletwist rose to the rank of General and led his ultimately failed assault on Pitchfork Ridge as a last ditch effort to break the Human stronghold. His final words are quoted as "No Gnome comes to such a barren and desolate land to live, Foreward Forever!" Tantix died, and with him, his offensive. From his sacrifice was birthed a renewed call for stronger military tradition within in the Gnomish culture and a new name for the city of the victory. The City of Holdrick, nearly destroyed by the 5 year onslaught was rebuilt and rechristened Everhold, the unreachable City.
[UE 717] Oni Boltbit was the last living heir of the Boltbit royal family. Their work with the Hizzenboot family and the Fizzlebreach Royal Family is well documented and a large reason the Gnomish people have been as successful as they are currently. As a Gnomish philanthropist with no heir, Oni willed his property to the city of Fizzlebreach upon his passing. The Kolbod Dispatch has been covering the news of his untimely demise extensively. The lingering issue has been that due to the protective magicks he left active on his estate at the time of his death, no one has been able to find his body. In his later years, Oni had become quite paranoid and cast spells over every inch of the estate to protect him from intruders and those who might steal his family's heirlooms. The Kobold Dispatch says that the Gnomish Council is offering a 500 GP reward for anyone who can find his body to ensure a proper burial. There was a line out of the estate for nearly a week with no sign of Oni Boltbit and eventually, nearly everyone concluded the task impossible, though the reward is still available for any brave enough to enter the Boltbit Estate.
[UE 731] Seeing the damage that the Drow Elf Compat did to the Elvish people a group of Elders were determined not to let that happen again. Gathering representatives from the High Elves, Wood Elves, Deep Elves and Moon Elves a tribunal was formed, and from that tribunal 5 High Priests were selected to tend to any disparate needs of the Elvish people and to prevent any one group of elves from splintering ever again. To enforce the will of the High Priests and Priestesses, the tribunal, using a ritualistic form of magic, a special strain of Kamala Root, and a dangerous form of alchemy; endowed a select few into the Ashen Savages. The savages possessed the best traits of the elven people and were granted increased endurance, strength, and awareness. However, most exist on the cusp of a feral state. Savages are also given broad license in Elvish territory to handle criminals and heretics with a strong hand. Many find it best to avoid them at all costs as altercations with Ashen Savages frequently prove fatal.
[UE 779] The Kobolds had spent most of their existence in roles of subservience, far too small a population to claim a city for themselves, they mostly occupied smaller villages throughout Espen as they had no desire for the hustle and bustle of city life. They traditionally cling to warmer climates and coastal villages. Their lack of a centralized government to represent their interests in Espen had led to their relegation to roles of subservience. Vix Prasher sought to change that. Educated at the College in the Clouds, Vix was a wandering soul for most of his young life. He'd journeyed as far north as Viggrom and even ventured into Bugbear reach. Along the way, he studied at the Bugbear War College TakTix, and the Tabaxi Bardic College. By his 40th birthday, he'd seen more of Espen than anyone else on the continent. His only regret was the inability to share these experiences with the rest of the world. It wasn't until he met Stumpmold Fleamire, a high-ranking member of the Bank of Espen that he had an epiphany of just how to share his experiences and travels with all of Espen. While Stumpmold put up the initial funding, the Kobold Dispatch became an immediate success all over Espen as nearly every city had one within a decade of its inauguration as the primary news source in Espen. The expansion of the Kobold Dispatch also served the Kobold population as well as now they were no longer seen as unsophisticated field hands but instead purveyors of information and a vital part of Espen. Since the printing of their first scrollpaper, the Kobold Dispatch has consistently delivered the news for over 1000 years (and counting).
