The Lower City

Geography

Several kilometres below the area that most races inhabit, the Upper City, is the Lower City, also known as 'The Old City', which is something of a misnomer since both the upper and lower portions are roughly of the same age as far as anyone can tell. However, marked differences between the two set them apart, with the lower city being much cooler and tightly packed in many areas.

The further down one travels the smaller and more narrow spaces become, parts of the Lower City are a rat run of corridors and tunnels, so it is no wonder that the Vahltun typically reside amongst them. The Lower City receives daylight, but most areas are perpetually in shade, save for a few sporadic shafts of light that reach down. Thus the climate is cooler, and owing to the spread of fine mists from the cascading waterfalls above in the Upper City, it is often humid and the change in temperature and humidity is reflected in the flora and fauna that reside here.

In some areas within the megastructure ancient waterways have carved out large cavernous spaces through the ruins, in other areas scenes of what appear to be signs of great destruction, with large open interiors containing marks of battles of ages old, can be found.

Ecosystem

The climate is much cooler and more humid as well as being largely in shade. This lead to moss rather than grass being the dominant lifeform at this level. Small shrubs and bushes do grow, but trees are rare and find it difficult to grow here though it has been known to happen. Owing to the humidity, fungi are also quite common amongst these levels, particularly in areas around settlement where organic materials and waste can be found. All this taken into account, organic life is still relatively sparse owing to the limited food conditions available.
