Sandstone Surveyors
Lore
Founded in 1067, these military geologists are part surveyor and part ranger.
House Ironhelm has always been interested in finding new places to settle, and the Sandstone surveyors are now how they formally establish colonies. This group of geologists are trained to find all manner of useful and valuable minerals. The surveys don’t stop there, they are also training in engineering to plan roads, bridges, mine openings and defences for the colony.
Sometimes valuable minerals are found, but there is no effective way to get them out of the earth, so the surveyors move on.
Over the past 150 years, multiple expeditions have been sent to the Hill Giant Mountains , the Wyvern Mountains and the Twin Peak Mountains , but the surveyors have yet to be able to successfully build a permanent settlement - each previous being abandoned or lost after a few years.
These surveyors are trained to fight the untamed wilderness alone or on small groups, they would fair very poorly in a pitched battle. Dispite this they have been used to great effect in gorilla warfare.

Ranks
None of the engineering disciplines view themselves as superior (though individual dwarves might). They view themselves as part of a brotherhood, and when engineers of different disciplines meet, they will often disappear together to discuss things for “only civilized minds”
Precious Metals
Studying the formation and mining techniques to mine precious metals like gems, gold, silver and exotic materials. These engineers focus on how to extract materials without damage.
Oreman
Mining experts that focus on mundane material extraction at a volume needed to support cities. This could include deep shaft mines or open pit mines.
Building Engineer
Also known as siege engineers, these dwarves are focused on how to build and how to distroy manmade structures. They are just as likely to be found designing a metal smith forge as a battering ran to knock down the walls of enemies.
Cartographer
Map makers and surveyors. Unlike the other disciplines, these dwarves work in small (4) to midsize (30) to survey and map the continent. Sometimes these are at direction of a noble house. Other times it’s to scope new settlement or mine placements.
