The Obsidian Towers
Last stop of civilization before entering Terrenburn Grove
The Obsidian Towers were erected during the Revolution of the Oppressed, as an early warning system against the dwarvish army. However, the simple stone towers were easily overrun shortly before the Siege of Karlstad in 620 2A.
Shortly after the war ended, the towers were rebuilt out of obsidian, one of the longest-lasting and hardest stones, harvested from the Iron Mountains. The towers have since stood for the past several hundred years, offering a final point of civilized rest before travelers continue on their journies. There are two towers, about 100 miles from each other - the East Tower sits on the main road between Karlstad and Taldor. The West Tower is the last stop for travelers heading over the Broken Pass toward Kidras or down to Southreach (and then, usually, continuing down to Nûmdor).
The Towers are overseen by the Olyram, the standing army of Aethel. They watch over several small outposts in the realm, but the Obsidian Towers is the most prominent posting, other than the city of Karlstad.
