And now for somthing different
611 AU, Flordag (1st day) in the Third Galend of Ebrild (day 166 of the year, 4th day of Chalice in the month of the Horse, Dragon Isles calendar)
Upon returning to Barsim the celebration of defeating a Wyvern family was short lived. The team had no more that shared the details of the battle and were about to share some of what they had seen of the portal in the Jars Forest when they were interrupted by the news of an attack on a church west of Militas. The team was asked to investigate.
The next morning they left Barsim and headed to Dronos. When they arrived the village was continuing its normal day to day however the church had a collapsed roof and signs of fire damage.
They asked about the village and eventually met the Bailiff who told of a night filled with terror for the people of the village. After identifying themselves as agents of the Eorl the Baliff told them that a group of 30 warriors swarmed the church and then killed everyone in side and tried to set fire to the building.
It didn't really catch but enough damage was done to cause the roof to collapse. The adventurers then asked to look inside the building. They were told its their lives and inside they went. After looking about using both mundane and magical means the team discovered that the only thing that was missing was taken from a broken glass case behind the pulpit. and that in the bottom of this case was a secret drawer that was large enough to contain something quite large but was empty.
The PCs then came outside and asked if they could talk to anyone that may have seen the warriors. Two villagers agreed to speak with them. One was a simple minded but capable Forester who described the group as having two leaders, one tall and with grey or blonde hair, the other was hunched over and had a large nose. A second person told a similar story but when pressed became agitated and afraid until they shared that the large nosed person actually looked more like an animal then a person.
Shortly after this interview a very large troop of men came into the village lead by men in armour and carrying the banners of the Orders of Bear, Blue Rose and Celeran (the fighting orders from Caer Militas). An initial strained conversation was eventually smoothed over once the Mage Gwen calmed down the concerns of the Grandmaster Ailpein Vervoir .
After talking for some while they were invited to join them for dinner and further conversations. They were left with a small group of guides (12 men) to ensure they found their way to Caer Militas.
During the evening meal nothing much was said yet after retiring to a meeting room the real questions were asked and some truths were shared by each of the groups. They Fighting orders were convinced that the Canus Cult had infiltrated the Eldanbarig (local brigands) and were responsible for the attacks. The Grandmaster also shared that they had a copy of the document as well as a detailed list of the components that had originally made up the Rosary of Beleryn. Wizard Gwen asked if she could see these documents and the Grandmaster allowed Gwen to look at the scroll with its 22 Psalms as they were known by the church.
After some time spent reading the scroll Gwen offered an alternative understanding of what these 22 Psalms really were. Gwen had just recently completed her studies of Old Dranconian as well as continuing her studies of the Tylwyth languages so caught some words in the scrolls that did not agree with the Church's thinking. Gwen proposed that the scrolls were actually a ritual spell to both summon and bind a portal. The church had interpreted them as a prayer asking for mortals to become closer to their God Beleryn.
With this new information the Archbishop Sayer Baynton was summoned and Gwen reviewed her findings with the Archbishop, who was a scholar himself. He asked several questions of Gwen and then abruptly left the room and asked form the to meeting during breakfast.
At breakfast the Archibishop shared that some in the church had shared Gwen's understanding but that it did not make sense for terroritst to steal this device since all of the parts were scattered all over the realms of the Dragon Reaches and that there was no portal to summon or control. To which the PCs revealed what they had seen in the Gar marches and their theory of was was corrupting the Jars forest.
The Archbishop quickly had a Document of Writ drawn up and encouraged them to quickly travel to Daranmax and ask the Holy Revorn for permission to gather the gemstones/holy relics from the other churches outside of Urtind for safe keeping. They head off towards Jarrone with their Letter and a guard of 4 cavalrymen. Their trip through the Jars forest is uneventful until them meet a caravan who tells them of a church that was robed just two days earlier.
They agreed that they must quickly continue their journey and forego sleep to continue riding through the night and the morning. They arrived in the village of Burana and see a village going about its normal daily routine. And when they go into the church nothing seems out of place however the Priest is distraught. He tells the team that when he opened the church three days ago he discovered the holy relic had been stolen and that he had nothing more to say.
The team then continued their travel into Jarrone since there were two churches close to Jarrone and they would approach the Bishop their for help to safeguard the relics. With the help of the city guards they quickly came upon the Church of Urto and the Bishop. After speaking with Bishop Candace Tatee she bid them to await lunch and to catch some sleep since her morning was busy and could not be interrupted. After sitting down to a table filled with vegetables, water and no meat the party awaited the Bishop. almost an hour later the Bishop arrived and was very distraught, it appears that another Church had a holy relic stolen and she beseeched the team to help the church in is darkest hour. When asked for guards or solders the Bishop suggested that they go seek the help of the Seneschal, who was helpful by providing provisions and a letter of introduction but not much else since the Eorl was on patrol with the whole Warband.
While the provisions were gathered the Wizard Gwen went to the College of Light where Gwen met Principal Thorleye who had several cats on his desk and a pile of books that appeared to be on the topic of astral projection and portals. He thanked Gwen about the information she shared and then suggested that they need to talk in depth about portals and such when she had more time. The Principal then bid Gwen farewell and best of luck and then continued to go through his books apparently looking for something.
The adventurers meet up outside the College of Light and were to head out of town in the hope they would catch the thieves before they stole the next relic.
