Jiminez Square

Located in the heart of the city, Jiminez Center is the heart of several communities within the city. Immigrants from South and Central America flocked to this part of the city in droves in the 1970’s, and the city’s LGBT community galvanized around Jiminez Center in the late 80’s and early 90’s. Now a thriving center of arts, culture and music, as well as some of the finest food in the city. Due to ties between various civil rights movements and the superhuman population, heroes may find themselves a bit more welcome in Jiminez Center than even in other parts of the city.   Curiously, however, Jiminez Center also has another sort of nightlife. For whatever reason, Jiminez Center has become the occult community’s chosen neighborhood. Self-styled sorcerers and sorceresses, magicians and occultists of all stripes operate out of this part of the city.   VERTIGO FESTIVAL: A four-day weekend event held every year, the Vertigo Festival serves both as a pride parade, and an occult festival. Parade-goers will sometimes dress as even more fantastical versions of superheroes in the parade, or as campy parodies of known villains. The occult aspect of the festival usually runs well after dark, and some revelers have reported being joined in festivities by supernatural creatures. Alcohol may or may not be a factor in those reports, however.   THE PROMETHEAN LODGE: A social club for the city’s occult elite, membership in the group requires sponsorship from two existing members. Neutral with regards to the hero/villain dynamic, the Promethean Lodge is focused on members sharing arcane knowledge in times of need, consulting one another on larger supernatural threats, or simply relaxing and socializing. In existence since the 1900’s, the Promethean Lodge may be the oldest organization within the city. Currently, the Head of the Lodge is occultist Erasmus Rune.   MERCADO DE LA SOMBRA: To those in the know, the “Shadow Market” is nothing but an interesting urban legend. To those with the inside track, however, Mercado de La Sombra is a brief window during which almost anything can be acquired. Organized by a small group of people, Mercado de La Sombra is a sort of pop-up market that will go up on a street, usually around midnight, and come down entirely before 2 a.m. During this period, merchants will sell anything from items scavenged from superhero battles, to books and artifacts that have been in their family for generations, to anyone who can meet their price. The secrets of the Mercado have been well-guarded, and DPA efforts to shut it down have produced nothing more than empty-handed embarrassment.   CATEDRAL DEL SANTUARIO: A spacious Cathedral, which began construction in the 1930’s and was completed in the 1950’s. Rumors hold that the Cathedral’s construction was bankrolled not just by the church, but by wealthy hero Halcon. In the 1960’s, the Catedral became known for providing sanctuary to superheroes, a place they could recover from the tolls that their work took on them, physically and spiritually. They will put up a hero in need with free room and board and protect their anonymity with generic white robes and masks during their time in common areas. While Catholic, the monks of del Santuario have been known to pull in specialists from other faiths and practices, where necessary. In the late 1980’s, del Santuario made the controversial decision to open their doors to supervillains in need as well, in hopes of mending their broken souls as well as their bodies, and many have willingly turned themselves in to law enforcement after some time at the Catedral.
