Dwarves are a short and stocky species, that evolved for life underground in hills and mountains, where they inhabit both natural and artificial tunnel networks. Their compact, powerful frames are perfectly adapted for moving through cramped spaces and enduring the hard labour of mining and construction. Over generations, their anatomy has been shaped by the unique demands of subterranean living. Dwarves are typically very pale, their skin depigmented by their lack of exposure to sunlight. They possess large noses, an adaptation to drawing in oxygen from the often poor-quality air found underground. Their large, sensitive eyes enhance their low-light vision, allowing them to navigate and work effectively in the darkness of their underground homes. To cope with dusty environments, they have developed thick mucous membranes in their airways, reducing the health impacts of constant dust exposure. Additionally, their iconic bushy beards and moustaches serve a practical purpose, acting as natural dust filters—though they require regular cleaning.

Life underground has also led to adaptations for low oxygen levels. Dwarves have a reduced need for oxygen, granting them resilience in poorly ventilated areas, and better endurance in combat. They also possess the ability to hold their breath for extended periods, aiding survival in toxic environments. Dwarves primarily inhabit natural and self-made cave systems, as well as remote valleys surrounded by mountains, where they mine coal, iron, precious metals, and gemstones. These valleys are accessible only through cave systems, leading to the widespread but intentionally perpetuated belief that dwarves live exclusively underground—a misconception they find advantageous to maintain. Generations of determined excavation have honed dwarves into master miners, their expertise unparalleled in the world.

Their underground cities, or warrens, are engineering marvels, carved directly into the living rock of mountains and deep caverns. These sprawling settlements bring many families together for mutual defence and collective child-rearing, with depths reaching several hundred meters, and even deeper in regions with natural caves or robust rock like granite. Grand halls supported by elaborately carved pillars depict their history, deities, and legends, while tunnels twist through fissures, connecting bustling marketplaces, humming forges, and sturdy homes carved into cavern walls. Often, the largest cavern is dedicated to a central hall from which leaders govern and ceremonies are conducted.

Entrances to these colonies are strategically aligned north-south with small towers to harness sunlight. This design warms the air inside, creating pressure differentials that ensure efficient ventilation. Tunnels stretch from ground level to the deepest parts of the system, drawing in fresh air and expelling stale air. Chimneys carved into the rock vent smoke from high-temperature smithing, an essential aspect of dwarven culture, as any dwarf will attest that a burning forge is the heart of a city. Water is sourced from underground rivers or reservoirs and is channelled through aqueducts that also power machinery.

Dvergr queens, massive and ancient matriarchs, reside deep within the heart of each dwarven hold, serving as both leaders and life-givers. Their wisdom, accumulated over centuries, guides the clans with unwavering authority, and their presence is seen as the living embodiment of the hold’s strength and unity. In return, the dwarves dedicate themselves to the queens’ care, constructing vast chambers to house them and providing sustenance from their subterranean farms. The queens, in turn, produce not only offspring to sustain the population but also emit a subtle psychic aura that fosters the dwarves’ hive-like cohesion and focus. This connection is sacred, and the queens are protected at all costs, for their loss would spell the decline of the entire hold.

Toward predators or surface threats, dwarves are cautious and strategic, relying on traps and fortifications to deter intruders, resorting to relentless, tactical combat when necessary. Their treatment of predated species and resources is pragmatic and sustainable, ensuring long-term balance in their ecosystem.

Unlike humans, dwarves are stoic and deliberate, conserving energy in line with their low metabolism. Communication is succinct, often supplemented by vibrational cues, and they maintain a heightened sensitivity to environmental changes, fostering vigilance critical to their survival underground. This blend of unity, strategy, and adaptability defines their unique societal and behavioural traits.

Over time, living away from sunlight has diminished their pigmentation, resulting in a pale complexion, while their night vision has improved, allowing them to navigate the darkness with ease.
