Identify

Effect

5th Edition
You choose one object that you must touch throughout the casting of the spell. If it is a magic item or some other magic-imbued object, you learn its properties and how to use them, whether it requires attunement to use, and how many charges it has, if any. You learn whether any spells are affecting the item and what they are. If the item was created by a spell, you learn which spell created it. This spell does not tell whether an item is cursed.   If you instead touch a creature throughout the casting, you learn what spells, if any, are currently affecting it.

This is a rare option

Somatic Components

The caster begins by arranging the material components—a fine pearl and a small goblet of wine—into a shallow dish or ritual basin. Over the course of the minute-long casting, they grind the pearl into powder, then stir it slowly into the wine using the feather. Once fully mixed, the caster raises the goblet in both hands, breathes a single word of invocation, and drinks the mixture in one motion. As the final sip is consumed, they place their hand over the object and close their eyes in concentration.

Ritual

To cast Identify as a ritual, the caster must first draw a simple circle of powdered chalk or salt around the item to be identified. They then lay out the materials necessary for the spell and begin softly chanting the verbal component in repetition as they grind the pearl and prepare the drink. Remaining in contact with the object with one hand, they must drink the wine, then remain kneeling for the remainder of the ritual. Upon the final moments as the wine begins to work into their body, they must speak out the verbal component with conviction, finishing the spell without putting strain on their magical reserves.
