Names

Names are an important part of the cultures in Elgis, though the specifics often vary depending upon location.   In the Mavanish Empire, first names are given at birth by the mother, and the last name is a title or titles that the individual can label themselves with, though they can also be given those titles, positive or negative, by those around them. Common examples of last names in those regions are Job titles (Aru Hunter), or titles of honor (Remi Warrior). It is not uncommon for a person to give themselves fanciful or noble titles, though social pressures and public shaming will tend to cause these people to revert that last name.   Elves have three different names, a birth name, a formal name, and a personal name. The birth name is chosen by the parents and used by everyone, formal or informal, and is abandoned in favor of the formal and personal name, chosen by the individual when they reach adolescence. The formal name is used in formal settings or by strangers or those not close enough to use the personal name. The personal name is used by family and close friends. Using the wrong name in the wrong context is incredibly rude and taboo and is potentially relationship ruining.
