General Summary
Players Involved:
• Opal (Level 7 Warforged Monk)
• Ingos (Level 7 Wizard)
• Zuzun (Level 7 Tiefling Sorcerer)
• Valkyra (Level 9 Leonin Barbarian Fighter)
• Enaril Eveningfall (Level 9 Twilight Cleric)
The charismatic bard Lorenzo approached Valkyra, a prominent and well-meaning pirate, asking her to gather a group of allies to help escort him to Shieldmorn, a settlement located on the north side of Ager-Dies. After some interrogation, Lorenzo hesitated, admitting his limited knowledge of what was in the package or who he was delivering it to. Clearly shaken, he pleaded for assistance, intending to complete the task swiftly to avoid angering his employer. The party set sail on the Blue Arrow, a small passenger boat, and arrived in two days with favorable weather. Upon securing the ship, they were aware that while Shieldmorn is the safest province for its denizens, outsiders are viewed with suspicion to protect the community's integrity. However, the party's reputation from Guildmast, known for assisting other islands, gave them some leverage.
With keen observation, the party notices a group of well-armed soldiers marching with precision from their right. A quick thaumaturgic shout alerts them to the soldiers, asking what of their intentions, and they respond with a "Hail!" These soldiers belong to the Seafarer Shield, one of the nine units that guard the island. The captain, a more prominent figure, efficiently handles their interaction before returning to their duties, ensuring they are aware of the party's presence. Continuing on, the party passes through the bustling McCeilian Market and the nearby residential zones, quickly reaching the Lucky Buckler Inn, Lorenzo's designated rendezvous point. Lorenzo completes his transfer while some party members enjoy a welcome break from their hard rations with a nice meal. They notice another group leaving suspiciously upon their arrival. After finishing up, the party returns to the Blue Arrow to make their way back home.
As the adventurers return, their weapons of warning glow intensely, alerting them to danger. A rough-looking group of bandits approaches, their attack beginning with arrows and reciprocated with bolts of fire. However, they underestimate the party's strength and are swiftly defeated, one by one, the bandits are dispatched, some falling to swords and axes, while others are burned to a crisp by magical flames. One particularly bold mage loses their spellcasting focus and resorts to hurling insults at the adventurers. In the chaos of battle, Lorenzo suffers a venomous spider bite, which doesn’t show any symptoms immediately. After being treated by the cleric for his bite, Lorenzo retches over the side of the boat. Meanwhile, the observant monk notices a disturbance in the water and spots a large octopus leaping out and unleashing a flurry of tentacle attacks. The party quickly dispatches the creature and enjoys it as a satisfying meal.
With the mission complete, Lorenzo grimaces, realizing he cannot deliver the full payment until he informs his employer. The party is directed to a building in the southwest of Guildmast, marked with a metal door. The wall features a slot with a circular dish, seemingly for a token of entry. However, Lorenzo's token doesn't fit, and the gatekeeper informs them that the passcodes have changed due to a transitional period. Lorenzo is an honorary member but is not fully initiated into the criminal group. Returning to where Lorenzo first heard about the group, the guild's hall, the party finds a note revealing a riddle: "A compass is my arrow, but my bow will never fire." The monk correctly deduces that the answer is "a ship." As a reward, the monk receives a different-shaped token, similar to a 50-cent coin. When this token is slid into the slot, it fits perfectly, granting the party entry into the building.
In the underground lair, the party is met with suspicious gazes from the well-armed patrons as they await Lorenzo to finish his business. A fight erupts, with some of the patrons being overly aggressive, throwing daggers and engaging in physical confrontations. The party, however, handles the situation adeptly, swiftly ending the battle with a loud commotion. In a corner of the room, Vespera is seen drinking absently, pretending not to recognize the adventurers she knows. The barkeep sighs tiredly, indicating familiarity with such scenes.
Suddenly, webs shoot out from various directions, and the last remaining ruffian is swiftly dealt with, his shoulders cracking together with a dreadful sound. Lorenzo then meets with the party, giving them the promised gold but holding back more for further discussion. The group is then shunted out, and the door slams shut behind them, concluding the first part of the questline.
Post-Game Summary: • The party made good time with the Blue Arrow. • The encounter with the Seafarer Shield raised suspicions. • They encountered and defeated a large octopus. • Lorenzo was cured of his injury. • The party easily solved the riddle at the guild's hall. • There was an incident where they tampered with and threatened the gatekeeper. • Both combat encounters were cleared easily by the party. • They gained the attention of Roneta. • The party was rewarded with 300 gold and 7 tentacles (material component).
