The Burning Reformation
A schism within the Church led to violent uprisings, with reformist factions challenging the authority of the High Cleric. The reformists sought a return to Solenara's original doctrine of healing and illumination, opposing the increasingly militaristic and punitive practices of the Church.
Key Events:
- The Heresy of the Ember Faith: A reformist sect that preached against the Inquisition's brutality, gaining followers among peasants and even lesser nobility. They called for the restoration of Saint Aureth’s original teachings.
- The Siege of the Radiant Spire: A bloody battle where the reformists breached the walls of the Church’s most sacred temple, only to be repelled by Solari Templars.
- The Trials of the Unforgiven: Thousands were burned at the stake or condemned to the dungeons of the Ashen Gate. The Inquisition expanded its reach, establishing the practice of public burnings as a tool of fear.
House Carathen allied with the Inquisition, crushed the dissenters, reinforcing the Church’s power and leading to the execution of thousands of heretics. The revised Book of Radiance declared all non-conformity as heresy, cementing the Church's dogmatic nature.
