Paladin

A Devout Warrior of Sacred Oaths

This Paladin article features subclass options for Erenel players in 5th Edition Dungeons and Dragons. The article will be updated over time as new subclasses are released! Some subclasses are only available for Gamingbrew Patrons!

Paladins are united by their oaths to stand against the forces of annihilation and corruption. Whether sworn before a god’s altar, in a sacred glade before nature spirits, or in a moment of desperation and grief with the dead as the only witnesses, a Paladin’s oath is a powerful bond. It is a source of power that turns a devout warrior into a blessed champion.   Paladins train to learn the skills of combat, mastering a variety of weapons and armor. Even so, their martial skills are secondary to the magical power they wield: power to heal the injured, smite their foes, and protect the helpless and those who fight at their side.   Almost by definition, the life of a Paladin is an adventuring life, for every Paladin lives on the front lines of the cosmic struggle against annihilation. Fighters are rare enough among the ranks of a world’s armies, but even fewer people can claim the calling of a Paladin. When they do receive the call, these blessed folk turn from their former occupations and take up arms and magic.

Oath of the Executioner

Deliver the Blade of Consequence
Paladins who swear the Oath of the Executioner do not flinch in the face of final judgment. They are the blade that ends suffering, the last breath before silence, and the enforcers of sentences long delayed. These solemn knights see mercy and justice as different paths and they walk the one that finishes what others cannot. Their vows bind them to act with resolve when guilt is clear and punishment is due, carrying out grim duties that others may fear or shun. Whether sanctioned by divine law, royal decree, or a personal code, Executioners deliver absolution through steel.   These paladins share the following tenets:
  • Once judgment is passed, see it through. There is no room for hesitation when justice demands an end.
  • Deliver punishment without cruelty or rage. The sentence is not yours to relish, only to fulfill.
  • Let your blade fall only where guilt is clear.

  • Available only for Gamingbrew Patrons. If you are a Patron the sub class will appear below.

    Oath of the Rift Warden

    Protect the Boundaries of Reality
Paladins who take the Oath of the Rift Warden are stalwart guardians against interdimensional threats, dedicating their lives to sealing planar rifts and protecting their world from other worldly creatures. Sworn to safeguard the fabric of reality, these paladins are skilled at detecting and combating entities from other realms. Whether defending their realm from fiends, elementals, aberrations, or other extraplanar invaders, Rift Wardens serve as a bulwark against chaos and strive to keep the planes in balance.   These paladins share the following tenets:
  • Close unstable and unsanctioned rifts.
  • Guard against extraplanar incursions.
  • Protect the innocent from otherworldly horror.

  • Available only for Gamingbrew Patrons. If you are a Patron the sub class will appear below.

    5E.14 Subclasses

Originally created for 5E.14, the subclasses below can be easily adapted for use with 5E.24 rules.

    Oath of Aegis

The Oath of Aegis binds a paladin in the service of others, vowing to protect the people and locations they deem in need. The Aegis seek to shield others from harm, standing as a bastion for places under assault, rescuing the innocent stranded in hostile situations, and even guarding important figures from assassination plots. While naysayers may view this as mercenary work, the Oath of Aegis view their divine mission as a sacred vow and will most likely seek atonement for failures. What separates the Oath of Aegis from a mercenary is the Oath of Aegis will simply refuse to protect a heinous person or sinful place.

Available only for Gamingbrew Patrons. If you are a Patron the sub class will appear below.

    Oath of Artillery

Paladins who take the Oath of Artillery share a fascination with advanced weaponry and seek to use such items in their crusade. However, they differ from other paladins in that black powder is their true religion, not the gods themselves.

Available only for Gamingbrew Patrons. If you are a Patron the sub class will appear below.

    Oath of Burning Soul

The Oath of Burning Soul calls a Paladin to emulate Hrólfr, the Ancient Wolf, the Primal Deity of ambition, retribution and wrath. Known as the Hungering Flame, Hrólfr is a being of anger whose divine might grows from the anger others experience on the mortal plane. When someone acts on rage, they lend the hungering flame strength. As an Oath of Burning Soul, you believe this is not a bad thing; there is much abhorrence in the world that deserves the focus of wrath.   Paladins who take the Oath of Burning Soul often join the Order of Ashen Fang. This name derives from the physical appearance of the Hungering Flame. Hrólfr is an enormous lupine creature with eyes of fire and fur that smolders in the dark, giving a silhouette of smoky ash.

Available only for Gamingbrew Patrons. If you are a Patron the sub class will appear below.

    Oath of Bushido

Paladins who take the Oath of Bushido aspire to the ways of the samurai. Honorable warriors who specialize in a versatile array of combat stances, the paladin holds themselves to the highest standards of conduct. These paladins serve those whom they are sworn to protect with unbreakable resolve and an implacable fighting spirit. Often, paladins who swear this oath serve a lord, whom they are sworn to protect. However, if a paladin can no longer serve whom they swore their oath, they can continue to follow the oath of bushido, living by the code while finding opportunities to help others.

Available only for Gamingbrew Patrons. If you are a Patron the sub class will appear below.

    Oath of Christmas Spirit

Paladins who take this oath are sworn to uphold the spirit of the holiday season. These paladins walk in the footsteps of Santa Claus, wearing his signature red coat with white fur collar and hat as they spread holiday cheer and defend the North Pole and its toymakers from mystical monsters.

