Ein Bowra

"The last nomad-king to lay siege to Ein Bowra was forced to watch his children be thrown from the cliffs. We welcome your horde, savage, so we may break it too." - Sadiq Al Hasim, Ein Bowra Emir of War

Established five hundred years ago as a military outpost, Ein Bowra is a large city at the edges of the Bowra Pass canyonlands, the westernmost reaches of the Pashtu Desert, and the northern badlands of Traia. Ein Bowra is a partially walled city surrounding a large, verdant, oasis. Initially established to prevent Unbowed Nomads from raiding eastern Traia by coming across the northern portion of the Bowra Pass, Ein Bowra has grown into a large merchant city over the centuries since it's founding. The city sits on a steep hill tucked into the bend of the Mazii River. The wall surrounds three sides of the city, with the northern portion up against a cliff with a sixty-foot drop into the river below.   The city is one of the few places with an embassy for elves from Rost'elena as well as one for the Arbor Company, a Demenian

Demographics

Most people in Ein Bowra are Ethnic Traian, though approximately a third of the city's populace or only three or four generations removed from the Unbowed Nomads who rule the lands west of the city.

Government

Ein Bowra is ruled by The One Hundred Emirs who are all descended from a few dozen noble families who all report to a Grand Emir that is appointed by the Prince-Regent, Hakim Wazida.

Defences

The walls of Ein Bowra are fifty feet tall and twenty feet thick. It has one gate into the city and two sally ports with which to mount counter-offensives. The gate is protected by three watch towers, one of which is only accessible by a bridge from another tower. Inside the gate is a narrow bailey designed to slow an invading force while stripping away any advantage in numbers. The cliff at the southern edge of the city is practically sheer for much of its height with the bottom forty feet being actually sheer, as the rocks used to create the walls were quarried from the cliff face.   Each tower has at least two scorpions in it, allowing them long fields of fire at enemy forces. Ein Bowra encircles the entire oasis its built around and there are no other water sources for many miles; an besieging army will need dedicated supply lines to keep themselves hydrated. A garrison if Traian light infantry numbering more than 10,000 is in the city and some 5,000 heavy horse along with several battlemages. In a crisis the Emirs of Ein Bowra can raise levy forces from the populace; something that has only been done once in the city's centuries long history.

Infrastructure

Ein Bowra is a relatively rich city with paved roads, and high walls. The southern edge of the city is backed up against a nearly sheer cliff. Canopy covered markets fill courtyards and its government and temple buildings sit on a large hill at the westernmost edge of the city. Statuary lines the street in such quantities that the city is sometimes called Little Dashia, or Black Dashia, as the statues are largely carved from large chunks of black diorite found abundantly through the badlands.

Districts

Riverside is a long strip of slips, piers, drydocks, and warehouses. There is also a large garrison of Royal Army soldiers here.

History

Ein Bowra was founded six-hundred years ago as a military outpost to help stop raiding Unbowed Nomads from coming east to raid the larger, less heavily defended towns and villages east of the Bowra Pass. Over time a road was built from Ein Bowra north into Jandal and another to the Sphinx River, a tributary of the Mazii River to facilitate trade and supply movement.   Since then, and thanks to the efforts of dozens of Emirs and Princes, Ein Bowra has emerged as one of the wealthiest, and most powerful cities in the kingdom second only to the capital, Dashia.

Architecture

Wood is at a premium in all of Traia so most structures in Ein Bowra are made of mud brick, limestone, or sandstone. The walls of Ein Bowra are fifty feet tall, twenty feet thick at the base, and made of large blocks of limestone filled with rubble and sand.

Geography

Ein Bowra is situated on a high, rocky bluff with a large oasis at its base. At its southern edge is a cliff that falls for more than seventy feet until a quarry used to get material to construct the city's walls.   A road runs out from the city's only gate, positioned at the north, runs north and west until it meets the Mazii, and continues to run parallel with the river as long as it can before moving onto the Trade Road of Jandal. Another road easts, following along the wall of the city, to the Lion River and a small holdfast that looks over a working, if small, port for barges.
