Yemaja (YEH-mah-jah)

African Deity

Yemaja

Yemaja is the Yoruba orisha of the sea, motherhood, and all waters that nourish life. She is the river that becomes ocean, the womb that births nations. Worshipped in Nigeria and throughout the African diaspora, Yemaja comforts the grieving, protects children, and governs over emotions too deep for words. She is both matron and tide—gentle until stirred.   In diaspora religions like Santería and Candomblé, she became a queenly mother of oceans, blue-robed and regal, who accepts offerings of perfume, mirrors, and white flowers. Sailors invoke her for safe passage. Mothers call to her during childbirth. She does not deny pain—but she softens its weight with love.

Physical Description

General Physical Condition

She appears as a stately woman cloaked in layered blues and silvers, crowned with coral and moonstones. Her skin glistens with salt, her gaze both warm and weeping. Seashells whisper her name wherever waves meet sand.

Mental characteristics

Sexuality

Yemaja loves protectively, embracing all who come with humility and tenderness. Her bonds are emotional and nurturing, but deep as trenches. She craves sincerity and shuns cruelty. Her intimacy feels like being cradled by tide—safe, cleansing, and inevitable.
