As with most worlds throughout the varied forms of existence, Eldrékkar is one torn asunder by conflict.
Eldrékkar was once a relatively peaceful world with vast swathes of settled regions and stunning vistas. However, in the third century following unification, the world grey heavy as a yet-unknown event brough a fog upon the world. At first it crept over the horizons and settled in valleys, seeming to come simply from the sea but, the longer it remained, the more it became clear that this was not simply a mist. It darkened the land and twisted the life that seemed most vulnerable. Simple animals became complex predators and even some plants themselves began to twist into monstrosities.
Nights seemed forever darker and the days were little more than twilight hours leading to the event being called "The Shadowing." A group of Humans began blaming the occurrence on the more mystically aligned species: Dragonborn, Tieflings, even Elves and Dwarves. Anything that was not Human began to draw their ire.
The only places that were spared from such pandemonium were the Walled Cities scattered about the world.
