The Circle of Shadows

Keepers of the Veil, Watchers in the Dark

The Circle of Shadows is the most secretive and enigmatic faction within the Lunar Covenant, devoted to the mysteries of Lunarel, the Veil, and the hidden truths of the world. They are seers, spies, assassins, and scholars, existing in the gray space between reality and the unknown.

The Circle operates from the shadows, working behind the scenes to manipulate fate, uncover lost knowledge, and protect the Covenant from unseen threats. Some whisper that they do not merely serve Lunarel, but seek to uncover the very nature of the gods themselves.

To the Holy Solarian Empire, they are the unseen enemy, a network of heretics and deceivers who threaten the stability of faith and order. To the Lunar Covenant, they are both feared and revered, trusted with secrets that even the highest warlords do not know.

Goals & Purpose

Guardians of the Veil (Keepers of Hidden Knowledge)

  • The Veil is the boundary between the material world and the unseen realms of spirits, lost gods, and forgotten histories.
  • The Circle seeks to understand it, protect it, and prevent it from being torn apart.
  • Some believe the Empire’s obsession with Solsteel and the Church’s purges are unraveling the natural order.

Seekers of Forbidden Truths

  • The Circle hunts for lost texts, ancient artifacts, and hidden prophecies that the Empire has erased from history.
  • They believe that Solenara and Lunarel were once equals, and that the Church has twisted the past to justify its war.
  • Some within the Circle suspect that there is a third force—something beyond even the Sun and Moon—that has shaped history in secret.

Masters of Illusion & Subterfuge

  • Unlike the Crescent Blades, the Circle does not fight wars on battlefields—they fight wars in whispers, deceptions, and dreams.
  • They use illusion magic, shadow-walking, and misinformation to manipulate the Empire’s movements.
  • Many high-ranking nobles and generals have unknowingly followed the Circle’s plans, believing they were acting of their own will.

The War Within the Covenant

  • While most Lunar leaders see the Circle as a necessary tool, some fear their power and secrecy.
  • Some accuse them of keeping too many secrets, suggesting they may have their own hidden agenda beyond the war.
  • There are even whispers that some among the Circle believe the Lunar Covenant itself is misguided—and seek a different path entirely.

Structure

Unlike the formal war councils of the Covenant, the Circle of Shadows is an elusive and decentralized order, organized into cell-like groups, each with different knowledge and purpose.

The Veilborn Council (The Inner Circle)

  • A secretive group of elders, dreamwalkers, and shadow-weavers who guide the Circle’s direction.
  • Their identities are largely unknown, even to other members—they communicate through veiled visions, coded messages, and intermediaries.
  • Some claim that one of them is not entirely mortal, but something older—a spirit or being from beyond the Veil.

The Dream-Walkers (Oracles & Prophets)

  • The most gifted mystics of the Circle, capable of navigating the realm of dreams, seeing glimpses of fate, and communing with lost souls.
  • Their visions are never clear, always layered in riddles—but they have predicted countless Imperial defeats and betrayals before they happened.
  • Some fear that they see too much, and that one day they will glimpse something they cannot unsee.

The Shadowblades (Assassins & Infiltrators)

  • The Circle’s silent enforcers, trained in stealth, deception, and assassination.
  • Unlike common mercenaries, they do not kill for revenge or power—they eliminate those who threaten the balance of the war.
  • Some disappear so completely that even their own allies forget they ever existed.

The Echoes (The Forgotten Agents)

  • Operatives planted deep within the Empire, living as nobles, priests, and soldiers.
  • They send coded messages hidden in sermons, art, or even the patterns of city lights.
  • Many do not even know they serve the Circle, only that when the time comes, they will act.

"Not all truths are meant to be known. Not all paths are meant to be walked. But those who seek, must understand the cost."
