Shield Surfing
Shield surfing is an incredibly dangerous sport invented by soldiers centuries ago. It is similar to real-world snowboarding, but shields tend to be not as long, so a greater amount of effort needs to be put into keeping balance. Many individual settlements of The Outlands hold tournaments for tricks whilst shield surfing, but only people who couldn't care less about their safety actually do it. The learning curve for shield surfing is very steep (pun intended), so only the really talented or committed can become masters at the sport.
History
It's said that shield surfing was invented by a young boy that tried to escape his abusive father by surfing down a mountain on his soldier father's shield. He slammed into a rock at 55kph, killing him instantly, but the tradition was later picked up by soldiers camping on a not very steep snowy hill who wanted to pass the time somehow, so they began using the leather straps of the shield as supports. This made it a lot less dangerous, but still, it's the most dangerous sport in The Outlands.
Execution
You begin by going to a snowy slope and securing your feet in the leather straps of the field. You then carefully lean towards the slope to start sliding down but then imminently leaning backward to keep from the shield's edge from getting caught on the snow in front of it and you going tumbling down the hill. You can then slide down the entire slope as long as you keep your balance.
Components and tools
All you would need is a shield of any kind, and some sort of protection to keep you safe if you take a tumble.
Observance
Shield surfing usually takes place on a snowy mountain.

Ah, but has saber skiing ever caught on?
I'll think about that, that's a good idea.