[UE 838] A Tabaxi of unknown name or origin carves a swath of destruction through gnomish, human and dwarvish settlements east of Nin. He felled 6 cities, 2 fortresses and the broke the Gnomish 5th Phalanx in only 2 days. His fighting prowess unified the Tabaxi people, his sword leveled entire villages; banished governors and peasants alike to another plane existance, none of which were seen or heard from again. The sword, known to the Tabaxi as the Rohan Blade, known to the Dwarves as the Sword of Oblivion and known to the humans as Kingsbane was said to be capable of razing civilizations to nothing, or building civilizations from a single speck of sand. The declares himself son of the ascended, herald of Rohan and renames what had then been the Ika Isles as the Tabaxi Commonwealth of Evergreen Deep. His display of power is enough to spur a conclave between the humans, gnomes and dwarves. The Freepeoples Conclave [UE 838-UE 855] was a temporary ceasefire until the tabaxi threat could be assessed. In the end it was deemed most prudent to leave Evergreen Deep in their control, and seeking no further quarrel, the tabaxi's retreated to their new homeland and were rarely seen outside of it for 200 years. The sword itself hasnt been seen since the Tabaxi retreated into Evergreen Deep. Their lands deemed sovergin in the Freepeople's Accords resulting from the Conclave. The only humans, dwarves or Elves that have set foot on Evergreen Deep since that day were escorted by a Tabaxi or invited by a tribal chief.
[UE 879] The Ashen Lightouse shines bright for the first time. A product of Elven design and Gnomish magic, and the place where supposedly Mazzu and Ashenvale swore an oath of love to each other forever. The love Ashenvale and Mazzu shared brought forth a new race, the Sea Elves, a gift to the Elvish people. The Sea Elves of Tanalier quickly joined the Elvish Union, an act that the Drow saw as the final insult to Ashenvale. Their inclusion into the Union only served to further cement the Drow more firmly in the notion of an independent Drow Nation. The Sea Elves began construction on an aquatic village just off the coast of Tanalier, making the target of many Drow guerilla attacks over the years. Recognizing the importance of their joint bond for the land and sea of Espen the people of Tanalier built a lighthouse that could be seen for hundreds of miles. The magics protecting the lighthouse are supposedly designed to never go out, as its flame is said to be powered by the eternal love Mazzu between Ashenvale.
[UE 891] The violent exchange has lasted for years. As dwarves, elves and gnomes engage in skirmishes in the grasslands outside the town of Pra'Shad. The battle of Dornsloe has been costly for nearly all sides...except the humans. Though it was unknown at the time, three human diplomats; Paxtil Loki, Anansi Aphid, and ~REDACTED~ had set a series of unfortunate events in motion that led to the Battle of Dornsloe The three diplomats, seeing the power and influence of humans for what it could be as opposed to what it was, formed a fraternal order. The order itself was originally intended to ensure human power throughout all of Espen at all costs. Its membership expanded so rapidly that the diplomacy role was quickly abandoned in favor of a more profitable model. The result was a clandestine organization of highly skilled thieves and assassins whose services could be purchased by anyone, for anything from humanitarian efforts to royal family assassinations. This original band of diplomats were known to be part of the Human Intelligence Quarter (HIQ) in Twinnam but their success took them far beyond the bureaucratic machinations of the HIQ and the organization relocated to the far less discerning Alltannes and assumed the name Rogue State.
