Donatien Victoire

The true father of blood and darkness

Donatien Victoire

Donatien Victoire is the father of the Vampire race, borne of a curse given to him over 10,000 years ago by the god of Death, Jul Cassan.   The former demigod was given this curse when he and his best friend, a demigod named Faolan, attempted to take over Erde and challenge the power of The Three for the control of Erde and the power of the Ormandyr .   Since then, he has bided his time, occasionally siring new vampires to slowly build an empire and amass enough power to rule Erde once more.

Personal history

Donatien was born in the early days of Erde, at a time when the gods walked the Material Realm. He is the son of the God of Death, Jul Cassan, and a noble Erulaeren female, Victora Sanerae.   Because of his noble upbringing and deific heritage, he spent most of his life mingling with the upper crust of the Erulaeren society, including other children of greater and lesser gods. His best friend was an intelligent but fierce young man named Faolan, the son of a lesser god of battle, Gabriel. The two met during a grand ball Gabriel's family held, one that the Erulaeren nobility and the gods were invited to attend. He had been wandering the estate hoping his father had descended to participate but instead found Faolan. They spent hours away from the ballroom, becoming fast friends, until Faolan's mother found him and insisted he return to the festivities.   In the days to come, Donatien spent more time at the estate of Faolan's family and found a father figure in Gabriel, where he was noticeably absent. Through him, he learned of his father's teachings and the differences between his and Gabriel's beliefs on battle and death. His father handled all death through balance, but Gabriel believed peace was insufficient. After all, the lands they had attained were done through the glory of battle, fighting primitive humanoids and fierce beasts to secure their footholds across Erde.   He had wondered why the gods, especially The Three, had clamored for peace. After all, did they not bless the Erulaeren with the power of the dragons, the children of the Great Wyrm, Orm? These creatures were fierce and intelligent but were hunters all the same. They lived to kill, to devour, and to accumulate wealth. The Ormandyr, the great Erulaeren blessed to command the skies, were amongst the highest ranking of their race, with good reason.   He contemplated Gabriel's words extensively and long debated with Faolan on these matters, for he also believed his father's words. He began to believe that displays of power were instrumental to maintaining the order of Erde, and he also began to long for that power himself. Even though he was the stepson of an Ormandyr, his heritage as a half-Erulaeren denied him the right to bond with a dragon. Determined to obtain what he believed was rightfully his, he sought a way to get the bond on his own with the strong magic both of his lineages provided.   He told Faolan of his plan, and together, they developed a way to bond a dragon to them. They did not want to wait for the birth of the next clutch and instead chose to go after the unbonded children of Orm, powerful dragons who were already grown and strong. In doing this, they believed they could obtain a power great enough to challenge the gods for the right to rule the affairs of Erde.   When they were ready, they set out to find Orm's children and, against all odds, successfully created a tether to the dragons. The great beasts protested at first, for the bond itself was never meant to be domination of the dragon by its rider but a coexistence, a powerful link to each other in which emotions were shared. But Donatien and Faolan had befouled the bond and, with their divine power, forced the dragons to submit to them. They then took to the skies with their new dragons, enjoying the taste of power and freedom it gave them.   They used their dragons to travel to other settlements to declare their rule over Erde and demand loyalty. Many Erulaeren resisted, but Donatien would have nothing less than total devotion. He used his bonded divine powers to make an example of some of the local Ormandyr leaders, their dragons powerful but unable to stand up to Orm's children. Powerless to stand against the demigods, many remaining nobles swore their allegiance out of fear.   Some lesser gods, worried about the regions they had settled as their own amongst the Erulaeren, implored Gabriel to speak to Donatien and Faolan. Gabriel brought their concerns to Faolan, who said he would ask Donatien to back down. But the request only made Donatien more determined to prove himself better than the gods. Instead of continuing his conquest of the Ormandyr, he turned to the gods and told them to back down.   By this time, Orm had learned of his children's fates and had been enraged enough to take his anger to The Three. Initially, Jul Cassan did not want to get involved, but when his son started making demands of the gods, The Three realized they would need to step in and stop the two young demigods. The Three appeared on Erde with Orm by their side and implored Donatien to stop his madness. Donatien responded by commanding him and Faolan to attack them. Upon their bonded dragons, they charged, but before they could reach the gods, Orm freed his children from their enslavement. The dragons became enraged at their riders and threw them off their backs, forcing Donatien and Faolan to the ground. With the loss of their powerful dragons, they were no match for The Three.   