Eglasil

Eglasil is the second largest city of the Archonry of Norisil. Having survived the Sundering with little damage, the city soon found itself no longer a riverside city of moderate size but now a coastal township poised to be Norisils only Western port. During the time of the Maelstrom, this did not leave a great deal of ocean fair trade, but it was the closest port to reach the north of what remained of Velthanor. Eglasil became a military stronghold and naval base of operation for the Moon Elves Sea Guard to defend Southern Velthanor from Shadow Elf Raiders. Embroiled in some recent political upheaval the Túrano was supplanted by his heir, via political scandal vs an outright coup. The city since the maelstroms end has come alive with trade, but retains its martial atmosphere.

Demographics

Eglasil is comprised of primarily Moon Elves, the descendants of those who inhabited this region before the Sundering as well as those Moon Elves and that survived or returned to Velthanor when foreign enclaves were abandoned. A small population of Kobolds and Drakania of Crystal Dragon descent also reside within the city and since the end of the maelstrom, a human enclave has arisen to facilitate trade outside of Velthanor.

Government

Like most major Elven cities, this one is ruled by a Túrano(Archon), which is a hereditary lordship. The Archon of Eglasil is also a military commander responsible for the defense of the Inner Sea of Velthanor. The surrounding townships, hamlets, and villages that support the urban center are each lead by Elven Lords who form a council to advice the Archon, but general management of the City falls to the Archons House and its appointed bureaucrats.

Defences

Eglasil keeps a large naval presence, mounted riders to move along the coasts and a large cadre of Eagle Riders to watch over the skies of Velthanor. It boasts a larger garrison then other Moon Elf cities, but it has also been embattled with Shadow Elves more then other Southern Cities of Velthanor. The Harbor itself has several magical defenses that make a full naval assault upon the city a dangerous proposition for any but the most powerful of Naval forces.

Industry & Trade

Eglasil primary industry is in its Shipwrights, creating the finest vessels in all of Velthanor. Not only are the Shipwrights of incredible talent, but the lumber harvested from the surrounding area and the fine craftsmanship of the various carpenters of Eglasil make for a booming industry for the city. The city also produces a wide variety of arms, armor, and machines of war to support the military and the warships the shipwrights produce.

Infrastructure

Eglasil is a port city with a small river delta cris crossing its way to the sea. Winding roads mingle with gondolas and water ways to allow citizen to traverse the city with ease. Combined with the twilight forest the shrouds most of Norisil, its citizens are also able to walk the ways of the great trees allowing for quick movement to various points around the city

Districts

  • Celestara Heights is home to Eglasil’s elite, perched upon the city’s highest hill. Grand estates and moonlit gardens line its streets, hosting nobles, foreign diplomats, and the influential Silver Lantern Society and their Observatory and Library. Its serene beauty contrasts with the city's bustling port.

  •
  • Moonshadow Hollow is a bustling, vibrant residential district primarily inhabited by tradespeople, artisans, and common folk. While it lacks the grandeur of the city’s elite areas, it thrives on its hardworking spirit and offers a lively blend of industry and home life. The district is also home to several taverns and inns that cater to travelers and workers alike.

  •
  • Crystalshade Enclave is home to a vibrant community of Kobolds and Drakania. While they have integrate well into elven society, this district still holds a distinct flare in its construction to resemble more Draconic stylings and above ground "caves" then the reaching spires of elven construction. Unique artisans and foods can be found within this enclave of the city.

  •
  • Verdant Cross is one of the oldest parts of the city, and retains its pre-Sundering charm. Found at a crossing of the Eglasil River, this part of the old township collected lumber for its eventual shipping down river. Winding streets and ancient architecture define this district, which houses the Temple of the Lunar Grove and several historic inns which still serve those coming from the interior of Norisil.

  •
  • Castellar Elana is the original castle of Eglasil. It serves as the seat of the Túrano and a symbol of the city’s resilience. Heavily fortified and steeped in history, it houses the Archon’s personal residence and court. The citadel here boasts several magical wards, and rumors of a network of hidden passages allowing the Archon to come and go unnoticed.

  •
  • Azure Villiage was one of the first districts created as Eglasil expanded after the sunder. A commercial hub for local artisans it now blends its historic significance with modern commerce. •
  • Skyreach Terrace is situated on the slopes leading down from the Celestra Heights and is the most heavily forested district within the walls of Eglasil. The tall trees here hold many aviaries for the eagle mounts of the Argent Wings. Watchtowers dot the district, offering sweeping views of the Inner Sea and the surrounding country. Along with the Argent Wing Chapterhouse, aviaries, and training yards, the Skyreach Terrace is a sprawling residential district.

  •
  • Whisper Shores is a coastal district dedicated to the training of Eglasil’s naval forces. Outside the city walls, this place is used to train new recruits and is a proving ground for the Seaguard of House Elana. It also houses a rural community of fishermen and others who harvest the nearby waters for the city's sustenance.

  •
  • Argentrise Fields stretches along the river delta ,providing Eglasil with its agricultural lifeline. Rolling farmlands, orchards, and water mills dominate the landscape, supporting both the city’s population and its alchemical industries.

Guilds and Factions

Eglasil has several guilds, families, and trade associations along with various noble houses. The Starbinders Guild is by far the most powerful entity when it comes to commerce and operation of the city as they oversee the shipwrights and manage the docks of the city. Among the foreign Enclave the Tidecallers Syndicate is a trading house of great prominence that liasons between the city and most all foreign traders. The Moonlit Aegis form the city watch, and while not technically a formal military force, they do train alongside the Seaguard and are made of stiffer stuff then traditional city guards. The Argent Wings are current and former members of the Elite Eagle Riders of Eglasil. They have a guild house and tavern within the city and are often hot headed and eager to show why they are the bravest and best of Norisils defenders. The last society of note within Eglasil is the Silver Lantern Society, a collection of Antiquarians, researchers, loremasters and astronomers who opperate a large observatory within the city.

History

Eglasil was a moderate forest hamlet upon the Eglasil river that ran thru southern Velthanor. A humble logging and forestry township, this all changed when it soon found itself upon the Sea in the aftermath of the Sundering. It took several decades if not centuries for the city to build itself up into the metropolis it is today. The city took serious its new found roll as the oceanic gateway to the inner sea and safe harbor from the catastrophic maelstrom.

Climate

Being in the more southern reaches of Velthanor, Eglasil is like the majority of the Subtropical region of Norisil, warm and humid. However within the Twilight forest of of Eglasil, the sun never quite reaches its zenith and the temperatures remain cool within the trees canopy.
