Wizard King/Queen
Qualifications
To be eligible for consideration, one must have attained the title of Ace Maygus and served in that position for at least ten years. While not a strict requirement, it is highly recommended that candidates have demonstrated mastery over multiple schools and elements beyond their own specialization.
Appointment
When the time comes to appoint a new ruler either through the abdication or death of the current Wizard King or Queen a succession trial is held.
Any Ace Maygus wishing to stand for succession must undergo a series of public tests designed and overseen by the remaining Aces. These trials assess not only magical prowess but also leadership, wisdom, and moral integrity.
After the trials, voting occurs in three separate bodies:
- The Council of Aces
- The Overseers
- The Citizens of the kingdom
Ceremony of Ascension
When a new monarch rises to lead the Kingdom of Turalance, a grand ceremony is held at the very heart of the Grand Octarium. This sacred ritual takes place in the central hall—the first building ever constructed within the Academe—still used to this day for momentous events and ancient rites. The vast chamber is adorned with banners of the Eight Elements and the Nine Schools of Magic, each positioned behind its respective Ace Maygus or an appointed representative if the seat is currently vacant. Together, they form a great circle of seventeen, surrounding an enormous ritual sigil engraved into the marble floor. This sigil an intricate mandala of symbols, runes, and formulas represents every magical discipline within the kingdom. Only those with the highest mastery of the arcane arts can fully comprehend its design. At its center stands the new monarch, dressed in simple ceremonial robes with one sleeve removed the bare arm chosen for the ritual marking. As the rite begins, the Aces chant in unison, their voices weaving through ancient magical tongues. One by one, each steps forward to inscribe a glowing formula upon the monarch’s arm and hand, bestowing a boon from their respective school or element. With each mark, the monarch becomes further bound to the kingdom, their mana harmonizing with the ley lines that run through Turalance itself. When the final mark is drawn, the ritual circle flares with silver light. The glowing sigils upon the monarch’s arm cool and harden into etched silver markings, a permanent symbol of their bond to the realm. This ritual grants the new Wizard King or Queen a number of blessings heightened affinity for every school and element of magic, along with a deeper connection to the land and its people. They can sense disturbances or presences within a sixty foot radius and can send messages to any Ace Maygus or Overseer without the need for spellcasting. Following the ceremony, the monarch dons formal royal attire and begins the Month of Procession—a journey across all major cities of the continent. During this time, the new ruler is introduced to the people and celebrates their unity through acts of magic and joy. When the current Wizard King, Xander Penthragoth, held his procession, he enchanted the skies with vivid illusions—flowers blooming in the air, rainbows dancing across the clouds, and even playful shadow-dragons soaring overhead. His kindness and sense of wonder turned the ceremony into a festival of laughter and light, earning him the affectionate title of “The Smiling King of Spells.”Responsibilities
The Wizard King or Queen serves as both head of state and archmage of the realm, responsible for:
Overseeing the governance of the kingdom in coordination with the Aces and Overseers.
Managing large scale magical and infrastructural projects.
Maintaining diplomatic relations with foreign nations.
Leading the Arcane Army during times of war or crisis.
Ensuring the continued advancement of magical knowledge and education within Turalance.
Benefits
The position grants unparalleled access to the kingdom’s arcane and material resources, as well as the respect and loyalty of peers across all magical disciplines.
The Wizard King or Queen is afforded vast libraries, laboratories, and research privileges unmatched anywhere else in the world. However, the burden of leadership often leaves little time for personal study or research, as the responsibilities of ruling demand near-constant attention.
Grounds for Removal/Dismissal
In the event of abuse of power, corruption, or ethical misconduct, the Council of Aces has the authority to initiate proceedings for removal.
First, the Aces collectively vote to suspend the monarch’s powers. A formal tribunal is then held before an Assembly of Overseers, during which evidence is presented by both parties.
If it is proven that the Wizard King or Queen has acted with corruption, moral decay, or misuse of authority, and a majority of Overseers vote for removal, the monarch is stripped of title, exiled from the kingdom, and permanently barred from holding any governmental or academic office within Turalance.
