Personal history
Born during a winter storm in 709, Birger Gagenstad was the 7th child in his family. Much is unknown about the Gangestad family, or their home at the base of the mountains since he refuses to speak about it.
What is known is that his 3 older brothers and father were killed while out on a raid in 724. His 4 sisters died from disease with his mother early in 725 when he was 16 years old. The next few years were a mystery as no one remembers seeing him until 727 when he showed up at the Jarls house and volunteered for the Spring raids.
Over the next 10 years he became one of Jarl Frode's lead raid captains. He successfully led the longest expedition raid, a period of 8 months of sailing and raiding along the Spine Coast in 735.
Birger's became Jarl after he slew Jarl Erik Frode in ritual combat in 737. What initially started as a disagreement on raiding during the spring of 738 grew into a bitter fight between the two warriors, ending in Birger challengeing the Jarl for leadership. The fight between them is still whispered in hushed tones, and the stories say it took them a day and a night to complete the combat. No matter how long it took, at the end of the fight, Birger stood triumphant and became the new Jarl at the age of 28.
Since then he has been a steady hand that has seen Holl and the Jarldom of Holl grow significantly in status and land during his time as Jarl. Many of the other Jarloms respect and fear him, placing the Jarldom of Holl amongst the most powerful Jarldoms in Enga.
Education
Little is known about his upbringing and education. He is a master with the axe, and an accomplished sailor.
Employment
Birger spent 10 years on raids for the Jarldom, before becoming Jarl himself.
