The National Society of Superheroes

The original group of superheroes, actually beginning in the late 1930's as more of a social club than a team of superheroes. As it did for everyone, however, the National Society changed entirely in response to World War II. Members ranged from enlisted heroes on the battlefront such as The Bronze Man, Miss Victory and Captain Battle, to domestic vigilantes such as The Black Terror, Mr. Mercury and The Black Cat.
Protecting Allied concerns at home and abroad, the group would eventually go on to include nearly every costumed hero in some capacity. Various incarnations of the Society have come up in the silver age (chaired by super-scientist Atoman) and bronze age (welcoming heroes such as The Butterfly), and has recently come back to prominence in the modern era. Consistently, the Society has formed around a core idea of training the superheroes of the upcoming generation, as well as providing them with a platform to take charge and grow into their full potential.
The National Society of Superheroes' defining moment, however, came after the war during the 'red scare.' The McCarthy hearings had ravaged Hollywood, and before looking to take on the US military, the HCUA decided to call in the entire subculture of superheroes for cross-examination. What McCarthy and company found, however, was massive public support for their heroes. Everyone with an enlisted family member had a story about Yankee Girl saving their father's unit, or the Green Turtle shielding them from certain death. Members of the Society never forgot the display of support, and a sense of responsibility was deepened between the heroic community and protecting the civil rights of the citizens that they protect.