Though Jul Cassan did not want to punish his son, he knew that Donatien and Faolan could not be forgiven for this transgression. Orm demanded their blood, and Anka and Norne urged him to punish them appropriately. After a lengthy discussion between the divine siblings, their sentence was decided. For Donatien, he was given the curse of a life of undeath, never to live but never to die, and his bloodlust would never be sated unless he drank the blood of others. He would lose all of his mortal attachments over time and would never again be able to rejoin living society. The sun would be forever lost to him, and he would be forced to wander the nights alone for all eternity. For Faolan, he was given the form of a monstrous wolf that would never die but never allow him to live amongst the mortals, for he would lose any semblance of humanity and would traverse the world on instinct alone. If he came upon another mortal, his bite would poison them and spread his curse to them to become monsters themselves. To ensure that Faolan and Donatien could never conspire again, they made them unable to come upon each other without trying to kill each other.   If what he had done against the Ormandyr weren't problem enough, his curse was enough for Lord Zeren Sanerae to send Donatien forth from his house. After he succumbed to his bloodlust more than once, the people he once called friends shunned him and chased him out. Alone and desperate for companionship, he wandered through the wilderness of Eastern Galea, seeking new signs of civilization. Still, each time he came across others, the bloodlust became too great, and he would drink too deep. He repeatedly tried to find ways to sate his thirst without killing his victims, and it was by complete accident that he had learned to make more of himself.   He had drained yet another mortal nearly to death but noticed a faint heartbeat. In his panic, he tried to feed him his blood, and it was with great surprise that the mortal began writhing in pain and then suddenly gasped a breath of life. He watched in shock as the mortal turned deathly pale and his canines elongated. He could feel his blood coursing through the now-fledgling, a connection he had never felt before. But it wouldn't last. As the fledgling realized what had happened to him, he cursed Donatien and fled. Donatien later discovered that the fledgling, unaware of the weaknesses bestowed upon him in his cursed form, walked into the sun and burned to ash.   But that was the start of his beginning to make others of himself. At first, it was always the same result; the fledgling would not give Donatien a chance to explain their new immortality and fled, only to find their fates with the sun. Eventually, some started to stay with him, and he taught them how to live as vampires. But turned against their will, they still grew to hate him, to hate that they had been stolen from the only lives they knew, and they eventually left him. As the years turned into centuries, he began to come across other young vampires he did not know, and he realized that his fledglings had lived, found loneliness, and tried to bring their companions into the darkness.   He missed the fall of the Erulaeren, but on his wanderings, he began to realize that the settlements around the world had started to change. Where the Erulaeren ruled, they began forming new races: Gold Elves, Silver Elves, Moon Elves, and others. More prominent in the world were humans, as well, primitive when the Erulaeren were sky-bound but now taking on their settlements. The fear these primitive humans felt when he turned them drove them away from him. But now they were more intelligent, more capable, and while still reliant on their limited years of knowledge, grew to find leisure and love, much as the elves had.   By this time, after all the trial and error of making other vampires, he had begun to learn to control his bloodlust enough to integrate himself into cities. While attempting not to harm mortals when turning them, he had discovered the eroticism of the small drink and had learned to seduce mortals into pleasure while sating his thirst. His own heightened senses found the closeness and joy from this intoxicating. While he no longer wanted to return to society, his attachments to his old life long gone by now, he desired the intimacy of this newfound way of drinking.   Around this time, he met with a young human woman named Aleksa Kouris at an evening high society event that he had been using as his hunting grounds for the night. He charmed her into a dance, which they did for a couple of hours. She was happily willing to leave after that, bored by the ball and more intrigued by Donatien's exoticism. They wandered the gardens, lit only by the moonlight, and as they chatted, Donatien found himself fascinated by a mortal for the first time. By the end of the night, they had captured the eyes and hearts of each other so powerfully that they found each other in bed, where Donatien drank but gave her the most pleasurable night in her life.   The nights went on, and Donatien did not leave the city. He kept returning to Aleksa, who had learned what he was by this time, but unlike the others, she was unafraid. Of course, she had heard the tales of the terrifying monsters of the night, but Donatien seemed nothing like what she had learned. Driven by a desire for the repeated pleasure he had given her before, she started to let him drink from her regularly. And Donatien found pleasure in no one else. Eventually, Aleksa fell in love with Donatien, but because of his curse, his lifetime away from mortal attachments, he could not reciprocate that love however she wanted. She could not have a life with him, for he had no life to provide her, save one.   