Crossroads Ruler
"Crossroads King" or "Crossroads Queen" is a title coveted by most or all of the Borderlords of the Midkingdoms. As an actual person, this figure seems to be anecdotal or semi-mythical at best, a perpetual running joke among Midlanders at worst.
Over the rocky course of the Midkingdoms history, there have been many petty warlords who have claimed or attempted to claim the title of Crossroads King or Queen, but none have ever consolidated enough power for more than a handful of their ardent followers to consider them worthy of the presumption. Even those who gathered enough of a following to be considered have died soon after, and died bloody...
Rumours and legends about past Crossroads Rulers, however, often include some mysterious similarities; that the King or Queen has the power to invoke boons upon their supplicants at the Crossroads at midnight, that those who do the bidding of this individual may attain supernatural might or the granting of wishes, albeit for a terrible price.
It is also rumoured that those who claim the title falsely, or who break a pact with the true King of the Crossroads, are cursed most terribly for all eternity...though quite why or how vary dramatically from tale to tale.
