O'Neill
The center of the city’s Irish and German immigrant population in the early 20th century, O’Neill developed a working-class attitude that the community still proudly embraces today. While the diminishing presence of a middle class has somewhat hurt O’Neill in recent years, many of its citizens still form the backbone of industry in the city.
THE CRUSADER: Epicenter’s first news periodical, The Crusader has survived the newspaper implosion to remain the nation’s go-to source for happenings in the city. Joining The New York Times and others as a national fixture, The Crusader began life as a small community paper that specialized in relating travel, public health and other concerns that arose in the aftermath of superhuman conflicts. From there, The Crusader has developed a voice for the common man working and living in the shadow of larger than life figures, not afraid to question the public’s heroes or take a hard look at the unforeseen consequences of their actions. Not merely a critic, however, The Crusader’s editorial position has always been one of positive questions: how can things be better? The downside of this focus, however, is that The Crusader’s central office is a frequent target of supervillains, sometimes unhappy with negative press (or with positive press for those they hate), trying to shake a reporter down for a source, or looking to drum up a higher public profile in a very direct way.
UNMASKED CITIZEN RADIO: Starting out as a podcast network and growing into its own small multimedia empire comprising a YouTube Channel and talk radio, hosted by Evan Shiner. Shiner, a former Crusader editorial columnist, has become a favorite of his listener base (including many users of the V for Vigilance message boards) or the same freewheeling conspiracy theories that got him fired from The Crusader. Evan’s reasons for pushing his theories seem to be profit driven, but many have noted he tends to refrain from fingering villains in his rants. Some speculate this may be out of some form of affiliation, while most believe it’s simply because they would have less compunction with coming down to the station and confronting him directly over his words.
MARSTON HOSPITAL, EPICENTER: The oldest and most established center for healing in the city, Marston Hospital grew out of humble beginnings with an Irish Catholic nurse volunteer staff. Eventually coming under the supervision of a full-time medical staff, Marston Hospital would eventually grow into one of the largest medical facilities in the country.
This was mostly out of necessity. With the superhuman community booming in the 1960’s, doctors and nurses of Marston were called upon to treat conditions and cases that were previously completely unknown to modern medicine. Eventually, the hospital staff’s innovative techniques and practices put them in demand across the country, with their doctors serving as consultants to numerous cases all over the world. This notoriety came with great demands on the staff, but also came with a great deal of funding for the hospital. Currently, Marston Hospital stands at the forefront of superhuman medicine, as well as having cutting edge emergency facilities to deal with massive influxes of patients in times of widespread crisis.