Donatien still craved companionship, even if he could not love like mortals. And he, too, knew that her life was far too short for his mortal existence and that someday, she would be gone from his life forever. So he decided to try again to make another fledgling, hoping this one would stay by his side. He offered her, and naturally, she was hesitant at first. But her mortal life was cruel and sad. She was merely the property of her father to be given away in exchange for goods. He treated her as such, and her mother agreed. Charmed by a life of freedom, with her great love, she accepted.   Donatien stole her away one night to his haven. They spent the night together, and he explained to her what she would become and how it would change her, and he ensured that this was what she wanted. When she was ready, he began the act of turning her. He made love to her, and when he drained her, he made it as pleasurable as any of their nights of passion. When he felt her fear of her impending death, the heartbeat slowed to the barest of beats, he gave her his blood.   And then, something incredible happened. After the pain of Aleksa's transformation had diminished, he could feel a connection between them, much more potent than any other he had created. There was a sense of emotion there; he could feel as she felt, the eager young student. Overjoyed by this new presence, he took Aleksa out into the night and showed her the first hunt.   Aleksa and Donatien spent years together as sire and childe. Donatien was patient but stern. He had survived all these years alone by many rules, and he was not about to see Aleksa fall victim to the same pitfalls that ensnared former fledglings. They left her hometown and began wandering. Years passed, and as Aleksa grew stronger, distant, and less human, she could move about more independently. However, her love for Donaten stayed through their bond, and she became possessive and jealous. Donatien would initially appease her, but when she became petulant, he was forced to punish her or send her off for days, sometimes years, so she could take some time to herself and learn to be without him.   While Aleksa was off finding herself, he would travel for a bit, setting up havens and catching up on the modernization of the various civilizations. He preferred to ensure they would always have a place to escape to, as, by this time, he had become quite known. Ancient tomes had been found detailing the story of him and Faolan, and newer books were written that described the nature of vampires, werewolves, and other supernatural predators. Mortals with righteous cause would take up weapons and hunt him and his kind. And though he did not fear them, far too old to be significantly affected by most of their paltry attempts, he did find them amusing. More often than not, he would turn their chase into a game, one he would play with them until he grew bored enough to end their lives.   One such fascination of his was a Moon Elf named Ailmon Siadu. For over twenty years, Donatien played a cat-and-mouse game with the hunter, providing him with a trail of death that only served to enrage Ailmon even further. And every time Ailmon thought he had Donatien trapped, he would prove to him that he was never in danger of being caught in the first place. He dragged Ailmon worldwide, through Northern Galea, Avonan, and even parts of Terra. But eventually, the game started to become a bit tiresome to him. Ailmon had become so predictable.    One night, as Ailmon was out seeking more information about him, he entered the hunter's inn room in Perendim to see what he could use to end this game. He came across a letter from his niece, begging Ailmon to attend her coming-of-age ceremony. Donatien thought this would be the perfect end to the game. Ailmon had no idea he was providing the vampire with a feast of Moon Elves. He followed Ailmon across the sea to the Keleshin Mountains and stayed hidden in the shadows as he watched the family celebrate Sasha's 100th birthday. As he watched, he found that the young Moon Elf intrigued him. Sasha was beautiful, but there was also a strength to her that he rarely found in mortals. She captured his attention for the rest of the night.   He waited until the last elf settled down for the night before he made his move. He silently drained each of Ailmon's family from room to room, enjoying the rare taste of Moon Elf blood. When he reached the chamber of Ailmon's sister, he decided to make his presence known there. First, he went after Sasha's father, making no attempt to hide his attack, knowing it would wake the wife. He had to stop the chuckle as she awoke and predictably screamed while he ripped out her husband's throat. Dropping him unceremoniously to the bed, he stopped her screams when he grabbed her and sank his teeth into her neck.   