    Channel Divinity

    Holly Jolly
As a reaction, you can choose a willing creature you can see within 30 feet of you and transfer a beneficial spell affecting you to the creature. Transferred effects can include ones you cast with a range of self. If the spell effect requires concentration, you or the creature that cast it must maintain concentration on it or the effect ends. After 1-minute, the beneficial spell effect is transferred back if it has not ended.
    Naughty or Nice
As a bonus action, choose a creature you can see within 60 feet. You identify the creature's alignment by quickly checking the naughty or nice list.

    Aura of Generosity

7th-level Oath of Christmas Spirit feature   You emanate an aura that fills you and your companions with goodwill. When you and any creature of your choice within 10 feet of you use a spell of 1st level or higher to restore hit points to a creature, the creature regains additional hit points equal to your Charisma modifier.   At 18th level, the range of this aura increases to 30 feet.

    Ho, Ho, Ho

15th-level Oath of Christmas Spirit feature   When you use your Divine Sense, as part of the action you can attempt to call all or some of the creatures you detect to you so they can share what they want for Christmas. Each creature you choose that you detect must succeed on a Wisdom saving or be compelled to move toward you on their next turn. A creature isn't compelled to move into an obviously deadly hazard, such as a fire pit, but it will provoke opportunity attacks to move closer to "Santa".   If a creature's saving throw is successful or the effect ends for it, the creature is immune to this feature for the next 24 hours.

    Season's Greetings

20th-level Oath of Christmas Spirit feature   You can empower yourself in the name of the Christmas Spirit. As a bonus action, you gain the following benefits for 1-minute.
  • You gain truesight with a range of 120 feet.
  • You can use your Holly Jolly feature without using your Channel Divinity.
  • When you take the attack action on your turn, you can replace one attack with Christmas Spirit. Creatures of your choice within your Aura of Generosity can use their reaction to regain 2d6 hit points. Creatures healed in this way also benefit from the additional healing provided by Aura of Generosity.
  • Once you use this feature, you can't use it again until you finish a long rest.

    Oath of the Dragon Knight

The Oath of the Dragon Knight is as old as the first ascendant dragons. Sometimes called dragon keepers, paladins who swear this oath dedicate themselves to serving as a protector of a powerful dragon. Typically, a dragon worthy of this oath is protected by multiple paladins, who form an order in the dragon’s name. They adorn their armor and clothing with scales and imagery to reflect their commitment to helping extend the dragon’s influence.   These paladins are also watchful guardians of a dragon’s nest. Dragon eggs require delicate incubation conditions over an extensive period of time. Often, paladins who swear this oath are tasked with both protecting a clutch and supervising newly hatched dragons emerging into the world. This act of devotion between a dragon and their Dragon Knight forms a lifelong bond few can aspire to experience.

    Subclass Flavor Recommendations
  • When summoning your Find Steed, flavor the steed's apperance to reflect the dragon type you've sworn to protect. Examples include giving it dragon scales, spinal frills, a spined crest or even having smoke vent from its snout!
  • When you use Divine Smite, consider how your smite explodes and cascade off a target, similar to a dragon's breath weapon.
  • When using your Lay on Hands, perhaps your touch is not "blessed" but painfully cauterizes the wound.
  • Consider asking your Dungeon Master if your Divine Sense can also include the dragon creature type.

    Oath of the Gear Priests

A sentient construct known as the P.R.I.M.U.S. has been uncovered in a titanic mechanical vault deep within Erenel. Upon waking, the P.R.I.M.U.S. claimed to be from another universe, sent by the Architect Sal’uthiri to “repair” Erenel after the death of its own Architect. Now, the P.R.I.M.U.S. lies dormant, its power source removed and hidden.   Gear Priests are zealots who believe absolute truth will be provided when the P.R.I.M.U.S. awakens. Using mechanical gauntlets crafted by gifted pieces of the P.R.I.M.U.S., Gear Priests defend the resting sentient construct and await their truth.
Available only for Gamingbrew Patrons. If you are a Patron the sub class will appear below.

    Oath of the Judge

Paladins who take an Oath of the Judge are most commonly known as Judges of the Creed, an independent, nation-neutral magical law agency. The Creed act as arcane law officers insisting that citizens be forbidden from using any magic except in self-defense; even then, Necromancy, Evocation, and Enchantment are frowned upon.   Much of a Judge’s work involves wandering Erenel, preventing otherwise unreported crimes. However, certain matters require that a creature is brought back to face trial in one of the Creed’s courts. A Judge can be hired by local governments to mediate disputes, helping fix the inherent imbalance caused by magic users.

    Oath of the Locust Song

Those who take this Sacred Oath believe that the destruction of life is an equal measure important to the state of nature as is maintaining it.   Paladins of the Locust Song learn to control their own swarm of cicadas through their divine will. Some even go as far as to let the insects burrow into and infest pockets of their skin. For a paladin of this Sacred Oath, even to the chagrin of others, rebirth cannot exist without the death that comes before.

    Voracious Siphon

As an action, you can use your Channel Divinity to imbue your weapon with the power to rip the life from your foes. • You can use your bonus action to consume an undead creature you control, gaining temporary hit points equal to your Paladin class.
  • You emanate an aura of ravenous insects in a 15-foot radius. The first time any hostile creature enters the aura or starts its turn inside, the creature must make a Constitution saving throw or become blinded until the start of its next turn.
  • Once you use this feature, you can’t use it again until you finish a long rest.
