B'ran Iorwerth Maddox

The Clan Maddox fulfils the role of Warden of the Jar River whose seat is the walled hilltop town of Caer Maddox. B'ran Iorwerth Maddox’s shell keep and stone walled town is the final outpost standing between the Eorldom and the Altau lake. There are two abandoned outposts, with one having a small abandoned village within the walls of the bailey. The other is an actual border outpost along an abandoned trail to the Lake and swamps along its shores. The outpost tower has strong stone defenses and have not deteriorated over the 25+ years that they have been left to the wilderness. Originally manned and patrolled however with the population reduction due to the plague the village and the tower were left to the wilds and whomever may now occupy them.   The clan’s economy was largely coal and small deposits of iron with farming of pigs and sheep as well as grains. The iron is smelted locally and then fashioned into wire and chainmail rings, which in turn are, if not used locally, sold in export. The quality is middling largely due to B’ran Iorwerth being conservative and hiring only the lowest wages. The clan also has a quarry of red stone which is expanding to compensate for the iron running out. Maddox has also started to entice artists and other uses of the red stone such as architectural ornaments (he has invested in several of the Masons in Jaronne). The iron mines are becoming harder to mine due to the depth of the open pits and the seams beginning to run out. The coal mines have started to run underground and are more difficult to mine economically and safely since they have been mined for hundreds of years.   A side line of breeding Mules has recently started to become profitable. Originally these were bred for use in powering the water pumps, pulling wagons in the mine shafts and other animal powered needs. These have now made their way to the stables in Jaronne and increased interest in the use of mules for caravans has resulted in a new line of business for the B’ran. Throughout the spring and fall, a herd of mules (11-20) can be seen being driven to the stables of Jaronne.   Serr Iorwerth Maddox and his wife Eamag of clan Sinopa have three young children with the eldest a boy aged 15 well on his way to completing his knightly training while the middle child a daughter and the youngest a son are 13 and 12 years old.   Iorwerth is short and contemptible in stature and crippled in both haunches, caused when he fell from his mount during a jousting event. With a big head and hair that hangs down over his forehead and eyebrows, he looks almost wild. He is very dark in complexion, with little sunken brown eyes, a flat nose, and a snarling face. His beard runs almost to his forehead; his chin is receding, and his lips are always spread apart in an affected, false, and almost continual grin, which he very suitably used as a disguise. His neck is short, his back is humped, and his belly sticks out in front and his buttocks sticks at the back. His legs are crooked, and although his body is small his feet are huge.   Serr Iorwerth also retains the counsel of Beathag Finni (ML6), a witch of average capabilities, who’s specialties include spells of Command, Transmutation and Wards.   B’ran Iorweth is fearful of water and will rarely use the various ferries that cross the river in his holdings. Instead the B’ran will travel by wagon since riding a horse is extremely difficult for him.   He is forever scheming to either discredit or belittle the Reynard family and to find some excuse to promote his own family’s rights to the Fox tribe. Few support him but those that do, do so with a fever and a passion that is as strong as it is misplaced. Despite all of this his troops are some of the best trained and will support the Fox tribe and its allies above all else.   B’ran Maddox wears full chainmail (+4) as does his Elstash guard (+2), chainmail hauberk (+2) for the Ijeiss and Areiss, swords (+4) & lances (+4) for chief and his Elstash guards(+2), the Ijeiss and Areiss use axes and longbows respectively all of which are at least +1. Iorwerth Maddox has a council that includes a Druid (ML 7), a priest (PFF 40) and a Witch (ML 8). It is rumoured that he has used the Witch’s powers to try and overthrow the Reynards.