He was aware of Ailmon's presence by then but ignored him in favor of the drink, letting him believe he had caught him unawares. He also felt Sasha's presence behind him; he could hear her racing heart, the blood pumping through her veins. He could feel her fear as she realized that her parents were dead. As he dropped her mother's body onto the bed, he wondered if Sasha would be worth another game. Just as Ailmon approached him with a stake in hand, Donatien swiftly turned around and grabbed the elven wizard, lifting him into the air and taunting him of his failures over the years. He mocked him for his persistent attempt to chase him from continent to continent but thanked him for providing such entertainment.    For a moment, he was tempted to let the game continue with Ailmon, knowing that the death of his family would drive him to chase him to the ends of Erde. But then he considered Sasha. The young elf had promise and determination; even through fear, he knew she would somehow try to avenge her family. But, more importantly, she had the makings of becoming a strong potential vampire. Turning is a decision he never made lightly anymore; he stopped making vampires after Aleksa. But this one, with the right incentive, could be the perfect child.   Satisfied with his current game, he snapped Ailmon's neck rather than draining him and turned to Sasha. He introduced himself and assured her she was the only remaining Siadu. He then considered aloud that perhaps he should end the whole line. He waited to see how she reacted, and when he felt her tense but did not try to run, he understood that she was accepting her fate. He then understood that she would play his game, and he walked away from her and told her to find him if she could.   He watched her through the years as she sought to learn more about him and his kind. Every time she would get close to finding a book that detailed his story, he would take it and add it to his collection. After twenty years of this, Sasha still had not come. Any closer to hunting him down. Donatien grew bored of the fruitless chase, no longer entertained by her lack of action. He continued to believe that she might become a worthy child to him, though, so he devised a new game.   His taunt of Eternia to Ailmon was a clue he had left for her, so he traveled down to the isolated nation to await her, and when she finally arrived, he left an obvious trail for her to follow. He made himself home at the estate of a local nobility, the Ravendales, and bound some of them as his pets, slaughtering the rest and any who had come to rescue them. He then sent a message along with a mortal he let live and bided his time.   Soon, Sasha made her appearance. He let her slip into the estate and waited patiently in the library for her to retrieve the book. He could hear her blood quicken as she entered the library, smell her anticipation, and then fear as she realized he was there. He waited a few moments for her to show herself, and when she didn't, he read from the book, giving her all the answers she had been seeking before finally expressing his disappointment in her futile search.    He then put the book away and stalked her around the library while he talked to her. He continued talking about his boredom with the hunt and his disappointment before finally revealing himself before her. Sasha finally spoke and accused him of not giving her time to prepare to challenge him. Donatien shot back that she was supposed to provide him with the entertainment that her uncle did.    Then Donatien rushed forward and pressed her against the wall, sinking his teeth into her and drinking. He didn't give her pleasure or pain, and she still managed to act defiant through his drink, though resigned to her fate. She asked him how her blood tasted compared to that of her family. Amused and a little proud that she would remain defiant even when she believed it was the end, he decided to appease her by answering. However, to keep playing this game, he lied about how her parents tasted while distracting her by comparing her blood.   She was so focused on the resignation of her death that she never noticed how close to the cusp she was. She never noticed that when he gave her the tiny drop of his blood, he had stopped her death and started her path to turning. He tried to get her to understand what was happening to her as he made her drink his blood and found himself a bit surprised when she could not recognize the change on her own. She could see the subtle notes of change in the blood she drank, and he had to attribute her lack of notice of her senses to their similarities in the Moon Elf heritage. He let her drink as much as she could to sate the bloodlust he knew would come and then let her sleep. It was close to dawn, after all, and the new fledgling would not be able to stay awake. He then laid her down on the bed and fell asleep beside her.   As he kept his new fledgling locked away with him in the castle, he played a game with her. He did not teach her to hunt and forced her to learn what she was on her own, letting her believe the blood he brought to her was wine for some time until she finally admitted that she realized he had turned her. She entertained him for a little with her naivete, but unlike Aleksa, a bond never grew between them. Donatien believed this method may have allowed her to understand a vampire differently, but she grew to hate him like many of his previous fledglings. And eventually, like his other fledglings, she left him. What hurt him even more about this one is that she had found solace in his father, and to spite him, Jul Cassan had given her divine gifts.    Still, he loved his games, and perhaps someday, he could find a way to bring her home. He continued to watch her, and occasionally, he would make himself known and try to get her back to his side again. She was vital to him, even if she didn't think so.   