[UE 894] On the north end of Twiddlewyren in an abandoned armory, two friends sat having drinks on a crisp fall evening. Hormin Springbob IV an artificer who found himself out of work given an influx of Tabaxi into the city, and his good friend Mz Mina Leadbrew a dwarven engineer who fled dwarven territory in protest of the war. Their conversation was surprisingly robust as both found in the other the kindred spirit of innovation. They spent the next month sharing designs and ideas for weapons, tools, city plans, and various other improvements to the world around them. Despite their respecitve ingenuousness they remained without work with their funds slowly dwindling. Hormin, with his last 500 GP purchased a small plot of land on the north end of the city, and began tinkering. They were quite a pair, and working together they pushed the bounds of weaponcraft and design. It wasn't long before blacksmiths from all over Espen were venturing to see these stange new "gadget" crafted at Springbob's Gadget Emporium As their popularity grew, so did the space they operated out of. Soon they opened a massive workshop for engineers, scientists, and experimental weaponeers to gather and test or sell their wares. It became the premier location in Espen for strange items. The problem is that many of these weapons are still rather untested and have been known to have rather dire consequences to inexperienced users. The most notable of these situations was an experimental weapon that opened a pocket dimension transporting an entire square mile of Twiddlewyren the neighborhood known as Dawnsmead...somewhere? No one has been able to identify what happened to those residents. The issue was reported in the Kobold Dispatch and incited many calls for the closing of Springbobs Gadget Emporium, and while traffic slowed for a time, the overall curiosity of Gnomes is not to be underestimated.
[UE 913] Tishlynn Stoutboot, a sage who had studied at The Great Northern Library discovered The Frozen Scrolls of Usor. Due to the conditions of the scrolls they need to be kept at -10° to remain ledigible. They are kept at the Ice House in Yitreal, a small inn built into the side of a glacier that remains permafrost year around. The scrolls have been passed down to 3 different scholar/caretakers. Each studies them as frequently as possible as the average 22 days of natural sunlight allow. The delicate nature of the scrolls means brining a torch into the Ice House would cause irreparable damage, leaving natural light the only functional option to deciphering the scrolls. Following Tishlynn Stoutboot's study, the scrolls were passed onto Reyndielle Flinthandle, and then Murrus Boldfinger and currently reside in the care of Redgrin Wildheart. After all of the studying done over the last 600 years a few things have been deciphered from the old text in the scrolls:
In [UE 550] the Ardent Winery opened its doors and began crafting mediocre wines for local elves under the tutelage of Rolim Qinhorn. By [UE 716] The Ardent Vinery's finest vintage of Elderberry Mead was offered for auction at Hatcetwinks and went for 5817 GP. After their initial offering was such a success, they began shipping Elvish wine via the R.R. Nightmoon and R.R. Mosslight all over Espen. The R.R. Mosslight was attacked by a Genasi Caravel on its maiden voyage and never made it to Nin. Its stores are believed lost to the sea at great cost to the Ardent Winery as it was said to carry 4 barrels of 300-year-old Silentberry Mead. The estimated cost of each barrel was 1000 GP. An armistice was declared between Elven and Genasi Navies. In exchange for safe passage, the Elven Navy paid a tariff through the straits of hellfire off the eastern coasts of Vitalinas.
[UE 1073] Hanvaul Brühousen, a legendary Dwarvish general is set to retire to his estate just outside of Pra'Shad. In his honor, the Dwarvish military officials have declared this day for the Brühousen Tournament of Champions. In an arena originally converted from a prisoner's camp, the games are set to begin at dawn. By dusk nearly 300 combatants had been widdled down to the remaining 4. A true clash of titan as a Human Paladin Forden, a Dwarven Barbarian Ibsu, a Tabaxi Monk Dacheck and what one observer describes as the world's craftiest Kobold Askew battled well into the night. In the end, the Kobold struck the winning blow, beheading the human with a precise strike. Hanvaul Brühousen was so impressed that instead of retiring to his estate, he chose to remain in Mithrigal, purchasing a large plot of land in the center of the city and building a small village within the city for the champion of the games. Askew and Hanvaul remained close friends and attended the games which were made innagural every year until Hanvaul's death in UE 1388. Since the inaugural games each winner has been given a permanent residence in the Champions Village and a replica Brühousen Warhammer crafted using the same mold as Hanvaul Brühousen's original legendary Warhammer.
