The Cult of the Mother
Though there may be many religions by this name (The Mother is a very popuplar saint), the particular Cult of the Mother of which Aster Margotsdottir is an apprentice priestess is a very small order of traveling priestesses which operates in [region]. In one small former-feudal state, the local lord sponsored a small order of priestesses to travel from village to village performing minor miracles for the villagers there, such as blessing births, crops, festivals, and the like. These 5-6 priestesses served a region of perhaps 20 villages at their peak, though these days their numbers are dwindling.
The local mythology states that the Mother was originally from this region. She was chosen by Aesis in days past to carry and birth his avatar, St. Keltar the Defender, who defeated a horde of demons in Aesis' name. In the seven years before and after she bore this son, there were many miracles in the town where she lived. During this 14 year period, all births both human and livestock were healthy, the harvests were extremely bountiful, and she also bore four daughters. It was said that every living thing she touched was free from disease for the rest of its life. She became the ruler of the area in the period after this, and she created an era of peace and unity in the area through her generosity and fairness. She ruled in an unorthodox way, traveling from village to village throughout her kingdom, delivering her just rule to those who needed it most. After her death, her four daughters continued to travel throughout the land to help people in remote areas, which is supposedly continued to this day as the Cult of the Mother, delivering the gifts of the Mother to the people who need it most.
After all feudal land was siezed by the new Republic, the cult's sponsorship was technically taken over by the Order of the Noble Saints of Aelin. They have sent some money, but previously the lord was providing more resources than this, including temporary housing at his estate when needed and allowances for food, clothing, and traveling expenses, and the order has not been delivering the same level of benefits. At the time of the transition, there were four practicing priestesses, but since then, two have retired (including Devona's mother Mara), and one passed away (Aster's mother Margot), leaving only a single full priestess (a very young woman named Helena who was only recently ordained by the retired Elaine) and one mostly-trained apprentice (Aster herself).
After the death of her mother, Aster needed to be ordained as a full priestess in order to practice. Not wanting to bother the new priestess Helena who was only just ordained herself a year or so before, she ventured to the Capital to track down the Order of the Noble Saints of Aelin, since the Cult of the Mother was now technically a branch of this church. She hoped that they would be able to ordain her so that she could return home and continue to practice the tradition she was brought up in.
