Familiar

Familiars are living manifestations of magical energy, born when a spellcaster shapes their own power into a creature that can help channel, bind, or otherwise serve their magic. Wizard, witches, and other arcane practitioners often perform a ritual known as the Calling a spell not to simply “find” a familiar, but to locate the magical tether their own essence naturally seeks.

This tether might anchor to an elemental current, a school of magic, a force within the world, or even something far stranger a thread leading into one of the realms of the Metaverse. It could just as easily be a fragment of raw mana itself, drifting in that infinite expanse.

Once found, this tether fuses with the caster’s magic, shaping itself into a living creature that reflects the caster’s nature. In most cases, the bond is to a native element of Elema, forming a familiar in the likeness of an animal from the mortal world. However, if the tether reaches into an Metaverse realm, the familiar may inherit traits from that realm granting it unusual appearances and abilities, sometimes bizarre to mortal eyes.

Regardless of form, familiars share physical characteristics and magical echoes of their realm of origin, along with unique powers tied to their caster. The bond is deep and mutual, growing stronger as the spellcaster hones their craft. Over time, the caster may discover hidden talents in their familiar small miracles and strange magical quirks unlocked through shared growth and experience.
