Ecology
Evolution has strange ways of protecting its most humble creatures. The Boltfrog, of which there are 6 species is nature's more elusive creature to catch. Each species of elusive for different reasons as seen below:
- The Guiledeep Boltfrog - Emits a hallucinogenic pheromone that causes predators to see multiple copies of itself.
- The Bogswine Boltfrog - Has a jumping range that rivals humans chase speeds and can climb.
- The Twin Stripe Boltfrog - Emits sonic waves that disrupt thought.
- The Rosemary Boltfrog - Active camouflage that changes with its environments
- The Netbreaker Boltfrog - As its name implies this frog can breakthrough nets with the corrosive acid it excretes.
But of all these species none is as dangerous as
- The Spiked Boltfrog - Covered in small razor-sharp barbs, the spiked Boltfrog can expel these poison-laced barbs in all directions for up to 50 feet. When struck by one, the effects are immediate as the victim begins to see the most beautiful display of colors. However, that is as good as it gets. First, they are then sent into a mindless rage, attacking anything in sight. Then as the adrenaline subsides (usually 5 minutes) they fall into a deep paralytic sleep. If not awakened with Arcane Salt within a few days they will die.
Taxonomy
Its taxonomy leads most to believe it is harmless and is even occasionally mistaken for the Bogswine Boltfrog as its barbs only show when it intends to attack. However, following an attack its mobility is incredibly limited, and the frog itself is injured by releasing the barbs. This frequently tends not to matter as whatever predator that was attacking it is usually sent into a rage and runs off.
However, if one is captured, harvesting its poison glands is relatively easy. A small incision under its belly will reveal two yellow glands. If kept in a vial the poison lasts up to 1 year.
