Veyathan League
The Veyathan League is a confederation of independent merchant republics, city-states, and trade guilds that occupy the northwestern coasts and river valleys beyond the Holy Solarian Empire. Unlike the empire’s rigid feudal hierarchy or the Lunar Covenant’s decentralized tribal structure, the League operates as a collection of self-governed city-states, bound together by commerce, diplomacy, and mutual defense.
The League is not a military power, nor does it seek territorial expansion. Instead, it thrives on trade, innovation, and diplomacy, acting as a crucial economic hub for the Empire and distant foreign markets. Its ports are filled with exotic goods, its banks finance mercenary companies and naval expeditions, and its streets hum with the voices of traders from across Eryndral.
Geography & Climate
- Temperate and maritime, with mild winters and cool, rainy summers that make the land ideal for vineyards, fisheries, and shipbuilding.
- Rolling green hills and coastal cliffs define the landscape, with cities built along deepwater bays and major river deltas.
- The region lacks a strong central government, so it is fractured into multiple competing city-states, each controlling its own nearby farmlands, ports, and trade routes.
Government & Structure
The Veyathan League is not an empire or a kingdom, but a loose alliance of independent city-states. Each city has its own form of rule, but most are governed by merchant princes, councils of guild leaders, or elected doges.
- The Grand Charter – A document signed by all League cities, ensuring mutual trade agreements, shared naval protection, and diplomatic neutrality.
- The League Council – An assembly of representatives from each city, meeting once a decade to discuss trade policies and foreign relations.
- Guilds as Power Centers – Merchant families and guilds often hold more power than nobles, with gold determining influence more than birthright.
Unlike the divine monarchy of Solaria or the spiritual leadership of the Covenant, the League values wealth, commerce, and pragmatism above all else.
Culture & Economy
The Veyathan League is wealthy, cosmopolitan, and highly literate, with a culture shaped by trade, invention, and diplomacy rather than conquest or faith.
- Banking & Trade Hubs – League cities have powerful banks, currency exchanges, and credit houses, allowing long-distance trade without needing to carry vast sums of gold.
- Seafaring & Exploration – The League is home to the best shipwrights, navigators, and cartographers, making it a leader in naval trade and exploration.
- Innovation & Artistry – Without religious restrictions on arcane studies, the League fosters art, engineering, and alchemical advancements that even the Radiant Assembly would envy.
- A Melting Pot – Due to its reliance on trade, foreigners are common, with diplomatic envoys, mercenary companies, and traveling scholars frequently passing through.
League cities are less religiously zealous than Solaria or the Covenant, but they still honour a diverse pantheon, with deities of wealth, trade, and the sea being the most widely worshipped.
Relations with the Empire & the Lunar Covenant
The League avoids entanglement in the crusade, preferring to remain neutral while profiting from trade with both sides.
- With Solaria: The League maintains strong economic ties with the Empire, acting as a major supplier of luxury goods, foreign textiles, and rare spices. However, Solarians see the League’s lack of faith in Solenara as a sign of moral weakness.
- With the Lunar Covenant: While the League does not openly support the Covenant, it does trade medicinal herbs, enchanted textiles, and rare arcane supplies with Lunar enclaves—at a high price.
- With Mercenary Companies: Many League cities fund private armies and sell weapons to both sides, making them quietly complicit in the war without openly taking sides.
The League’s wealth grants it political leverage, allowing it to remain free from Imperial control while subtly shaping trade and diplomacy.
