Palatine Guard
The Palatine Guard are the most admired and feared soldiers of the Empire, and only the most fanatical warriors are admitted into their ranks. Once merely the palace guard of the Emperor, they are now seen occasionally fighting on the battlefield when the fate of the realm hangs in the balance. In battle, they charge into enemy ranks with a nearly insane disregard for their own safety, shrugging off arrows and sword blows as they carve a bloody swathe through their foes with their mighty greatswords.
The signature uniform of the Palatine guard is a winged helmet, flowing bear or wolf fur cloak, and a two-handed greatsword. For additional protection, they are granted expensive scale or chainmail armour.
To ensure their utmost dedication to the Emperor, the Palatine Guard and their families are required to live adjacent to the Palace in Holmgard. In return for their devotion, they are granted apartments made of stone - a great luxury. Promotion to the Palatine Guard is one of few ways for a commoner to progress to the highest ranks of society, but is uncommon: only between 1,000 - 2,000 are active at a given time.