[UE 1091] The bi-annual diplomatic symposium was held in the Drow Elf Compact. This marked the first time that members from the Elven Union had journeyed into the Compact since its establishment. Though many regarded the symposium as a chance for diplomats to make inroads into other cultures, establish treaties, and negotiate trade deals; the humans saw this simply as an opportunity to utilize multiple avenues of espionage to undermine the leadership of the Elves, Dwarves and Gnomes. During each session, the humans extracted an exorbitant amount of intelligence and secrets from the other diplomats at the symposium. A contingent of diplomats from Altannes navigated into the Drow Elf and were heading towards the symposium. However, the human delegates never arrived at the bi-annual symposium and their interests went unrepresented. Upon investigation by the HIQ and Elvish Union, it was revealed that the human delegates were ambushed, apparently by a group of Shimmering Hand fanatics. The humans now had standing standing for war but the HIQ withheld a formal declaration, instead utilizing the Kobold Press to spread a smear campaign against the Gnomish Council. As the campaign waged on, rumors began swirling in the region leading to a small group of shimmering hand missionaries being hunted down by a group of Drow Elves and massacred. These actions resulted in the Gnome-Tome Riots, a 12 day riot of human and Elven fronteirsmen ransacking fishing villages along the coast south of Spritzlewerks. Following the riots, tensions were raised across the entire region. The event came to a head in UE 1092 when the 2 Legion of the Human Army marched to the very gates of Spritzlewerks causing a month long standoff. Today, we know this entire chain of events to have been the work of Ajani Aphid, (great-grandson of Primaina Aphid, the founder of the College in the Clouds), newly-appointed head of the Rogue State. This false flag operation served as the Rouge State's official notice of its independence from the Human Intelligence Quarter.
Numic Rubyshield, an Dwarven explorer, whose family once ruled the region between Nattan Mal and Mithrigal set out to find the rubies that once brought her family to prominence and are rumored to be the reason for their ruin. After her expedition in and around the mountains that line the region she returned, mournful, having seen the ruins of her family's keep, and penned the following: Crumbling is not an instant's Act A fundamental pause Dilapidation's cruel processes Are organized Decays — Meant to strike at the very heart of greatness. Ruin is formal — Ignis' work Consecutive and slow — Fail in an instant, no man did Slipping — yet clinging to that which burns — And sears until all that is left is Ash.
[UE 1114] 430 years after its founding Nattan Mal is officially recognized as a free territory. Paying off the balance of their family's debt, Bar-Bar Boggs made the final payment (plus interest) totalling over 89,280 GP. As part of the full recognition, trading tariffs were lifted on products originating from Nattan Mal. This greatly benefited Bar-Bar as his bridge was a prime location for trade. In addition to the lifting of trading tariffs, the now well established Full Sail University began offering scholarships to the other races in exchange for diplomatic clout.
[UE 1173] The wind blew strong across the fields of the battle of Harrenhowl in the Westwind forest just north of Ossirion. The Elves had planned for such an attack for 12 years. However, the Drow, in their desperation utilizing the last of the gold in their reserve paid the Rogue State to infiltrate the Elvish Union during those same 12 year. Amassing a rather sizeable force inside the Elvish Army sympathetic to the cause of the Drow. Of the 8,000 troops the Elvish Union brought to the battle, nearly 1,000 were mercenaries paid by the Drow. Thus, when the Elvish Union attacked a battalion of 4,000 Drow Elves at the Compact line, their flank broke as soon as the Drow gave the signal. Chaos reigned and of the original 7,000 Elvish Union troops, only 112 made it back to Ossirion alive. The dismal failure cost the Elvish Union far more than they bargain as the Drow were now free to expand even further south moving the compact line nearly 200 miles south. Of the 112 that returned tales of being forced to abandon the fallen in the forest spread across Elven lands. The wailing heard by those who retreated is said to be of an eerie and horrifying sort. Supposedly on quiet nights, one can still hear the cries echoing in the Wailing Forest.
Once, many years ago the struggling druidic college extended a fellowship to three eccentric druids. Each of them prodigies in not only druidcraft but other fields as well.
