Burlet Seer

Burlet Seer or The Oracles of Wharkarwa

In the lands of Wharkarwa, few professions are as revered or as elusive as that of the Burlet Seer. These gifted individuals dedicate their lives to interpreting the welfare, behavior, and subtle cues of the royal Burlong, the majestic creatures whose existence is deeply intertwined with the fate of the realm. To the people of Wharkarwa, the Burlong are more than mere beasts; they are living omens, their physical and emotional states reflecting the health of the land and the virtue of its ruler.

The Path to Becoming a Burlet Seer

The journey to mastery is arduous, and few possess the innate sensitivity required to even begin. Aspiring seers must first prove their worth by spending years in the service to the royal flock, learning the intricacies of Burlong behavior, their telepathic murmurs, and the symbolism of their vibrant plumage. Only those who can discern meaning in the slightest shift in a Triarch’s feathers, or interpret the resonance of its calls, are deemed worthy of advancement.

The Art of Interpretation

A Burlet Seer’s duties are manifold:

• Reading the Colours: The colours and condition of a Burlong mars fur or a Burlong Triarch’s feathers are believed to mirror the moral and political climate of the realm. Dull or molting feathers may foretell hardship, while radiant hues signify prosperity.

• Deciphering Calls: The deep, resonant vocalizations of the Burlong carry hidden messages. A Seer must distinguish between a call of contentment and one of warning.

• Telepathic Communion: Only the most skilled Seers can attune themselves to the faint telepathic emanations of the Burlong, gleaning flashes of insight or prophetic visions.

The Weight of Responsibility

The Burlet Seer’s word holds immense power, capable of swaying public court decisions, declaring the legitimacy of a ruler, or foretelling calamity. Yet this influence comes at a cost. A misreading could lead to disgrace or worse, if the interpretation is deemed treasonous. Many Seers live in self-imposed seclusion, guarding their insights until the moment demands revelation.

A Rare and Sacred Calling

Few Wharkarwans ever achieve the title of Burlet Seer, and those who do are both respected and feared. To stand before a royal Burlong and hear its truth is to hold the heartbeat of the nation in one’s hands a privilege few dare to claim.

False Burlet Seers

Despite the reverence for Burlet seers, there are those whom would try and pretend to know the craft they are called the Gossip mongers they are the false Burlet Seers of Wharkarwa

In the shadow of the true Burlet Seers, those rare disciplined interpreters of the royal Burlong exists a far more common and far less noble breed: the would-be seers, charlatans, and rumor-peddlers who exploit the mystique of the Burlong for personal gain. These pretenders lack the genuine sensitivity to read the creatures, but they make up for it with theatrical flair, half-truths, and a knack for weaving scandalous tales.

The Telltale Signs of a False Seer

1. Overly Dramatic Pronouncements While true seers speak with measured gravity, false ones thrive on spectacle. They declare every molted feather a "dire omen" and every Burlong call a "prophecy of doom (or glory, depending on their audience)."

2. Frequent Tavern Haunts Rather than watching and interpreting the royal flock, these pretenders hold court in alehouses and taverns, where they "interpret" Burlong behaviour for coin or favour. Their insights grow more extravagant with each drink.

3. Convenient Visions Their "prophecies" always align suspiciously with the latest court gossip. If the king is unpopular, suddenly the Burlong's feathers "darken with discontent." If a noble rises in favour, the creatures "sing their approval."

4. No Telepathic Ability The surest way to spot a fraud? A true Seer can sometimes go days without speaking, lost in observation of the court Burlongs. A false one never stops talking.

The Damage They Cause

While some dismiss them as harmless fools, their rumours can stir unrest. A whispered "omen" about the Burlong rejecting a royal heir might spark whispers of illegitimacy. The worst among them even sell "blessed" Burlong feathers (often plucked from common birds and painted) to the gullible. This is highly illegal, and are heavily punished. How True Seers Deal With Them Genuine Burlet Seers view these imposters with a mix of disdain and pity. Some ignore them, knowing their lies will unravel. Others particularly those in royal service may publicly discredit them, exposing their falsehoods through true communion with the Burlong.

A Cautionary Note for Aspiring Seers

In Wharkarwa, the path of the Burlet Seer is one of patience, humility, and genuine connection. Those who seek only fame or influence will find themselves mocked as "Feather-Mumblers" a title no one recovers from.
