Taikanki Calendar (大環紀)

The Taikanki is the High Elven 60-year cyclical calendar used to mark time in the Daikan'in and all regions under its influence. Every elf receives a Year Name upon initiation into the Kairyō Kōro (Circuit of Honoring Service), drawn from this calendar. It is both a measure of time and a statement of fate.  

Structure

The calendar is based on a segidecimal system (base-60), divided into repeating 60-year cycles. Each year has a fixed name composed of evocative compounds referencing natural forces, omens, emotional states, or celestial patterns. These names are used both in formal identity (e.g., Shōran Makyō) and ritual contexts.  

The first cycle began in 0 FA.

The Tournament of Unity took place in 981 FA, which corresponds to Cycle 17, Year 21: Fūsai (“Wind-Borne Calamity”).

Naming Convention

Each elf is formally referred to by: [Year Name] + [Kairyō-na] Example: Tenkoku Yūha, “Yūha, born in the Year of Celestial Mark”

Historical Note

The current year is 981 FA, which is Cycle 17, Year 21 of the Taikanki: Fūsai (風災) — “Wind-Borne Calamity”   This was also the year of the Tournament of Unity, the pivotal moment when the Ryūshu dominion ended and the Daikan’in rose to supreme authority among the High Elves.
