Life, Death
After they left the Temple that night, pair rejoined Alfgar outside, and went to the Inn. Algar and Roderic rented a room for the night, where Alfgar got himself a short rest, and Roderic stayed awake to wake his companion in the predawn in hopes of intercepting the priest at dawn services to learn more of the children's fate.
Meanwhile, Leutgar trudged his way back into the woods on the far side of the leat, returning to the site of the fight to spend his night butchering the boar, both sows and their 5 piglets.
As cocks began to crow in the distance, Roderic woke Alfgar, and they then went to the temple, catching the end of short service, and watching as Priest Heremon blessed and talked with his congregants, before once more retreating through the door. Alfgar banged on the door, demanding to see the children, while Roderic played mediator as best he might. During this discussion, Alfgar and Roderic managed to tell the monks that Alfgar was the young boy's uncle... this would come back to bite them later.
The two then returned to the inn for breakfast, during which Rendle stopped at their table to hand over a bag of gold and a “job done”... much to the confusion of the party members, as they had not gotten around to confirming that the thieves had been dealt with... so far as they knew.
After breaking their fast, with Roderic in possession of the unopened bag of gold, the two decided to walk up towards the combat site in search of Leutgar, whom they found, more by sound than sight, as he struggled through the woods hauling a makeshift travois laden with meat.
Alfgar and Roderic made their way back to retrieve the rest of the butchered meat, and carried it back to rejoin Leutgar on the walk back to town.
In town, the trio bartered the meat to the innkeep, arriving at a result of 20gold and a weeks stay in 3 inn rooms after some bargaining by Leutgar.
Edwen joined them as they talked at a table, excitedly telling them that she had heard they had completed their last job, and she had a new one for them if they wanted... looking for the camps of the bandits that had been preying on the roads between Bethencourt, Hewe and Martel. When asked how she knew they had completed the job, she informed them with some confusion that the culprits had been executed at sunrise... however it appeared that she did not know that the culprits had been children. She was then observed to have an argument with Rendel behind the counter, before running out the back door of the inn.
In exhaustion and heartache, the trio retreated to their newly rented rooms for the week... after Leutgar was made to bathe... settling into rooms 15, 17 and 19 to rest.
From his window, Roderic observed Edwen in the inn-yard, sitting in the dirt, apparently crying.
He went down to talk to her, eventually asking her both to train him in first aid, and to help him while he performed minor surgery on himself... unsuccessfully... Then went back upstairs to join his companions in slumber.
This, unfortunately, was when Alfgar's choice to tell the monks he was the child's uncle came home to roost. A banging on his door in the evening woke him from sleep to find two guards wanting to question him as to this relation.
After Alfgar spouting a rambling tirade of incoherent nonsense, the guards grew frustrated, and permitted him to wake one of his comrades who might be better able to answer the questions.
Leutgar was able to confirm some of the information, but not enough of the right bits... and the two of them were ordered not to leave town while the guards went to Rye to question those who must know Alfgar's family personally... when Leutgar attempted to protest needing to stay in town, they were informed that it was either stay in the town until the guards returned, or accompany them on the two to three day trip to Rye and back under guard.
Meanwhile Roderic slept on.
