Laws of Kyawas
Laws of the Devjat
Many of the laws are dependent on a person's jat, their social class.
Majjat refers to those of Jat Izem and below. Bajjat refers to the opposite, Jat Taos and above. Similarly, a person who is two jat above another person is Tavbajjat to them. A person two jat below another is Tavmajjat to them.
The jat are listed below.
Jat Name | Category | |
---|---|---|
1 | Primas | Bajjat |
2 | Avos | Bajjat |
3 | Taos | Bajjat |
4 | Izem | Majjat |
5 | Kresh | Majjat |
6 | Nama | Majjat |
- Majjat and below cannot own land. Jat Taos can own land, but cannot rent it out to others (personal use only).
- Majjat cannot own guns or runewoven weapons. Jat Kresh and Jat Nama cannot own any weapons.
- Majjat cannot travel freely outside of the sectors in which they live. They can still travel, but only by the express permission of the Order of Records. Jat Nama and Jat Kresh may not travel outside their sector without orders from someone of a higher Jat.
- Jat Kresh and below cannot create or run businesses, they can only be employees.
- Jat Nama cannot choose their own jobs, they are permanantly burdened by the Order of Records.
- Only Jat Primas may become a mahar.
- Majjat cannot become the head of official organizations (such as the Arjei, the Bureau of Audits, or the Guardians of the Realm).
- Majjat cannot become officers in the military.
- A person cannot marry someone tavbajjat to them.
- A person must show proper respect to someone tavbajjat to them.
As a general rule, crimes increase in severity when done to someone tavbajjat.

Categories of Crimes and Law Enforcement
Summary Offenses
Summary offenses are lesser crimes, such as theft, blasphemy, or disrepecting a tavbajjat. Punishments for summary crimes cannot exceed one month is prison, a fine of 5,000 sv, or three lashes. People accused of summary offenses can be tried and sentenced by a council of three or more people that are tavbajjat to the offender, or a single arj (or other person of authority such as an auditor).
Indictable Offenses
Indictable offenses are great crimes such as murder, treason, or soul mutilation. A person accused of an indictable offense must be brought before a council of arj, or a single auditor to be tried and sentenced. Punishments for indictable offenses are usually extreme. From execution to descension to hard labor in the rift mines. These punishments can be anything and are really up to the people sentencing. Abusing the authority afforded the tavbajjat is also an indictable offense.
Trials are fairly common, but are mostly done for the majjat. Arjei will come together to deliberate on the correct course of action in a trial and make a collective ruling.
