Shinra Inc. began as a Shinra Manufacturing Works, specializing in weapons manufacture and supplying arms to nearly every corner of Ivalice. While profitable, the arms dealing section of Shinra would quickly be dwarfed by the discovery of the lifestream, ley-lines of energy that are part of the planet itself. Dubbing this new energy "mako", Shinra revolutionized Western Ivalice, providing electricity to the growing city of Midgar and rapidly expanding the company's influence and profits. Shinra used these new profits to take over the city of Midgar, establishing a corporate oligarchy and creating a massive exclusion zone around the city. Traffic into Shinra territory became tightly controlled, leaving most of the citizens of Midgar in poverty as they had to rely on Shinra for most of their goods.
Using Midgar as its base of operations, this massive conglomerate maintains a grip on Western Ivalice. Originally a small weapons manufacturer, the advent of mako energy has provided Shinra with unprecedented growth and profits. Currently, the company focuses on mako energy, arms development, urban planning, space and aeronautics, and food and pharmaceutical production.
