Kobold

Kobolds are a race of underground-dwelling dragonkin, though many 'higher' dragons would figuratively and literally look down on that classification. Kobolds are fanatics that worship a higher master, often after that master has long passed away. Being very aware of their height and build disadvantages against other races, but not as mechanically gifted as goblins, Kobolds have become masters of traps. It is not their fanatical drive that makes assaulting a kobold cave dangerous, it is their intuitive knowledge of the perfect trap that will make even a seasoned adventurer think twice before moving on a kobold's, home turf.

Basic Information

Anatomy

Kobolds are as tall as a human ten year old. The females are on average eight centimeters smaller than the males. Kobolds have a draconian appearance. They have scaly skin, hunched backs and very long snouts with two pronounced fangs at the end. They are bipedal, with two arms and legs. They have five fingers and toes. Their legs are curved back like a goat's and they have long, broad feet that are a cross between talons and a hopping mouse's back legs.

Genetics and Reproduction

Kobolds are driven by their master and the good of the clutch. Their eggs are able to be easily 'frozen' in cold climes, halting the gestation process. If clan numbers are low or there is to be a great battle in the future, kobolds will begin to reproduce and store eggs in cold conditions for the future, bringing them into warmth when they need to hatch. Kobolds do not mate for life. Females lay eggs in the warmest part of the nest. There, they are protected with guard mothers and traps as well as numerous hidden escape routes. A long, winding route wrapping back to the start of the nest can be found in this chamber. At the end of this route is a chamber for the 'frozen' eggs as well as ventilation holes, keeping them in stasis until needed. Eggs are activated once they are warmed to temperatures moderately hotter than room, temperature. Eggs incubate for a short period of 2 weeks. When a kobold reaches 1 year of age, it is considered a child. At 9, it is fully mature.

Ecology and Habitats

Kobolds live in well lit parts of caves that they keep dry and warm. Kobolds use various materials found in and around caves to line their walls. This is most often the skin of various furred animals, wood gemstones and dry earth. Kobolds will also cultivate massive earthtrees to produce water for their clan and under-fungus to produce food.   A kobold cave will consist of a variety of chambers each with a specific usage. These chambers are often pocked with traps known to the habitant clan. All clans will have a brood chamber, a nexus, a fungus farm and earthtree garden.

Dietary Needs and Habits

Kobolds are omnivores. Though they may once have eaten exclusively meat as their mouth and jaw strength belay, Kobolds prefer a more reliable diet of under-fungus.

Biological Cycle

Kobolds have an extremely isolated life cycle in relation to their surroundings. Kobolds stay away from the deep undermine where seasons change, preferring to stay just above it's surface. Kobolds are able to easily manage the availability of food and drinkable water unlike most races. Kobolds instead dictate their life cycle based on the wishes of their master first, and secondly their instincts. If a clan is directed to go to war, it will begin to breed and store eggs

Additional Information

Perception and Sensory Capabilities

Despite being cave dwellers, Kobolds cannot see in the dark. They rely on a hat bearing a candle to see. They have beady eyes of dull colours that shine if illuminated. They rely on their eyes and keen sense of smell to perceive the world. Their hearing and other senses are less than that of a standard human.
