Claremont
A fairly well-off part of the city, Claremont is home to one of the most diverse economic and ethnic mixes of people anywhere in the city. Known both for having some of the most elite boarding schools in the entire country, as well as playing host to some of the upper crust’s more secret proclivities.
COCKRUM COMMUNITY COLLEGE: The local community college in the heart of Epicenter, Cockrum Community College has been in regular operation since the 1970’s. Cockrum draws students from all over the world, who come to Epicenter to eventually transfer out to larger universities or transfer straight into jobs at tech companies in Ellis Island or Atlas Park. One of the draws of Cockrum for many is the balance between high-quality education and rather lax standards for attendance; some students won’t see a classroom for weeks, but keep up with their work remotely, allowing for their grades to be unaffected by random robot attacks, supervillain outbursts or (in some cases) their own costumed nocturnal activities.
HANEY ACADEMY: One of the most well-regarded boarding schools on the planet, The Haney Academy accepts students from the 7th through 12th grades. Students are selected based on several factors, such as academic or athletic excellence, demographic needs, exceptionalism in community service … or the potential for superhuman abilities. The ‘superhuman abilities’ criteria is kept a secret, and it is actually a minority of Haney students who fit this bill. Lacking any kind of ‘superhero curricula,’ Haney Academy students with superpowers usually find themselves banded together in secret, under the off-the-record tutelage of a senior faculty member. If these students are discovered, however, they may end up facing expulsion, for the sake of maintaining the safety of their fellow (non-powered) students.
THE DANTE CLUB: The city’s premiere BDSM club. Members of the club range from the rich and bored, to the dedicated fetishist. Membership also includes prominent figures in city politics, and even a few members of the super-powered community. Membership in the Club is highly secretive, though thorough records are kept by the club’s president, Veronica Christian.
GOODMAN, LEIBER AND LEIBER: A legal firm, with central offices located right along the main strip in Claremont. Goodman, Leiber & Leiber is a law firm with an extensive history of representing superheroes in legal matters, usually civil ones. The firm has represented heroes in groundbreaking cases that established costumed identities as protected intellectual property, thwarting copycat criminals [The People vs. The Haunt, 1969], and won the landmark civil case that protected a superhero’s identity in court proceedings [Golden Glory v The Henchmen’s Local 151, 1971]. They even have an extensive branch that focuses on licensing law, making a great deal of money for both themselves and those their clients. For example, many say that Doc Marvel would never have become what he was, without the help of Goodman, Leiber & Leiber.