On another one of his travels, he came across a curious sight. Two Celestials had traveled to Erde from Elu and enjoyed the cool river waters, splashing and playing under the moon's light. Ever the charming hunter, Donatien approached them warmly and even made out to be in awe of their divine presence. He soon realized they had never met a vampire before, nor did they know what one was, so he set about slowly enthralling them to him, not with his powers, but with his words.   Loving and naive, the twin Celestials, Aris and Axis, fell for his charms. They made plans to meet repeatedly, for the twins were fascinated by the material realm and wanted to learn all they could. Donatien was curious to know what divine blood tasted like, so he played a long game with them, first getting them to trust him and eventually revealing himself to them, telling them nothing of his monstrous nature and teaching them the pleasures they could learn. He seduced them into his bed and showed them what pleasure he could give them. He drank their blood and found it intoxicating. They, in turn, learned of the mortal pleasures of the flesh.   For months, they returned to Donatien as companions, and Donatien continued to entertain them, showing them all they cared to learn about the mortal world while regularly drinking their blood. The twins knew this relationship was forbidden, but Donatien convinced them to continue it anyway. For a while, they almost forgot about Elu. But a time came when they longed for their brethren, longed for the songs of Iona, and so they said their goodbyes to Donatien and left him.   Upon their return to Elu, they were initially welcomed and asked to share their stories of the material realm. Iona sensed that the twins were not being entirely truthful. She was appalled and enraged when she finally got the full story from them. She banished them from Elu for allowing the vampire to take their divine blood. The twins were dismayed, blaming Donatien for tricking them and causing their fall from Iona's grace. They vowed vengeance, declaring that never again would a vampire drink their blood, and began to seek out information on killing vampires before returning to Donatien once more.   Donatien welcomed them back eagerly, and the twins managed to convince them they had returned because they missed him. They spent the night pretending nothing was amiss, and eventually, they fell into bed together, as was their routine. But this time, before Donatien could go much further, Aris plunged a silver dagger into his heart. The surprise was palpable on all three of them when it did not kill Donatien. Shock then turned to rage as Donatien pulled the dagger from his chest and tried to attack the twins, but they fled.   Donatien let them run and wondered why the dagger hadn't killed him. He touched the silver and felt nothing. No pain, no lethargy. The blade was most assuredly silver; he could smell it. Only then did he remember the fights with Faolan when they came across one another. He remembered biting down on the werewolf and drinking some of his blood. And he remembered the aggressive feeling he had afterward. He never obtained anything special from other mortals, but supernatural or divine entities seemed to give him new properties. He left home and wandered to a nearby church to test this theory. There, he found that the holy symbols did not affect him, nor did holy water seem to burn. It appeared that the Celestials had given him a protective gift against the divine implements that used to drive him away.   Unfortunately, the twins were long gone, so he could never drink their blood again. Soon after, Aleksa returned to him, and he turned his thoughts elsewhere. But the power of the Celestials always lay in the back of his mind for his plans.   During another one of these times of sending Aleksa off, he met another woman named Rosalie Delacroix. She was another woman of high standing, as Donatien continued to find himself drawn to the rich and powerful. Unlike Aleksa, however, Donatien found that Rosalie rejected his advances. Donatien was intrigued, and he wanted more from her. He had an inexplicable desire to possess her but not turn her like Aleksa. So, one day, he stole her away from her manor and took him to his haven. During the day, he locked her away so she couldn't escape, and during the night, she was his.   She rebuffed him no matter how much he tried to charm her without using his powers. He tried to demand her obedience, love, anything that would show she wanted him, but her will was strong, and she fought hard. One day, despite being afraid of him, she tried to attack him. In the scuffle, she bit him hard. It cut into his skin, and though he pulled away, she had already gotten his blood in her mouth. He backhanded her and ordered her never to do that again, and her response to him was an immediate, "Yes, Master." His shock was palpable. She had never been complacent before, and now she acted like his slave.   He left her for a few days, hoping for things to calm down and contemplating what had happened. When he returned, she was back to her old self. Curious, he brought her a wine glass with his blood and told her to drink it. She complied, thinking it was wine, but no sooner had she ingested a sip than she was already spitting it out. He told her to finish it all, and without hesitation, she obeyed. He realized he could bind mortals to him with his blood.   