Fred is highly articulate and, despite his lower class upbringing, made good use of his Seven Valley's Public Training. Going into Private Training for Structural Engineering, he was well equipped to help Nikki maintain the Nereidia when the time came.
Employment
Before the circumstances that led to his meeting Nikki, Fred was working for a state research facility maintaining the airlocks and performing generalized repairs. After those events, Nikki and he began operating a light transport ship, with him as first mate. His responsibilities on the Nereidia are usually within his skill set, but his understanding of Fusion engineering isn't satisfactory to help the pilot maintain the reactor, nor is he well enough educated in orbital mechanics to plot courses professionally. Despite all of this, he's been able to handle himself, and his natural propensity for history and culture make him a powerful negotiator.
Morality & Philosophy
Very stanch Bahai believer, Fred believes himself religiously obligated not to get neural implants outside of the minimum necessary prosthetics to maintain his bodily functions and remain able. This makes pilotry and advanced engineering a difficult task, but his reputation as trustworthy and that of his integrity as being above reproach more than makes up for it.