Rosalie was now his, and he kept her by his side for years, experimenting with what else he could learn about his powers with mortals. He gave her all she could want: pleasure, gifts, life in the haven, and in return, she gave him her blood, her life, and eventually something unexpected: a daughter. In their affairs, Donatien had learned to manipulate life, and together, they brought forth a Dhampyr named Angelique Madeleine Delacroix. Donatien was overjoyed, for he had what he thought was a family. He could see the vampire in Angelique, but also human, and more importantly, that she could be in the sun without harm.   He immediately set about trying to teach her his way of life. But while Rosalie may have been bound to him, she undermined his teachings to his daughter during the day. She grew to deny her vampiric side and to hate him as much as his mother did. So he grew forceful; he tried to feed her his blood to bind her human side but found she was immune. He tried to force her to become the vampire she was supposed to be, and she would not drink blood. Donatien became angrier over the years, and his methods became crueler as he tried to force her to be what he wanted. He drained her and forced her to hunt; he harmed her when she would not obey, and eventually, he gave up.   By this time, Aleksa had returned to him and discovered Rosalie and Angelique. In a jealous rage, she tried to murder both of them, but Donatien found her before she could get to Angelique. Angered that he would harm one of his pets, he dismissed her again from his sight. She fled, and Angelique woke to find Donatien standing over Rosalie's drained corpse. Angelique declared her hatred for him, promised vengeance, and ran into the night. Donatien was alone again.   He began to contemplate all that had transpired over the years, the different abilities he had gained, the new ways a vampire could control their environment, control their society, and control the mortals. His desire for power had never waned through this divine punishment, and as his power grew, he began to believe that his vampirism was more of a blessing than a curse. Around this time, he met a pair of twin vampires named Lomi Altreides and Cale Altreides, who were training their latest fledgling, a former succubus named Axxia.   It was rare that vampires came together like this, but as they had all learned to integrate into society, they had become socialites in their own right. They decided to swap stories of their travels, all of them intrigued by each other, and neither the twins nor Donatien was able to gauge the age of the others but understanding that they were old and that they had learned some things about their abilities as they aged. Before the night was done, they parted ways to hunt. Every few nights after that, Donatien would come across them again in the same city, or he'd sense their presence. So they would meet up once more and enjoy the night. Aleksa soon found them and joined them in their nightly meetings.   Donatien had spent so many years before Aleksa, having others of his kind hate him, and though he had become accustomed to the solitude, he knew that his plans to get revenge on the gods required him to build an army. So, while they were sharing stories, Donatien decided to reveal some of the abilities he had learned over the years, unconcerned that they could use them against him in the future. Eventually, talk of powers led to the discussion of bound mortals and Blood Dolls. All of them had kept pets over the years; some were bloodbound, but their need to move on from the city to avoid suspicion always led to them leaving them behind, sometimes for years.   They mused about a way to have a city of their own, where they could keep their pets and perhaps use them to handle the city's affairs during the day, at first joking. But the more they talked about how they would do it, the more Donatien realized that this could be a way to start gathering vampires. He discussed it more seriously with the twins, the rules they would have to implement, and where they could have a suitable location.   Donatien remembered an outcropping of mountain peaks known as the Seacross Peaks north of his mortal home that had become the home of a city of dwarves over the centuries and before that had been a monastery for oracles of Norne. Lomi and Cale thought an underground sanctuary would draw in vampires of all ages, so the five set out to Northeastern Galea to learn more about the dwarven city. As it turned out, they would not have to do much by way of clearing out; when they arrived, the dwarves were long gone. Evidence suggested some great battle, but no signs of anything currently amiss. So, the vampires took the city for themselves and named it Ville de Sang.   They first brought their pets and other blood dolls to the city for a constant food source when they could not hunt. Then they sent out the whispers of the new town, drawing in old and new vampires alike. Since vampires had never previously lived in such numbers so close together, Donatien and the twins realized they would need to enact rules. They created laws protecting the vampires and mortals living in such close quarters to a civilization of predators.   With the twins' help, the society in Ville de Sang thrived beyond Donatien's wildest dreams. Now, he just needed to keep building and bide his time, for as his power continued to grow, he came closer to finally finishing what he started so many millennia ago.
